Is this edible or...

Thanks, but no thanks

... not? Today, we begin a new series that raises a simple question. Is that edible or not? Campus is surrounded by many plants and trees, some of which have edible fruits and nuts. And so, we give you "Is this edible or not?" that you might be able to safely taste the goodness of nature while avoiding all those things that, well, should be avoided. To start us off, we have the fruit of a Red Bud tree. If you didn't know it was a Red Bud tree, you might think you were looking at Jack's magical beanstalk as the fruits look bear a strong resemblance to beans. Well, they're not, but are they edible? Let's ask Fr. Terry Ehrman, CSC, botanist and theologian. On whether the bean looking fruits of the Red Bud tree are edible, Ehrman said, "They are, but do you really want to eat them? No. You don't nor do you want to eat anything you cannot identify... and that goes for both in nature and at the dining hall."

Game, set...

Aces: Limon and Smith

... and match. Even though St. Edward's may be one of the small sized residence halls, it never has a problem fielding a team for whatever sport RecSports is offering. The RecSports' season started a couple of weeks after the start of school, and now, it's in full swing. Someone who is out there giving it a swing is the Steds intramural tennis team of Smith Limon. Freshmen Marshall Smith and Tucker Limon are out there giving it the old college go, representing Steds, delivering aces, and playing for the win. And even if they don't, they're having fun and looking sharp. But these two are playing for a whole more than just that. On playing intramural tennis for the oldest and most storied residence hall, Smith shared, "I am beyond honored to be able to represent the gentlemen of St Edward’s Hall on the tennis court. This is by far the greatest moment in my young tennis career, something which Wimbledon or the US Open could never compare to," while Limon stated, “Steds tennis represents discipline, determination, and courage on and off the court. I am honored to hold up the Steds standard and battle aggressively within the interhall tennis league.”

They're....

An annual cicada chilling outside of Steds

... here! The cicadas are HERE at Notre Dame. When you least expect it, you'll hear them. Sometimes you EVEN see them flying about. But did you know that there are two types of cicadas? Everyone is talking about one type which has three different and distinct species types... Magicicada septendecimMagicicada cassini, AND Magicicada septendecula. Known commonly as the periodical cicadas as well as the "17 year old locusts," they emerge surprisingly every 17 years. You can always tell these species because they have red eyes. BUT the cicadas here at Notre Dame are NOT the periodical cicadas but rather the Dog Day or annual cicadas, who make an appearance every year. You can always tell a Dog Day cicada by because their eyes are black. On the Dog Day cicadas on campus, Nate McKeon, Steds AR said, "Regardless if they have black or red eyes, they're one ugly looking bug."

Your Sunday picture...

Always a beautiful sight

... from Notre Dame. From the northwest corner of the stadium, here is a view of campus. Of course, prominent in the picture are the Basilica steeple, Mary, and the Main Building, but if you look in between the small, green steeple of St. Liam's and the Main Building, you will see the 4th floor dormers of the oldest and most storied residence hall that continues to write new chapters everyday. Enjoy those stories, and enjoy your Sunday wherever you may be!

Saturday Squirrel.

Hands off!

Friends share, and our furry friends always want us to share with them. Always looking for a hand out, campus squirrels are not afraid to approach and solicit a hand out. That's what friends do, right? But sometimes our friends make it a one way street, forgetting to reciprocate. That's certainly what was happening on South Quad outside of Hayes Healy Hall. Thinking that he was being asked to share, this squirrel quickly let it be known that there was nothing to share. On thinking he was being asked for a handout, this squirrel non-verbaled, "That's mine."

Gainz, gainz, and

Jack Kalicak: On the gainz train

... more gainz. Steds is always a number of steps ahead of other residence halls in everything and that is evident once again. The evidence? The new treadmill in the Steds gym. Thanks to generous benefactions that set everything in motion, Operation Refreshed was initiated. Overseen by Steds assistant rector, Paddy Foss, upgrades to Steds gym equipment were made so that the Steds "gainz train" could chug on. And it is. The new Steds treadmill, has a substantially smaller footprint, freeing up space for gym goers. Still yet, it's helping our Holy Half marathon runners prepare NOW for that big race in the Spring. But there's more to be had. Here's what Foss had to say about the new acquisition.

