Jumping into...

Our Gentlemen Boxers

... ring. As the Hall mobilizes for Mullets Against, several Gentlemen are getting ready to jump into the ring, the boxing ring, for Bengal Bouts. Started by Knute Rockne, the Bengal Bouts is yearly event, where after extensive training. students box, raising funds for the Holy Cross missions in Bangladesh. Every year a number of Gentlemen dedicate themselves to a rigorous training schedule to prepare themselves for the month long competition. Hoping to win their bouts, earning glory and fame for themselves but especially for their Hall and King, four Gentlemen are preparing to enter the ring this year... Daniel Maguire, Aidan Tompkins, Jared Walsh and Josh Williams. Rest assured, as these boxers are focusing on their preparations, their fellow Gentlemen will do their part, cheering and motivating their Gentlemen boxers. On boxing in the Bouts, Aidan Tompkins, Steds sophomore and resident stand up comedian said, "I joined Bengal Bouts because it seemed like something fun to do and a new skill to learn. It’s been really tough but a lot of fun. The tournament is in just over three weeks, and I’m very excited for it. Well, until I get hit."

Good luck to all our Gentlemen Boxers!

Your Sunday picture...

... from Notre Dame. Here are a series of pictures taken after the first substantial snowfall since returning to campus for the new semester. The fresh, white snow makes the blue sky and the gold dome of the Main Building stand out all the more. Unfortunately, they don't capture how cold it is. Maybe it's for the best of our readership! Enjoy, and enjoy your Sunday wherever you may be!

Saturday's squirrel.

I am loving it!

The recent snowfall has been enjoyed by many but none more than our furry friends. The recent five inches of snow that has blanketed campus has given the ND landscaping crew something to contend with, clearing the miles of sidewalks, but for our squirrels, it's something to frolic in and relish. That's certainly what this squirrel was doing in St. Edward's Park. On enjoying the snow, this squirrel non-verbaled, "I love fresh powder."

One night...

Tompkins: He's just that funny

... only! That's right folks! For one night only, Steds sophomore and stand up comedian, Aidan Tompkins, took to the stage at Legend's to serve up his "comedic wears." In the crowd was a group of his fellow Stedsmen. The group had came to support their rising, comedic star by ensuring that all available seats were filled, but in the end, it was they who were supported by the laughs served up by this young farceur. One of the Stedsmen in the group was Vice Presidents, Jack O'Leary. On taking in Tompkins' comedic fare, O'Leary, "We didn't ask Aidan how good he was before we filled the seats with Steds guys. Maybe we should have. But thank God, he was really funny."

Is that edible...

A new flavor at Baskin-Robbins?

… or not? As we continue on in our series, we make a stop at these odd and irregular shaped fruits of this shrub located right outside the LaFortune Student Center. Located on God Quad, Hamamelis Virginiana, or witchhazel, is a native shrub to the area that has bright yellow, yellowish-orange flowers in the fall. These shrubs are slow growing, and being slow growers, they are not popular among gardeners. The seeds of the witchazel are edible, but instead of eating them, you are more likely to use witchhazel in other ways. How? Well, witchhazel has been used in medicines to help relieve swelling, bleeding, itching, minor pain, and discomfort caused by minor skin irritations, e.g. bug bites and hemorrhoids. On witchhazel, Fr. Terry Ehrman asked, "But does it go well with ice cream?"

A man with a...

Johnson: My captain, my captain

... mission and a mullet. Well, soon, Ryan Johnson, Steds sophomore and Mullets Against Malaria Commissioner, will have a mullet and direct Steds hair power in the battle against malaria. But before the our boys head off to the front, I was able to catch up with this brave Georgian, and ask him about the impending showdown with our

St.Ed: For those who are new to Steds, what is Mullets Against Malaria?

Johnson: Mullets Against Malaria is a Steds charity event where we will be getting beautiful mullets on February 9th. We will not remove our mullets until our fundraising goal is achieved. Yes, our mullets allow us to raise money for Nothing But Nets, a great charity fighting against Malaria worldwide by providing mosquito nets to affected areas.

St.Ed: How is Steds using mullets to stop malaria?

Johnson: Everyone knows how beautiful mullets are, and our mullets will be too. They will catch the eyes of others as well as their attention. Our mullets will make them ask themselves, "Why are there so many handsome guys wearing cool mullets from the 80's?" In the end, it will draw them to our side to give, allowing Nothing But Nets to purchase bed nets for children, especially in Africa, to keep malaria-carrying flies from infecting them. Who knew simple bed nets could do so much?

