Let my...

Fairchild: A concerned customer

... people have their Ed's! While school has opened once again with classes in session, another Notre Dame institution has not. Ed's. the hall eatery for St. Ed's, has not reopened. A disaster of sorts for all residents, the closure has everyone in a quandary, asking themselves, "When will Ed's reopen?" Well, no one at Ed's is telling us why because no one was there! On finding Ed's closed, Winston Fairchild, Steds sophomore and Floridian shared, "When is Ed’s going to reopen? The dining hall doesn’t serve spicy chicken nugs and it’s not open at 11 PM!”

Blinded...

The not so blue Super, Blue Moon

... by the light. With clear skies, the Blue Moon, a super moon too, was visible as it rose over campus. This super blue moon will be the closest full moon of the year, just two hundred thousand miles or so away from the Earth. Still yet, this super blue moon will be visible on both Tuesday and Wednesday night. On seeing the super blue moon, Isaiah Alvendia, Steds senior, RA, and resident Guamanian, said, "Although the super moon shined brightly in the sky, I wish all trees didn't block it so much."

The word...

Donoghue: The Long Island Oracle

... in the hallway. Yes, what is the word about this weekend's game against Tennessee State? Yes, what exactly is the scuttlebutt? Lucky for us, a Stedsman, Luke Donoghue, freshman and resident Long Islander, was in the hallway and was more happy to share what he had heard about this weekend’s season home opener.  On the game, Donoghue shared, “The Notre Dame defense delivers another masterclass and Sam Hartman throws for 5 touchdowns as ND steamrolls Tennessee State to the tune of 49-0.”

Taking it all...

Guinnessing & Smiling: Nate, Kristin, Molly and Pete

... in for the comfort of home. While some made the trek to Ireland to see the Irish take on the Midshipmen, some stayed Stateside, opting to take everything in from the comfort of home, or specifically the couch. That was the case for the Brothers McKeon, Pete and Nate McKeon, ND undergrads, ND Law grads, and former Steds ARs. With Nate joined by his fiancĂ©, Kristen, and Pete by his girlfriend, Molly, who are also ND grads, these Irish fans hunkered down on the couch in Chicago to watch the season opener, and you guessed it. It was comfortable with plenty of Irish smiles!

On seeing everything from the couch, Pete shared, "While the Fighting Irish came home to Dublin last weekend, this Irishman stayed home and chose to watch the game surrounded by all the comforts of modern life, in comfort and peace. While some may say this reeks of cowardice, I posit that, much like the riveters of old, we who stayed are equally responsible for the victory as the boys overseas. Regardless, the real takeaway this weekend was that no matter how or where you consume your Irish football, a Notre Dame victory tastes as sweet as a pint of Guinness every time!"

Still, Nate added, "There’s an old Irish Proverb, “Your feet will bring you where your heart is.” Finding his heart was already where it needed to be - on the couch next to his dearest - this Son of Ireland kicked his feet up and poured the Guinness down as the Fighting Irish cruised to victory."

Your Sunday picture...

More golden than ever!

... from Notre Dame. Here is a view of Mary and the Dome from the front door of St. Edward's Hall. With the regilding project on schedule to be completed by mid-October, progress can already be seen as Mary is now complete and some scaffolding is already coming down. Will they be done early? I'll just have to stay tuned! Enjoy the view, and enjoy your Sunday wherever you may be!

Go Irish!

No rain here!

Many a Stedsmen made the trek to the Emerald Isle to see the Fighting Irish of ND take on the Midshipmen of Navy. After much build up over the days leading up to the game, the home game opener for the Irish did not disappoint fans. Still, Aviva Stadium didn't disappoint either as every seat had protection from the occasional passing shower. Really! From the team's performance to the ND Marching Band's Half Time show, it was everything a ND fan would want and more. On the win, Fr. Ralph said, "With double the Irish, it was double the fun and a wee bit more!"

Clean up...

Erdman and Alvendia: Taking care of hot air

... Aisle Chapel. Yes, just before the Weary Traveler's Mass started, there was a mess in the Chapel of St. Edward and St. John needing immediate cleanup. Suffice it to say, Hall Sacristan and Marylander, Will Erdman jumped into action. What was the mess? A gold balloon. Somehow a gold balloon was hovering about the Chapel ceiling. Perhaps it was not a mess, but it was certainly a distraction. Pressing the Hall cantor, Isaiah Alvendia, into action, the two took down the balloon, which surprisingly put up a good fight. On taking down the flying distraction, Erdman said, "We quickly realized that the density of our bodies was greater than the air, and that the density of the helium balloon was less than air. It also didn’t help that we couldn’t jump that high. Luckily, with the help of a chair, we were able to reach the sky and clear the air for prayer."