St.Ed: The treadmill looks really different. Why is that?

Foss: Yes, our treadmill is a self-propelled, curved model.

St.Ed: Is it special?

Foss: It resides in St.Ed’s… so, yes. It's special.

St.Ed: Okay, let me ask it another way. What makes a self-propelled, curved treadmill unique?

Foss: The curved/self propelled nature is much better for joints and burns 30% more calories than motorized.

Learning in...

Let me know when you're done

... and out of the classroom. Learning is occurring everywhere HERE at Notre Dame. And how can it not? After all, the world is one big classroom is it not? Indeed, it is. And so, learning is happening in the classroom and beyond at Notre Dame, and to see this, all one needs to do is walk down a hallway at St. Ed's. If one did, then one would might see the late night learning that was occurring on the first floor late. Recently, Sam Martin and Tin Bui took a crash course in furniture building, constructing a futon. They started with smiles, but would they last until the end? But more importantly, would their futon come to be, becoming that oasis for lazy posteriors? No doubt, it was a learning process for Sam and Tin, reading directions, matching parts, finding the right tools, but in the end, they triumphed. They learned, we did too, that they could do it. Congratulations to our futon builders and scholars! On learning that they could build a futon, Bui stated shared, "It only took half of the first floor to build the 'easy to build' futon."

For King...

An East/West Coast Steds Duo: Di Lella and Raus

... and Hall! There's a lot happening during a football weekend... a lot... but making sure that all is well at Steds falls to a select few who have a true love of Steds. This past weekend Steds RAs, John Di Lella and Peter Raus, rose to the occasion, taking on the mantle of responsibility for King and Hall. Still yet, they decided to coordinate what they wore while on duty in the Hall. Blending their ROTC fatigues for the Navy and Air Force with the t-shirts they got for the national celebration of the GreenDot program here on campus- and thrown some sunglasses in- Di Lella and Raus wreaked serious cool. On the message sent to all by their by their get up, Di Lella and Raus said together, "Respect the Hall!"

More football...

Marching to the right drum: Sam Bradley, Kevin McCarthy, and Mickey Dwyer

... and how could it not be? After all, there were theatrics on AND off the field this past Saturday. Of course, we all know what happened on the field, but what was happening off the field? It all has to do with a drum, the world's largest which just happens to be at Purdue. The Purdue Band wanted to bring this drum to Notre Dame this past Saturday, but there was one problem. The drum wouldn't fit using the stadium's visitor tunnel! But after Notre Dame balked at the idea of using the home team's tunnel, the dream of the drum was dead. Well, it wasn't completely dead as the Purdue Band brought the drum with them but left it outside the stadium. On the Purdue drum on campus, Kevin McCarthy '18 said, "Sam, Mick, and I woke up at the crack of dawn searching for the Purdue drum. We don’t need their drum around here because as Stedsmen we march to the beat of our own drum!"

In other news...

Our "Other Cone," Jack Buckendorf, made it into the stands with his traffic cone!

Tailgate, tailgates, and

A rose, Laurie, between two thorns, Nate and Pete

... more tailgates. With the return of fans this football season, something else that has made a reappearance has been the ND tailgate. Football tailgates can be spotted all about campus, even off campus too, but the greatest concentration is just south of the football stadium. The south side parking lots are transformed by Notre Dame football fans into a sea of cars, grills, tents, and flags. But amid the sea of humanity, there is a place, a tailgate, where everybody knows your name, and they're always glad you came... especially if you're from Steds! That special, stand out tailgate is none other than Laurie and Dave McKeon's tailgate. This very long connected and storied ND family, merge their love of Notre Dame with their Wisconsin roots to deliver a tailgate like none other. It really is the tailgate to end all tailgates! Even Fr. Ralph declared it a special place. But don't take his word for it... listen to Pete McKeon, former Steds AR and Red Room podcast co-host. On his family's tailgate, McKeon shared, “We here at the McKeon family tailgate understand that an army marches on its stomach. We feed any and all in the Fighting Irish army, but of course, Stedsmen get to cut in line. If you find yourself in the Joyce lot for any home games this year, stop between poles 5 and 6 for some good grub and better conversation. Look for the Steds flag flying high!”