St. Ed: As our commander in the fight, how are you rallying the men to offer their locks to this noble cause?

Johnson: Beyond organizing many of the logistical details of this fight, the Men of St. Edward's Hall have required very little rallying. Spirits are high, and their enthusiasm is electrifying. As we all know, the Gentlemen of St. Edward's Hall won't shy away from a fight, especially when it's against malaria. It's all very edifying.

St. Ed: When you get your mop of hair styled, will it be a mullet, and if so, will it have a name?

Johnson: It will absolutely be a mullet. As of right now, a name has not been decided upon. I feel that it is better to see the finished product before finding a worthy name for it.

St. Ed: Okay, maybe you can’t say, but do we have any secret weapons in this fight?

Johnson: At this time I am not prepared to release any confidential information about potential "secret weapons;" however, I am prepared to say that we have a few things, aces, up our sleeves.

St.Ed: How can others join you and brave boys, maybe not with a mullet, in this fight against malaria?

Johnson: The best way to help us in this fight is by making a donation. Even a small amount can make a huge difference to those in need. Together we can all help bring an end to this disease.

St.Ed: Good luck to you and all of our boys!

Clash of...

Lynch taking a shot...

... the Titans in the Billiards Room. It was a good, old fashion throw down in the Steds Billiards Room that pitted Stedsmen against Stedsmen in a high-stakes pool tournament. Following a single-elimination bracket, a pair of duos went head-to-head in games of 8-ball pool until one stood victorious.

Vying for credit at the Michelin three-starred eatery, Ed's, the gentleman's game of billiards has never been so cutthroat. After nearly three hours of fierce play,  Team "Danimal and Japutinga,”  composed of freshmen Dane Storch and Louis Rauch, emerged the victors after Michael Lynch of Team "Eight Balls”, with Ben Theis, pocketed the 8-ball on an impressive bank shot in the wrong pocket.

Still, special shoutouts go to Will Dwortz and Quentin Fairchild of the Team "Q can, Q will" for coming in second place. Still yet, notable thanks go to Levi Cherek for having the entire rulebook of standard American 8-ball pool seemingly memorized cover to cover and Eoghan Fay for being the line judge in a game with no lines that require judging.

In the end, it was a jovial afternoon of brotherhood and trigonometry that will stand out in the history books for Steds generations to come.

On the win, Rauch and Storch shared, “We had a tough road to the championship, playing some of the toughest competition on the field, but our team chemistry allowed us to take home the title.  This tournament ended like most things with Steds on top.”

It seemed like...

It was an attractive nuisance...

... a good idea. What could go wrong? It was cold, and how could anything survive in such frigid temperatures? So, when a giant bald face hornet nest was found on the north side of campus in December, why not collect it? That's exactly what Frs. Ralph and Terry did. Removing it from a small tree, they placed in a large, black trash bag, saving it for Fr. Terry's biology class. After enjoying a short repast, the two fathers heard a faint buzzing sound coming from the bag. Apparently, the warmth of the inside had reanimated some of the wasps. What do? Thanks to Fr. Ralph's quick thinking, he stuck the nest in his freezer. After the nest was in the deep freeze for several weeks, it was determined, or guessed really, that it was safe enough to take the next step... to cut the nest open. With Fr. Ralph assisting, Fr. Terry, using a bread knife, cut the nest in half. On cutting the next in half, Fr. Ralph said, "Don't try this at home."

Saturday Squirrel.

We see you

We already know that we're being watched by our furry friends. Indeed, we're never out of their watchful gaze. But some times we are reminded that we really are being watched and that was certainly the case when walking by the wooded area of Twyckenham Road on the very east side of campus. Feeling a disturbance, Fr. Ralph turned around to suddenly discover not one but two sets of eyes watching him. On being spotted, one squirrel non-verbaled, "Oh, hi there. Don't mind us."

It's back...

Jekot: An Ed's firestarter

... to go at Ed's. Yes, the door of everyone's favorite eatery is open again. Once again, Ed's is serving up everyone's favorite late night snacks, pizza sticks, paninis, and much more. But none of this could happen if it weren't for a few dedicated and brave Stedsmen, the Culinary Service Representatives, who keep the late night fires lit. It's the Ed's CSRs, like sophomore and inter-hall football champion, Mike Jekot, who serve up the food, smiles, and conversation. It's to these men that every Stedsmen owe a debt of gratitude... and a tip too. On serving up Ed's specialities for his fellow Stedsmen, Jekot said, "What can I say, but I like playing with fire."

