ND Day...

Help keep the smiles on faces like former Vice President Mackie's...

... started some time ago, but it's now getting real. Once again, we need your help to keep Notre Dame's oldest and most storied residence hall, Steds, at the top. Your help will, simply put, keep Steds being the special place that is as well as keep the smiles on the faces of its residents. On what he's hoping ND Day funds can do for the Hall, Henry Mackie, Steds freshman, former Hall Vice-President, and resident New Yorker, shared, "To ensure our Hall continues to flourish!"

Remember, only YOU can make their hopes a reality!

ND Day...

Help keep the smiles on faces like President Heffernan's...

… is HERE. Once again, the Gentlemen are asking for ANY and ALL support from ANY and ALL persons wherever they may be! If you are unaware of this important day, below is a message being sent to all family and friends of St. Edward's that explains the importance of this day.

It is only because of your generosity on this day that we can host our beloved events as well as start new ones, make renovations and upgrades to the Hall, support our inter-hall sports teams, and much more. In short, the funds raised on THIS DAY makes Steds, well, Steds. NONE of this would be possible without your support for this Notre Dame Day!  So, remember Steds and spread the word!

What is Notre Dame Day?

Notre Dame Day is a day for celebrating all things Notre Dame.  We hope that you tune in, take action, and help the important work of Notre Dame’s OLDEST AND MOST STORIED RESIDENCE HALL, ST. EDWARD’S HALL.

Why is this important?

Your participation will directly impact the life of our Hall the building of life long friendships, memories, and camaraderie that ultimately make the Notre Dame experience. But don't listen to me... hear it from the big man himself, President Michael Heffernan. On why someone should give to Steds, President Heffernan said, "St Edward’s Hall is the oldest dorm on campus. Within its walls there lives 150 young men seeking to get an education, build careers, and prepare themselves for the professional world. This is made possible by the donations given to us on ND Day. So please, donate, and help us accomplish our dreams and have some fun while we’re at it!"

How do I impact the life of St. Edward’s?

Watch the ND Day broadcast at notredameday.nd.edu and at the site, go to "causes" or use the search bar. Next, in the search bar, type in St. Edward’s (or St Ed’s), and give what you can. You can also find us by looking under residence halls too. Ten dollars is the perfect gift. Really. No gift is too much nor any gift too small. To give, click HERE.

Remember ND Day is NOW... and it gets serious on Tuesday, April 21st, and ends on Wednesday, April 22nd, at 11:59PM EST.

And don’t forget, please share this message with others, anyone and everyone can participate for St. Ed’s! To give, click HERE.

What will St. Edward’s Hall do with its Notre Dame Day funds?

As the oldest residence hall on campus, we need your support to help keep our Hall the special place that it is.  We have used past ND Day funds to make improvements to our common spaces, our pool room, the study lounges, gym and so much more.  We have also used funds for a new basketball hoop, a new outdoor hall sign, and new uniforms for our hall sports teams to win and lose in style. Check out the Hall’s blog HERE to see the daily life in St. Ed’s and the impact that this ND Day has here.

But remember, NONE of this would be possible if not for you.  Your participation, and the encouraging of others to do the same, make all of this possible, having an immediate and tremendous impact on the lives, camaraderie, and spirits of those who call this hall their home under the Dome.

All our love and thanks,

St. Edward & The Gentlemen of St. Edward’s Hall

Saturday Squirrel.

Just hanging around

On campus, you never know who you are going to see nor who is watching you! That's right. They, our furry friends, are always present, doing whatever it is that they do, and sometimes, just sometimes, you catch them in one of their favorite pastimes... watching us! That's exactly what happened when Fr. Ralph, who was walking by the great sycamore tree by Corby Hall commonly called the "Hand of God," noticed. Just by chance, Fr. Ralph looked up into the tree, and he saw this squirrel looking down at him. On being spotted, this squirrel non-verbaled, "Hi there."

Enter the...

The man of the hour: Dan Cook...