Saturday Squirrel.

Getting his greens

Sometimes are furry friends act as they were almost like us, human. Then again, they show their true colors, letting us know that they are not. Walking about South Quad, this squirrel was spotted outside the Law School with a mouth full of green grass. Gorging himself like a cow on the luscious cud of South Quad? Or maybe just trying to get a bit more fiber in his diet? No, this squirrel wasn't eating but actually getting for winter. Yes, he's getting ready for winter by completing some repairs on his tree nest. And now is the time to gather those leaves, grass clippings, and other building materials to keep out those cold winter drafts. On being spotted with a mouth full of grass, this squirrel non-verbaled, "Want to help?"

They're at it...

The Steds Boys of Summer: Steds Baseball 2021

... again! The Steds Hall baseball team has take to the field under the lights to play America's pastime. The season started with a showdown against Morrissey Manor. Unfortunately, the boys in green and gold, under the direction of Coach Now Sweilem, couldn't hod the Manorites. Steds went down fighting, losing seven to one.

Oddly enough, the game went much like trying to outfit the team… a losing endeavor. First, the old jerseys were retired, but no one ordered new ones. Then, when Steds wanted to purchase new jerseys, news was received that Covid made that impossible. Why? Because all jersey manufacturers were out of business! The only good news was that Steds was able to pivot using the Hall basic t-shirt as a temporary uniform! Thank God because we can’t have the kids looking like hoodlums.

On the game, Coach Sweilem said, “It was really great to get out on the field after not being able to play for the past TWO years. I have a great feeling about the team this year!”

Mr. and Mrs. Andrew & Kate Whitney

...they're married! With fellow Stedsmen present, and Fr. Ralph witnessing, Kate Simons ’14 of Pangborn and Andrew Whitney ’14 of Steds were married at Our Lady of Perpetual Help in Glenview, Illinois. It was beautiful day and only made more so by this radiant couple who patiently waited to have their special day. And what a day they had! The happily married couple was feted well into the night and the next morning. It was truly for the young of heart! More football.

Watermelon Moses

Yes, more football! There are many football Game Day traditions, once on hold, that are now back on with the easing of Covid restrictions. Yesterday, we heard about the Steds Float, but there are some that are still off the table, namely residence hall concession stands. But nature abhors a vacuum, and so, new traditions are quickly filling the void. One of new traditions appears to be the addition of produce to the Moses statue. Inaccurately called "First Down Moses," the statue of the giver of the Decalogue is actually called "We're Number One Moses." But regardless of what you call it, Moses had a watermelon on his finger this past Game Day Weekend. How did that happen? Well, he's not telling. Will there be a different piece of produce this coming Game Day Weekend? We'll see! On seeing produce on Moses' finger, Fr. Ralph said, "I don't like watermelon, but I love this ingenuity! I want to see more... and a pineapple too."

A star...

Send in the other Cone: Jake Buckendorf

... is born! If you were at the game this past weekend, then you know that at certain points you could have heard a pin drop. Indeed, it was a real nail bitter of a game. The Marching Band and the Half Time Show did much to relieve the nerves of many, but it could only do so much. What next? Well, send in the students. One student who was at the ready was a Stedsman by the name of Jake Buckendorf. This Steds freshman, and long time ND football fan came to the first game of the season to rally spirits for his quarterback in a most peculiar way. To show his support for the quarterback, Jack Coan, Buckendorf came to the game wearing a traffic cone. Yes, a full sized, legitimate traffic cone! In the end, Buckendorf not only caught the attention of announcers but also the admiration of the crowd, buoying their spirits and keeping them in their seats until the very end. On appearance of this new star in the stands, Buckendorf disclosed, "It's a true honor to be Jack "Cone" who is in full support of our beloved Jack Coan. Through some creative luck, Jack Cone was made and I think that his existence gives our QB1 some much needed support and hope for the future. G'Irish!"

