They had...

One more time: a visit to the field

... their day, and it snowed! Seniors enjoyed not only a decisive victory against B.C. but also another trip to the field. Our Steds seniors, along with the entire student body, paid the field a visit when Clemson was defeated, but this time, following the conclusion of what many are referring to say, the Snow Bowl, only seniors were allowed onto the field. A tradition, yes, but this time, it a bit more than that... an opportunity to be together after seeing their last game as undergraduates and share a moment. And what a moment they had! On the moment, David Hale, Steds senior and RA, said, "I was glad to see so many fans show up in the snow and bitter cold to sit in the stands just to see us seniors get a picture. Truly flattering.”

Another Steds senior who was there, Steve Sayles, added, "What an unforgettable night we had last Saturday. To be able to celebrate a great game with such unique weather was a blessing. I will never forget going down on that field and calling it my own with my fellow Gentlemen. Our last gameday perfectly encapsulated what makes Notre Dame, its football team, and its traditions so special."

I am busy making friends

Our furry friends are taking a break, and so, we can bring you another campus neighbor. Red tail hawks are out and about campus, flying above us, sometimes swooping down. What for? Well, a furry friend. And that's what this red tail hawk was looking for while making an appearance in St. Edward's Park. Taking up on a limb on a crabapple tree, this hawk was not only on the hunt but also within touching distance of those passing through the park. But don't touch! On making a stop at the park, this red tail hawk nonverbaled, "I love the park, and. hunting, er, I mean making friends with its furry friends."

A Stedsman on...

Digenan (back, right) with his fans

... the run. But what's he running away from? Or, rather, in this case, what's he running to? Yes, what is Patrick Digenan '20 running to? The finish line of the New York Marathon, of course. As if he didn't have an enough to do working in L.A., Digenan decided to train, hop on a plane from the west coast, and run a marathon on the east coast. But Digenan wasn't the only one to make the trek to the Big Apple on marathon day. Fellow Stedsmen and girlfriend, Julia, were present to cheer the Steds running man on, and it appears that their cheering and Patrick's training paid off as Digenan finished... and in a respectable time too. But what was Digenan's secret to doing so well? On finishing the marathon in fine style, Digenan shared, “It was good to see friends and family come out to support the event, but what gave me the fortitude to finish the race was on knowing that the kids would win in the end. That, and the open tab at Patty Clarney’s after the race.”

But wanting to share his two cents too, Patrick's younger brother, John, added to the lauding of Patrick. On his older brother's marathon run, John Digenan, Steds sophomore and Vice President, added, "It was a great sight to see Patrick finish the NYC Marathon this weekend for a charitable cause. What was even greater to see, however, was the presence of Steds Alumni to support them. The Steds family really is something to behold."

Look mom...

Onders: Just hanging around the Park, literally

... hammocking in St. Edward's Park! Now, seeing a hammock in the Park isn't something out of the ordinary since at any one time you might see two or three of them. But what makes this hammocking by Steds sophomore Mark Onders so special is that he was doing it only last week... in November! Yes, only last week were the Stedsmen enjoying the Park with games of bocce and badminton, lounging on the green grass and, you guessed it, hanging about in hammocks. And what a time they had! It was worthy of being noted in the University's Archives, and who knows, maybe it will be. On hanging about the Park in a hammock, Onders said, "It’s always summer at Saint Edwards Hall!”

Up early...

 Chasing after classes: Coverstone

... and on a mission. Before most were stirring about the Hall, Tom Coverstone, Steds senior and electrical engineering major, was already up and in the Gregorian Lounge, but why? Needed a coffee fix? Perhaps. Needed to do last minute cramming before a test? Perhaps. But Tom was up for another reason... class registration. Yes, class registration for the Spring Semester has started, and everyone from seniors to freshmen are hoping against hope they will get not only their desired classes but also a three day weekend. But not everyone will get what they want, but like the great philosopher poet, Mick Jagger, said, "they'll get what they need." Indeed, they will. But how did Coverstone fare? Did he get what he wanted? On registering for classes for the last time, Coverstone said, "I didn't get some of my first choices, but I did get my second choices. So, it was a solid silver performance."