Is that edible...

Coming to a tea pot near you?

... or not? We continue on in our series with Syringa reticulata or commonly known as Japanese tree lilac.Japanese tree lilac typically grows as a small tree or large shrub. Its best ornamental feature is its showy, fragrant, creamy white flowers which bloom in upright panicles to 12” long in late spring to early summer. Flowers give way to loose clusters of brown capsules that last into winter. But is it edible? Well, the petals of the flowers can be used in a tea, but other than that, we should stay away. On the Japanese tree lilac, Fr. Terry Ehrman CSC said, "There's not enough tea to make me drink this tea."

What do you...

Stedsmen are all smiles...

... do when you have a three day weekend? Well, if you're from Steds, you go to Sky Zone. Thanks to direction of Jacob Smith, Steds senior and 4th floor RA, a Saturday outing was planned at the local Sky Zone. While there were a number of different activities, the one activity every Stedsmen wanted to partake in was the "ultimate dodgeball." And it's really not that surprising because Steds has a real love for dodgeball, and that love, a passion really, has brought home some inter-hall and intra-mural championships over the years. So, on the Saturday of their three day weekend, forty-four Stedsmen had their fill ultimate dodgeball, where in friendly, non-competitive matches, epic catches... and misses, were had. On the ultimate dodgeball, Will Harmeyer, Steds freshman and resident Ohioan, stated, "There is nothing quite like the rush of beating 11 year olds in dodgeball that will prepare Stedsmen for the exciting semester ahead."

They have...

Designer and deliveryman: Foss

... arrived. Yes, after a supply chain delay, the Steds bow ties and ties have arrived. Originally, scheduled to arrive before Christmas, a problem in logistics pushed their delivery back, and despite a personal pickup of the order by the designer himself, Paddy Foss, it just wasn't enough to have them in time for Christmas and New Year's. Still, the couture design of this neckwear makes the wait worthwhile. So, in the near future, at special event you may be at, don't be surprised to see a classy green and gold bow tie or tie. On the delivery finally arriving, Foss said, "During these dark and gloomy January days, opening this box of bright, silky smooth ties has served a reminder than while we can’t change the weather — and really we shouldn’t dance in the rain— we can, and should remain the best dressed group of men under the permacloud."

And if you ordered one, then it already in the mail!

A shout out...

McClimon (red mask) throwing vibes and hopefully three pointers

... from one Stedsman to another Stedsman. That's exactly what happened when current Stedsman, Drew McClimon, was photoed and then posted to Twitter wearing the jersey of former Stedsman, Men's ND basketball player, and now, Milwaukee Bucks player, Patrick Connaughton. Indeed, it was the proverbial "Warholian" moment of fifteen minutes of fame for young McClimon as he received a shout out the ND and NBA championship star, Connaughton. Perhaps this shoutout will encourage McClimon to play harder in the upcoming inter-hall basketball season. Stay tuned. On receiving a Connaughton shout out, McClimon shared, "Pat is a prime example of what it means to be a champion. Obviously he won a ring with the Bucks last year, but what people underestimate is the fact that he is also a champion of something much more important- the ND housing lottery. This championship mentality is something that the Steds winter and spring sports teams will definitely utilize in the upcoming semester as we strive to bring the glory to Steds."

Saturday Squirrel.

Enjoying the view...

With students back on campus, our Christmas Break guards can finally stand down. Many are grateful for their watching over campus while everyone went their own way for a little rest, relaxation, and of course, Christmas. So, our furry friends are kicking it in low gear and taking it easy, relaxing and recharging. One such squirrel was spotted in a tree in between Gavin Science and Jordan Hall of Science enjoying some winter berries. On enjoying some R&R, this squirrel non-verbaled, "I like it berry much."

They got married!

Mr. & Mrs. Joseph Mathes Jr...

It's official. Joseph “Jay” Mathes ’12 and Maggie Niehaus were married at Basilica of the Sacred Heart in Midtown Atlanta on January 8th. With Fr. Ralph witnessing and surrounded by family, friends, and the Steds family, Jay and Maggie exchanged their vows with much emotion and joy. Suffice it to say, there were tears of joy but also a great amount of smiles. On Maggie marrying into the Steds Family, Ryan Kim ’12 shared, “The 2012 Gentlemen couldn’t be happier for former Steds president, inter-hall football captain, and just plain legend Joseph Albert Mathes Jr. as he married Maggie Niehaus last weekend and welcomed her into our ND family. She is a perfect match for Jay and has been dutifully supporting him and his beloved Irish throughout their relationship despite being a Wake Forest Deacon and hailing from a proud family of Georgia Dawgs. We celebrated among lifelong friends with plenty of love, laughs, and libations well into the night.”