Floating...

Steds always makes...

... is back. After pandemic lockdown and last year's Covid restrictions, the Steds Float has returned to the Hesburgh reflecting pool. Gathering at what many college students would consider the crack of dawn, 8am, Stedsmen of all classes, even some newly graduated ones, returning to kick off the Notre Dame football season with this beloved and cherished Steds tradition of running through the bluest of blue waters for love of Steds, the Marching Band and ND Football. And thanks to Alec Paz, Steds junior, we have pictures to share of this Game Day sight. On participating in his first Float, Connor Cirrotti, Steds freshman and resident New Jerseyan, said, "Running through the reflecting pool has been something I’ve looked forward to since I was placed in St. Edwards Hall in July. I’m convinced it the best Game Day tradition on campus" while fellow freshman and resident Illinoian, John Digenan, said, "The Float on Gameday was something I saw on College Gameday a couple years ago, and ever since then, it has always been something I wanted to do with my Brothers in St. Ed's. Saturday was a dream come true!"

It works

While the weather has taken a turn for the better, so much so that one may want to wear a light jacket in the morning, it's important to remember that it was just the opposite at the start of school. It was unbearable for everyone... even our furry friends. While we could escape to an air conditioned room to beat the heat, unfortunately, our campus squirrels could not. But they had their own special ways of getting rid of excess heat. This furry friend was spotted under a tree on God Quad not stretching for some light yoga but rather stretching out to lose some heat. On beating the heat, this squirrel non-verbaled, "Honestly, I would rather have air conditioning."

A mystery...

The coolest plate in all of New York

... we need to solve! One of the worst things to have is an unsolved mystery. Constantly living in a world of unanswered questions is nothing short of living in a never ending nightmare. What happened? Who was it? Why? And that's what Steds World has on its hands with this picture... an unsolved mystery. Who's license plate is this? We need answers! We need the nightmare to end. Running a...

Faster than a speeding bullet: John DiLella

... marathon never looked so easy! Resident Jersey-ite, ROTC Air Force, and RA, John DiLella, found himself running a marathon one afternoon. Now, it should be known DiLella didn't just decide one morning he running a marathon. No. All throughout the spring and summer, he was training to a run a marathon this fall with fellow ROTC members. Having a bit of setback, where he couldn't push pass twelve miles, DiLella redoubled his efforts, breaking through and taking his training to the next level. But with the marathon suddenly becoming a "virtual marathon" thanks to COVID, DiLella decided to run it away. Seeing no better time than the present, DiLella ran his marathon, finishing in three hours and twenty minutes and change AND taking the first place ranking! The marathon might have been virtual but the effort was not. On his finish, DiLella shared, "It goes to show how far you can push yourself if you set your mind on a goal and work at it."

What's cooking...

The culinary gifted: Alvendia

... at Ed's? The answer is simple... everything a Stedsman would want to eat late at night! It's true. Since the grand opening last week, Ed's has been the place to swing by and satiate that late night hunger brought on by excessive amounts of reading, writing, and studying. Last week we heard from the brains behind this in-Hall operation, the managers, Henry Bergstrom and Jacob Smith, but today, we want to draw attention to those who generously serve behind the Ed's counter. Yes, we want to focus on those generous souls who serve up Ed's goodness; who feed the hungry hoards that descend nightly; who do it all with an elegant finesse and a courteous smile. Today, we meet a very special Stedsmen, Isaiah Michael Alvendia. Clearly, it wasn't enough for this young man to be the Hall's only resident from Guam nor it's senior Mass cantor. No, none of this was enough for Isaiah... he had to be more... he had to be a culinary service representative at Ed's. On his service at Ed's, Alvendia said, "Working at Ed's for the first time was definitely nerve-racking, but the experience was amazing and exhilarating. I loved every minute serving food to the Gentlemen of St. Edward's Hall."