Veterans' Day.

From the East Door of the Basilica...

On Veterans' Day there were various events on campus remembering and honoring the service and sacrifices made by those of the Armed Services of our nation. Services were held at the East Door of the Basilica, commonly referred to as the God, Country, Notre Dame Door, and at the War Memorial Fountain of North Quad where an all night vigil was held by the various Notre Dame ROTC branches. Still, there was an event at Steds honoring the veterans of the Hall. Thanks to the research of Eoghan Fay, the names of former residents who died in World War II were collected and memorialized in a plaque that was dedicated and blessed on Veterans' Day. On the plaque, Fay shared, "Remembrance is a duty we all carry, and it is one I am humbled to fulfill. As the Kohima Epitaph reminds us: 'When you go home, tell them of us and say, for your tomorrow, we gave our today.' I am glad we can now always remember our Steds fallen of World War II."

Day in the Park...

Fun in the sun...

... part two! With the first Day in the Park occurring during Founder's Week in late October, a second Day in the Park seemed out of reach because of the changing of seasons. But with temperatures in the mid-seventies in mid November, having a second Day in the Park was a no brainer. Issuing an executive order, President Aidan Tompkins declared that games of bocce, badminton, and corn hole be played as well as hot coco, cookies, and other goodies be served up all in St. Edward's Park... and it was! Amid music, bright sun, and a very warm temperature, the Stedsmen enjoyed a second Day in the Park. 

But amid all the fun, there was something brewing. Slighted during the Shuttlecock Showdown by only playing one game and not the best of three, Shuttlecock One, the team of Frs. Ralph Haag and Kevin Sandberg, was itching to finish their game. And Shuttlecock One got their chance as President Aidan Tompkins and Representative Ryan Connolly agreed to continue the match. 

Shuttlecock One took an early lead, but then suddenly stalled, and finally entered a free fall, eventually falling to Team Government with a score of fifteen to nine. Sadly, Shuttlecock One's best wasn't good enough.

On the win, Tompkins, gracious in his victory, share, "A fiery back and forth, where each competitor’s desire to win trumped their desire to live, created a match that can only be described as a fitting end to a wonderful Day in the Park.”

Smarting from his defeat and looking to place blame on something other than his badminton skills, Fr. Kevin stated, "The winds were like an evil spirit, they were against us from every side, even my collar couldn't ward them off!"

Saturday squirrel.

Who's there?

Something was heard in a nearby tree. Then, something was spotted, but it wasn't clear what was seen and heard in that tree. The mystery continued until a furry friend decided to break cover and make a run for it with his pilfered treasure. Stealing a pumpkin from a fall harvest display, this Californian squirrel was bold and clearly bulking up for the upcoming winter, mild as it might be. On being spotted with a purloined pumpkin, this squirrel shared, "What? I thought the pumpkin was trash. It was just laying there... really."

A Gentlemen...

Pondering in the Greg...

... ponders many things. Recently, thanks to D.A.D., director of academic discernment, Eoghan Fay, the Gentlemen have pondered weightier matters. Held in the newly renovated Gregorian Lounge, a space conducive to studying, discussing, and ponder, not one but two A Gentleman Ponders (AGP) were held. The first pondering was St. Joan of Arc and modern spirituality with Sr. Ann Astell S.S.M., and the following week, it was a pondering of the upcoming mid-term elections with Professor Paul Weithman. As with all college events food was served after the ponderings as well as prize drawings. What were the prizes? Books, of course, so the ponderings could continue! Yes, after each AGP a lucky gentleman could win a signed book by the AGP lecturer. One lucky winner was freshman Nathan Holt who attended Professor Weithman's AGP. On winning, Holt shared, "I think Notre Dame is focusing a great deal on driving discussion of unity in America right now, and it was wonderful to get a more personal talk these efforts in St. Edwards. The conversation was great, especially with someone as knowledgeable as Professor Weithman. The book? It's a good one so far!"