... gentleman. Daniel Cook '96, of Keenan Hall but adopted by Steds through his three sons Stedsmen, Ben, James and John, came to speak with the soon to be graduates and the newest Alumni, the Steds Seniors, and share his reflections about what Notre Dame means to him today, how it continues to be a part of and shape his life, as well as his life and career experiences. A part of the Gentlemen for Gentlemen series, this Senior Soirée, open only to seniors, didn't disappoint as not only the Steds seniors were able to gather- always a win- but also hear a reflection that truly hit home for those who are about the leave this special place and begin their own careers. On speaking at the Senior Soirée, Cook, Adopted Stedsman and University Architect, shared, "It was truly a great honor to speak to the senior gentleman of Saint Edward’s Hall as they approach this special moment in their lives. Notre Dame has meant so much to me personally that it is a gift to share some of life’s lessons with the next generation of leaders going out into the world to make a difference.”

A brush...

Fr. Nate: Sharing smiles and wisdom with Steds

... with the literati! Steds hosted Fr. Nate Wills, CSC, who among other things, is the chaplain for the Notre Dame football team. Recently, Fr. Nate wrote a book titled Pray Like a Champion: Sacred Stories from the Sidelines of Notre Dame Football, and thanks to a generous benefaction, a copy of his book was made available to all residents of Steds. And if that wasn't enough, Fr. Nate came by the Hall for a book signing!

On the receiving the book and having it signed, Sean Hyer (above in white), Steds junior and resident Floridan, shared, "It was awesome of Father Nate to take some of his time to come out and chat with the guys and sign everyone’s book. I’ve heard it is a great read and am looking forward to reading it soon," while his cousin, Brady Hyer (above in black), Steds sophomore and resident Floridan, added, “It is always a great time seeing Father Nate, and it was a very special opportunity for us to have him sign a copy of his book for all the Steds guys. It will definitely be my next read when I get the chance.”

The Masters...

Gnoming it up

... part three. Again, just when you thought the Masters didn't have more to give, well, it does! One of the lesser known traditions of the Masters is the Masters gnome. Gnomes of various sizes are sold each year, and they have become a collectible for any fan of the Masters. But if you want one, then come to the Masters early as there is a very limited quantity of bespoke gnomes. During his visit to the Masters, Evan Greer, Steds freshman and resident Marylander, was able to put his hands on one of these highly sought after statuaries. On Masters gnomes, Fr. Ralph said, "Gnome? Nah. But a leprechaun... now that's a different story!"

The Masters...

Greer (in green) with his family...

... part two. Just when you thought the Masters were done and over, they're not... well, at least for Steds because we got more to tell! During Easter Break, Evan Greer, Steds freshman and resident Marylander, with his family, made a visit to Augusta! During the practice days, Greer was upfront and center as he saw the contenders honing their skills all in hopes of putting on the coveted Masters green jacket. Greer was able to walk the course, partake of course delicacies like egg and chicken salad sandwiches and Arnold Palmers, AND stop at the pro shop, where much conspicuous consumption occurred. As heard In the Red Room, Greer was even able to purchase a very highly sought after souvenir. What? You'll just have to listen! On going to the Masters, Greer shared, "Going to Augusta was truly a once in a lifetime experience… and so was getting our hands on a gnome!  As for the course, not a blade of grass was out of place. Former pro golfer Mac O’Grady said it best, ‘This is where God hangs out.’"

The Masters...

Where there is food...

... watch! This past Sunday, at the direction of the new Hall President, Michael Heffernan, a Masters golf watch was held at Plaza St. Edward (Steds patio). With weather cooperating, the Stedsmen not only watch a greatDay Three of the Masters but also sampled the grilling of a master griller of burgers and brats, Gabe Yallaly. Regardless of who one was cheering for, it was a hole in one. On the watch, Ronan Sheppard, Steds freshman and resident North Carolinian, shared, "Between the great weather, food, and incredible community, it felt like a slice of Augusta at Steds!”

Happy Easter...

Nothing says "Easter" like a crocus

... Resurrexit sicut dixit... He has risen as he said! Alleluia! Here's a picture of a campus resplendent in glory fitting for Easter. While the Octave of Easter draws to close, we now enter into the season of Easter. Here are some Easter croci spotted in Cedar grove Cemetery. Enjoy, and enjoy your Sunday wherever you may be!

Saturday Squirrel.

Buffleheads (Busephala albeola)

Like the podcast, our squirrels are on hiatus, and as they are, we are able to turn the spotlight on some other campus neighbors, Bufflehead ducks. Bufflehead ducks are small, compact diving ducks native to North America, easily recognized by their large, rounded heads and striking black-and-white plumage in males. Spotted on St. Mary's Lake, this female and male Bufflehead, normally very skittish, allowed a photograph to be taken of them as they took an early morning dip. On being spotted, these ducks non-verbaled, "The water is perfect!"