Best wishes and congratulations and best wishes to Maggie and Jay!

Is that edible...

Have a taste

... or not? The American Cranberry bush, Viburnum trillium, is a deciduous shrub that produces small edible, ruby red berries in the fall. The fruits of the American Cranberry bush resemble cranberries, but they are not. The only thing they share is their resemblance, certainly not their taste. The American Cranberry bush are found in the eastern half of the U.S. all the way to the Great Plains. Sweet, tart or tangy? Well, when you are walking about the lakes of Notre Dame, you can take a taste, and let us know what you think. But as always, we would suggest not eating anything from the forest as it is easy to misidentify. On the American Cranberry bush being sweet, tart, or tangy, Fr.  Terry Ehrman, CSC, said, "I don't know. Have a SweetTart instead."

Forgotten...

Hincka in high spirits...

... but not completely forgotten. Yes, a unique story of the strength and stamina of a Stedsman was forgotten, but thankfully, it was not completely forgotten. It's the story of running man, Danny Hincka, who ran not one but two events back to back this past Thanksgiving. First, Danny raced into first place in a trail half marathon. Danny finished in a unique way to say the least, but when taking the podium in his couture Steds jersey, he was all business. But Danny didn't rest on his laurels nor let the gold medal go to his head as the very next day in ran in yet another event. That's right. After running a trail half marathon, Danny ran a 5 K "turkey trot" in his ROTC fatigues all while wearing a 60lbs pack. On her son Danny completing two back to back running events, Kerry Hincka shared, "For King and Hall!"

... with smiles on the podium...

...but no smiles on the second day.

It may not...

A Steds New Year's gathering

... be Christmas Break anymore, but it might feel like it. Bitter cold weather and snow, along with a slow start to classes, makes many feel as if we are still on break. But sadly, we are not. Still, what were our Gentlemen up to during their Christmas Break? Whatever it was, hopefully it was so enjoyable that they didn’t rush back to Steds. Yes, what were they doing during their break from studies, books, tests and papers? For Keegan Grealish and his parents, it was hosting a number of Keegan’s fellow Stedsmen at their home in Virginia for New Year’s to ring in 2022 AND watch the Fiesta Bowl. With some driving from New Jersey, New York, and Virginia and one flying in from Florida, it truly was a Steds gathering. On the gathering and not the football game’s finish, Gerry Grealish stated, “It was great to have so many fine Gentlemen join us to ring in the New Year, and we hope they can come again next year. The festivities ended quickly as the guys all needed to leave right before a the first big snowstorm of 2022 hit us hard. Unfortunately for Keegan this meant he was left to shovel the driveway all by himself.”

Happy new...

Steds in snow

... semester! Despite the frigid weather and the lake effect snow, the Spring Semester is now underway with classes starting bright and early. Now, whether or not the Gentlemen were up bright and early is another story. Still, classes are in session, and the learning has begun. On starting the new semester, Ben Silvio, Steds junior, said, "I’m very excited to be back to see all my friends and enjoy campus during this beautiful time of the year."

I see you...

If the squirrels are watching over campus, then who's watching over the squirrels? Well, this red tail hawk is, but I think it is for another reason. Seen on God and South Quads, this red tail hawk has been seen dive bombing and flying right into trees to, well, get really close to our furry friends. On being spotted perching on a low hanging branch in a tree between God and South Quads, this hawk non-verbal, "Oh, it's so I can see all of you better!"

On assignment...

Lis, DiLella, and Crudele: Keep smiling!

... this Christmas Break. Leaving campus behind, John DiLella and Kyle Crudele, Steds seniors, made their way to see Alec Lis at his home in a location with warmer temps and sunnier skies. Well, that should be the case. Indeed, the skies should be sunny and breezes warm in Southern California, but unfortunately, it's hasn't been the case this winter. But fear not! The Stedsmen are toughing it out in Newport Beach, making the most of their time together. On the Stedsmen sticking together in tough vacation times, Alec's father, David, shared, "The weather may be foul, but the smiles of these Gentlemen are rays of sunshine on a cloudy, Californian day!"