Delivering strikes and spares!

Stedsmen hit the lanes...

What better way to end a Monday than with some bowling. Bowlers of all skill levels took to the local lanes of Strikes and Spares and enjoyed some friendly, but quietly competitive, bowling. Yes, some bowlers gave it the old college go while others brought their “A” game. Some saw their score improve steadily while others plateaued in mediocrity. Some had graceful swings, and others had, well, anything but that. Still yet, some had surprise, well, strikes and spares! 

While bowling was like one big friendly (soccer game without a winner), Steds bowlers were quietly competing against everyone, particularly their friends, and that certainly was the case with Roy and Lemmy. Using their Mario Kart screen names, seniors, Alex Kolodychak and Matt Verdeschi, squared off against each other in the very last lane of the alley. Oh, the game was friendly, but each was playing for the “w.” And when the bowling was all done, ONE pin separated winner from first loser, second place. On winning by one pin, Matt Verdeschi, or Lemmy, shared, “I knew I had to mount a serious comeback. I thought to myself, “who do you think you are? I am! So, I pulled out my inner Lemmy and smashed it up for the win.”

Delivery delayed...

... until next year. While there have been many on time deliveries of sports victories as of late, unfortunately, there have been some delays. One of those delayed deliveries is a Steds RecSports Baseball Championship win. Suffice it to say, the season had it ups and downs. Captained by senior and Mainer, Will Dieterich, the Steds squad first had to scramble to put together a uniform. A challenge? Indeed, since no one is producing a non-Chinese made baseball jersey these days. But necessity is the mother of invention is it not? Yes, it is, and a solution was found by using the Steds basic shirt given to all residents of the Hall at the start of the school year. Next, there were problems on the field with fundamentals, but these problems were not insurmountable, preventing them the boys of summer from making it to the playoffs because they made it there. And while the boys made a brief appearance, it was an appearance nevertheless. On the season, Steds sophomore and rising baseball star, Marshall Smith, stated, "Winning three games this season was a surreal experience. And Tommy Gallagher’s no hitter was definitely the highlight of my baseball career! Next year? Championship bound!"

Another delivery...

Freshmen and sophomores are all smiles

... Steds style. While the ND Football team delivered a win against Clemson, the Steds flag football teams, well one of them, did the same. It was Steds verses Steds on Ricci Fields, where a team of younglings, upstart freshmen really, faced off against an established team of sophomores. While the smart money, if there was any, would have been on the tested and tried sophomores, the youth and irrational exuberance of the freshmen was tempered so that the sophomores had their hands full with the aspiring flag footballers. And as the game unfolded, the sophomores quickly felt like the Clemson Tigers, overwhelmed. Indeed, the freshmen team started strong and never let up, eventually, winning the game. On the game, Jack McMillan, Steds freshman and resident Tennessean, said, “I think dominated is a more fitting word. It reminded me of Alabama vs Akron. The line closed at -50 and we still covered by the third quarter.”

Our winning freshmen team will now face off against ANOTHER Steds sophomore team! Really. You guessed it. More to come!

They delivered...

The game of the season...

... what we all knew they could... a win! Yes, the unranked Irish took down the fourth ranked Clemson Tigers this weekend in what will be remembered as game for the ages. Despite a heavy presence of orange and purple on campus, the Irish and their fans were undeterred, and everyone's fear, that the stadium would be awash in what has to be the ugliest combination of college colors, Clemson colors, never materialized. And after the opening kick off, well, the game went the way of Irish right up until the end. It was a day, or night, to be an Irish fan. Still, as the game was winding down, students lined up to have their chance to storm the field, and it was a sight to behold! On the win, well, I think the pictures say it all! Enjoy!