Disaster strikes...

Not going up or down: the Steds Main Staircase

... again! Like the classic one, two punch in boxing, Steds has been hit by yet another disaster. What now? The ENTIRE main staircase has been closed. The main thoroughfare of Steds, the Main Staircase has been shutdown for the foreseeable future as upgrades are made. What upgrades? A new handle rail has been added and the existing bannister and rail have been raised, preventing falls and such. If losing the limited air conditioning was not bad enough, this inconvenience just adds to the overall hurt.

On the disaster, Will Grannis, Steds junior and resident Virginian, shared, "At the heart of the heart of Notre Dame oldest and most storied residence hall lies the glorious and historic St Edward’s Hall Main Staircase. The pilgrims traveling up and down its haughty heights can reverently slap with all their might the sign that hangs above the first-floor lintel (Play Like a Champion Today), can listen in on the raucous chatter from the Gregorian Lounge as they round the second floor, can walk quickly past the third floor, like passing jail in Monopoly, so as to rejoice at having reached the pinnacle of Fr. Sorin’s creation, the fourth floor of Steds. Over the past few days; however, the staircase has been impassable due to construction. This gross inconvenience serves as a poignant reminder that even the most exquisite of designs can be brought to its knees by innovation, leaving the pilgrims to travel the many corridors of inconvenience which remain."

Disaster!

O'Hara: Not sweating it

Like the high flying Icarus, who was brought low when he lost his wings, the Stedsmen too have taken a tumble. Flying high from an orderly and effortless Move-In Day, amazing Welcome Week under the direction of the talented Ben Somerville and Brendan Avey, not to mention a painless First Day of Classes, all seemed to be coming up roses for the Gentlemen, but then, disaster struck. First, the Sky Lounge lost air conditioning. Next, a call came in that the Gregorian Lounge had become a steaming and sultry swamp. Finally, a walk through the Flounge on the first floor was a like a walk through a blast furnace. Suddenly, everyone's worse nightmare came true... there was absolutely no air conditioning to had in the entire Hall.

While pandemonium did not erupt, the minds of many at Steds immediately began to ask how was the possible? Was this an act of sabotage? Should Homeland be alerted? Minds raced many thoughts  which only made things hotter than they already were. Thankfully, things cooled off, literally and figuratively, as in the evening temps dropped off and the University Maintenance Department promised immediate attention and action in the morning as it required help from the head office in Japan. On having no air condition during the night, Cole O'Hara, Steds freshman and resident Californian, shared, “It gets pretty hot in Steds without AC, but despite the heat it remains the coolest hall on campus.”

They finally...

Let the learning commence!

... started! Classes for the 2023-2024 academic year started today as classes were finally held! While the weather for move-in was hot and humid, it was the same for the first day of classes as it was hot and humid. Still, it was a prefect day for classes as the Stedsmen got a respite from the weather by going to air conditioned classrooms. Nevertheless, spirits are high and the zeal for learning palatable among the Stedsmen, especially for the forty-five newest members of the Steds Family. One of those new members is Joe Robuck. On the first day of classes, Robuck, Steds first floor-er and Marylander, said,  “First day of college classes... I don’t think I have any classes today. Maybe just a biology lab? I’m not even sure they’re meeting today, but I’ll go just in case.”

... from Notre Dame. Here is a picture of Mary and the Main Building amid the regilding project taken from the south side of the Sacred Heart statue. Move in day!

The 2023 Welcome Week Crew

The energy and excitement of the Steds Welcome Week Committee was palatable as the newest Stedsmen arrived and took up residence in their new home. With perfect temps and absolutely no humidity, it was the best Move In Day in eighteen years. Under the direction and tutelage of Ben Somerville and Brendan Avey, with assistants Tom Kelly and Rafa D'arriaga Schmidt Souza, the Welcome Week crew worked efficiently not only unloading the car of baggage but also washing windows in New York City style. And ALL of this was done with a smile and with no requests for a tip!

On  Move In Day experience, Nathan Holt, Steds sophomore, resident Washingtonian and Welcome Week helper, shared, “It was a privilege to welcome the new Gentlemen of St Edwards Hall. Many great new faces were met, moved in, and introduced to the best traditions on campus. It’s always for the kids! The Welcome Weekend Committee executed with the typical St Edwards precision and performance. No Hall does it better! For Hall and King!”

... Co-Captain Kelly is a real task master...

... but Haag and Holt still have fun...

... with their antics on Move In Day.

It's official...

Mr. & Mrs. Mathes with Fr. Ralph...