... at the movies. With vaccination rates at ninety-eight percent among students, the Gentlemen were able to attend a private screening of Marvel Studios' newest movie, Shang-Chi and The Legend of the Ten Rings. With the theater all to themselves and movie snacks in hand, the Stedsmen enjoyed this much anticipated movie, feeling as if they were not at the movies but rather in the comfort of their own Flounge. Oh, yes... the movie was well received and given four stars out of four. On the private screening, Louis Rauch, Steds freshmen and resident Illinoian, said, "It was a unique opportunity to watch a new movie while spending time with my fellow Stedsmen.  A great experience only St. Edward’s could offer."

Well, the hall was originally designed to with a four wings, and finally, the fourth wing is going to be delivered. Closed for an entire year and residents living in Zahm, Sorin will actually get larger and house more residents... BUT it always be St. Ed's "little brother." Enough good byes!

Smith and Bergstrom: We say hello!

Enough good byes! How about a hello? Indeed, we have a very big hello to announce. Last night, with great fanfare and excitement, the Stedsmen said hello to an old friend... Ed's! Yes, everyone's favorite hall eatery has opened its doors, serving up late night goodness in the form of paninis, milkshakes, smoothies, pizza sticks, and much more. Yes, all those things that young scholars need to fuel night studying are back again. Thanks to Ed's, straight As are right around the corner! And the Hall has two persons to thank... Henry Bergstrom and Jacob Smith. Seniors, RAs, and past Ed's employees themselves, Bergstrom and Smith are the managers of Ed's overseeing the daily operations and the maintaining of its coveted Michelin stars.

On getting Ed's opened sooner than anticipated, Bergstrom shared, "Reopening Ed’s was an unbelievable experience. The energy in the building was something I haven’t seen in a long time. To be a part of this was simply a blessing. Over the past year and a half, it has felt like something big was missing from my life. After last night, I realized it was just a Herb Brooks (an Ed's panini)" while Smith added, "544 days. 13,056 hours. Over 47,000,000 seconds. That is how long the sacred doors have been closed, how long the storied oven has been devoid of pizza sticks, and how long the men of St. Ed’s have fasted. But, we say no more. Opening Ed’s and now serving our residents is such a privilege that I will relish for many years to come."

Congratulations and thank you to our managers and dedicated Ed's employees!

Another difficult...

Bon voyage... our Confessor!

... goodbye. Last week, a difficult goodbye was said to Lil' Smokey, and sadly, this week, there was yet another goodbye to say. With a heavy heart, the Hall said goodbye to the Confessor, the Hall's entry for the Fisher Regatta. Made for the annual Fisher Hall Regatta on St. Mary's Lake in May, the Confessor was a collaboration of many Stedsmen, coming together, sharing their various skills and knowledge to design, construct, and race a boat worthy of their Hall. While the Confessor may not have won the regatta, it had a respectable showing, but more importantly, it captured the hearts and affections of the Gentlemen. So, when the regatta was over, the Confessor was not abandoned like so many other ships but rather taken home to Steds, spending the summer on the patio. But, unable to find a safe and secure place to anchor in the new school year, it was determined that the Confessor had to be decommissioned, less it fall into enemy hands. In a scene right out of Old Yeller, the Gentlemen, with a sledge hammer, took their ship behind the Hall and scuttled it.

Below is the official statement from the Minister for the Navy, Steds Sophomore and resident Irishman, Eoghan Fay, on the decommissioning of the S.E.S. "Confessor:"

"With profound sadness, I approved Naval General Order No. 6 to retire and scrap the flagship of the fleet, S.E.S. "Confessor.Recent developments on the international stage demonstrated the need for continued adaptability and efficiency in the Steds Defense Forces, which tied with the Ministry's ongoing commitment to a sustainable and responsible expenditure plan, meant that the "Confessor" no longer provided necessary usefulness to the fleet to justify continued upkeep. It would be reckless and selfish of my Ministry to burden the taxpayer with the cost of maintaining an outmoded weapon of competition. While we bid a sad farewell to our distinguished veteran flagship, I can also confirm that I have personally ordered Vice Admiral Vince DiFilippo, Director of the Bureau of Ship Design, to draw up plans for a new and more effective naval flagship, the S.E.S. "Zanzibar." The Ministry's Bureau of Media Relations and Outreach will publicize further details on the "Zanzibar" in due course."