Spring...

Looking sharp he is: Tommy Kelly

... hoodies have dropped. Inspired by the hoodies given to moms during Mom's Weekend, this hoodie captures the active lifestyles and espirit de corp of the Gentlemen that in end makes for a look that will have any and everyone taking a second look. Without any doubt, this hoodie is a spring must for any Gentleman. Former President Tommy Kelly, Steds senior and resident New Yorker, picked hoodies not only for himself but also his dad. On collecting his bespoke hoodies, President Kelly shared, "It was like Christmas in April!"

Room Picks...

LeFevre: The first winner of the night

... were today, and like all Room Picks Nights, it was filled with anxiety and excitement, disappointment and joy, and of the course, the antics of the Hall Staff. With the posting of lottery list numbers that determined order of room picking and the maps of available rooms in the Hall, the calculations, crafting of plans and contingencies started in earnest, AND it all come to an exciting conclusion last night in the Flounge. Gathering in the Flounge, lottery numbers were called, and then, selections were made in Fr. Ralph's apartment. After a selection was made, RA Kevin Rybinski, like an Irish fishmonger of old, yelled out the room number that had been selected, sometimes eliciting no response or sometimes just the opposite- a great sigh of disappointment. The whole event lasted a total of fifty-five minutes with everyone getting a room in Notre Dame's oldest and most storied hall- the one, the only- St. Edward's Hall!

On being the first to select a room, Isaac LeFevre, Steds senior and resident Ohioan, shared, "It felt powerful. So many rooms to choose from. Ultimately I chose my current room, which has a great view of St. Edward’s statue and was closest to the chapel, which makes me feel closest to the Hall community.”

It may be...

Adams busy Eastering

... Wednesday, but it's still Easter! Yes, that's correct. It's still Easter! Easter is an eight day celebration that starts with Easter Sunday and concludes on the following Sunday. Then, after the Octave, the Easter season starts for the next forty days! So, as the Easter celebration is underway, Teagan Adams, Steds sophomore and Hall sacristan, has been busy getting the chapel ready. Recently, Adams was spotted putting out the chapel's Easter Candle, the Light of Christ, which takes its spot next to the ambo, where the readings are proclaimed. On celebrating Easter, Adams said, quoting the Victimae Paschali Laudes, "The tomb, the Living did enclose; I saw Christ's glory as He rose!"

The day after...

Dyngus responsibly

... Easter is always a day off for students, but for some in South Bend, it's a holiday. Yes, for Poles, who emigrated to the US from a particular area in Poland and who happened to been concentrated in South Bend and the Midwest, it's Dyngus Day. Dyngus Day is celebrated by the sprinkling of holy water signifying the end of Lent as well as yes... eating. During his recent sojourn to his home in Cleveland, Zach Zywiec partook of Dyngus Day festivities. On his participation, Zywiec, Steds junior and resident Pole, shared, "Before heading back from Easter, I couldn't help but celebrate the festivity of all festivities, the party of all parties, Dyngus Day! As the famous polka goes, 'Everyone is Polish on Dyngus Day.' Here was the Polish platter I enjoyed in Parma, the Polish heart of Cleveland (at least in my opinion)."

We experiencing...

We have a problem...

... technical difficulties. After the recent Easter Break, some of us are experiencing technical difficulties of sorts. No, there is no problem with the internets but rather, well, getting back into the swing of things. And these "difficulties" are being experienced by a number of Gentlemen, including St. Ed himself, coming down with some difficulties, and things are just running a bit slower around Notre Dame's oldest and most storied residence hall. Still, stay tuned because we'll get ourselves "operating within normal parameters before you know it.

Holy Saturday...

... is a quiet day on campus. With many gone for the Easter Break, the Hall is a bit of ghost town, but not the Basilica of the Sacred Heart. Having completed Holy Thursday and Good Friday, the Basilica is gearing up for the Holy Saturday Easter Vigil. In the quietness of this day, enjoy this lone daffodil growing in the woods around St. Joseph's Lake... surely another sign from God of the new life that is about to break forth!