... they're married! With Fr. Ralph witnessing and the Steds family present, Valerie “Val” Jose ’19 of PE and Howard and Parker Mathes ’19 of Steds were married at St. Francis Xavier University Church in St. Louis, Missouri. It was a beautiful and a very warm, humid day, with thunderstorms always threatening, but nothing could put a damper on this special day nor the radiance of this bride and the beaming pride of the groom. On Val joining the Steds family, Sam Bush ’19, ND football player, Stedsman, and groomsman, shared, “While only now official, Val’s history with Steds actually goes back to before she and Parker even considered marriage. As a veteran of TWO Yacht Dances, it’s with open arms that she’s is now welcomed into our family. As long as the sun sets in the west, Parker and Val will have a place to call their home away from home in St Edwards Hall!”

Best wishes and congratulations to Valerie and Parker!

... had a festive rehearsal dinner and welcome reception...

... with both a dome AND arch...

... every Stedsmen had a smile...

... then an exchange of vows and rings...

... we had the newest couple...

... and Mathes and Steds Family both grew...

... and then it was time for refreshments!

Out...

Cam enjoying creation

… and about. With classes over, Stedsmen are free to be out and about, and so, periodically, we’ll hear where they are and what they’re doing. We recently heard from Patrick Campbell ’23 in wilds of Wyoming, exploring the Bridger Teton National Forest. But today, we hear from Cameron “Cam” Stornetta. This senior from Colorado took a long drive to Wyoming to take in the sights. On his travels to America’s playground, Stornetta shared, “I’m making a visit to Pinedale, Wyoming, but this picture was taken at Lake Yellowstone, about 100 miles north. I’m not sure why someone might want to visit Wyoming, but speaking for myself, I’d say ‘it’s a great place to see the beauty of God’s creation.’”

Saturday's Squirrel.

Calopteryx maculata

This Saturday, our furry friends are on hiatus, and so, we can focus on someone else who might be spotted on campus. Seen flying about the lakes, this ebony jewelwing damselfly put on a show and displayed its elegant black and metallic blue-green coloring, making any passerby stop and take in the sight. On the sight, Fr. Ralph shared, “Did Earl Scheib do a paint job on that damselfly? Wow. What a sight to behold!”

Campbell: Fishing and...

… and about. With classes over, Stedsmen are free to be out and about, and so, periodically, we’ll hear where they are and what they’re doing. We recently heard from Joe Broderick in Martha’s Vineyard, but today, we head out to the Mountain West to hear from a recent graduate, Patrick Campbell ’23. Campbell is in wilds of Wyoming, exploring the Bridger Teton National Forest. Aside from a number of moose sightings, Campbell is fishing, and he has been quite successful. Campbell has caught a number cutthroat trout with his fishing rod, and how could he not as designed AND made the flying reel?! Yes, for reals! Campbell made his own fishing reel, and it’s for real legit. On the fishing with his personal reel, Campbell said, “The fish are spectacular. The views are heavenly. A truly grand place it is… and maybe one day, a great place for a Steds cabin and fishing outfit. America is truly beautiful!”

... and taking in the sights...

... God bless the USA!

Out...

Martha's Vineyard & Vineyard Vines: Broderick and Littlefield

... and about. With classes over, Stedsmen are free to be out and about, and so, periodically, we'll hear where they are and what they're doing. We recently heard from Marshall Smith, a junior from California on pilgrimage in Portugal for World Youth Day and his unplanned running into incoming Steds freshmen, but today, we hear from another Stedsman coming from the other side of the country, Joe Broderick. Recently, Joe, a sophomore from Massachusetts, made his way to Martha's Vineyard, and upon arriving, he was immediately spotted by an incoming Steds freshman, Colin Littlefield. Maybe it was Joe's gentlemanly demeanor or his wearing of the Steds basic t-shirt that gave him away, but whatever it was, the attentive Littlefield didn't miss it! On the chance encounter, Broderick shared, "A few weeks ago I flew from Marshfield, MA to Martha’s Vineyard, where I ran into rising stedsman freshman, Quinn Littlefield at the airport. It was really great to make his acquaintance. For a hall of only one hundred and fifty-five gentlemen, we seem to be everywhere!"

Your Sunday picture...

... from Notre Dame. While the regilding process well underway, and on schedule too, here's a view of the steeple of the Basilica of the Sacred Heart, Mary and the Dome. Taken from the Meurelo Career Center on the 5th floor in the Duncan Student Center, you can see just how large Mary and the Dome actually are as well as how they tower over the tree line of campus. Enjoy, and enjoy your Sunday wherever you may be!
