Steds: Sleeping In
Here's a sight that we all know and love, and after a night game, we love it even more. Why? Because after a late night win, it's the best place to sleep in on campus. Yes, you guessed it. It a slow Sunday morning here at Steds. Enjoy the view and your Sunday wherever you may be!

Our furry friends are busy. Oh, they look as if they are living a life of frivolity, but they're not. They're actually busy at work but just making it look like fun. And what work are they busy at doing? Getting ready for winter of course. This squirrel found a treasure that he promptly buried for a later time, when times are lean. But will he remember where he buried it? On being spotted, this squirrel non-verbaled, "Of course, I'll remember, but I'll still ask for a hand out!"

... an evening of networking. Steds sophomores, juniors, and seniors had an opportunity to network with over twenty-five Steds Alumni in the familiar and relaxed environment of the private dining rooms of the Morris Inn. Coming from California to New York, San Diego to Chicago, and even Vegas, and representing various majors from history to aerospace, finance to computer science and everything else in between, the Gentlemen had the opportunity to engage their fellow Stedsmen, asking any and all questions about careers paths, internships, resume review, and advice... all those things that one cannot learn in the classroom nor receive from the Career Center. And all of this was timely because next week is the Fall Career Fair! On participating in the Gentlemen for Gentlemen: Networking with the Family, Dr. Cole Edwards '20, Steds alumnus and now resident Nevadian, said, "It’s always great coming back to campus, but it’s especially great meeting the next generation of Stedsmen and sharing some of things that we’ve learned since graduating. Anything for the kids!"

... we have a problem. Yes, at the corner of Zahm and Keenan Halls, there is a fire hydrant; a fire hydrant that was in need of replacing. To replace this hydrant, which like Zahm Hall had become a safety issue, the water had to be turned off to Keenan, Zahm, AND Steds. Shut off promptly at 9am and despite the diligence of the maintenance workers, the water remained shut off well past Noon. When the water finally did come back on, there was much rejoicing. On the water being off for at least five hours, Owen Murphy, Steds freshman and resident Virginian, stated, "“ came to Notre Dame expecting many challenges, but I never imagined one of them would be finding water in my residence hall. A most serious inconvenience. Luckily, the Hesburgh reflecting pool offered a reprieve for my thirst.”

... experience is loved by everyone but especially when it has to do with Notre Dame football. That is what Emily and Peter Raus '23 were treated to this past weekend when Notre Dame took on the Owls of Rice. Enjoying great weather, the Rauses also enjoyed, thanks to a friend who is the director of recruiting for football, pre-game field passes. Suffice it to say, it was amazing experience. On returning to campus, Steds, and now, the football field on game day, Raus shared, "Emily and I have watched Irish football in many austere locations—Chapel Hill, Los Angeles, Raleigh and Palo Alto—and despite all that, the old saying rings true, 'there’s no where quite like home!'"

... and before all the festivities of the Labor Day holiday weekend, there was the Steds Spike Ball Skirmish. Started last year, the skirmish continued this year, pitting Stedsmen against Stedsmen in a game of spike ball. Playing by old school rules, the Stedsmen battled it out on North Quad with perfect weather and ground conditions. Yes, the grass was perfect, making for fast track conditions. And while many a Stedsman gave it the old college go, only one duo would be crowned winners... and that honor went to the sophomores, Evan Greer and Connor Larson. On winning the Steds Spike Ball Skirmish, Greer, Steds sophomore and resident Marylander, declared, "Winning isn't everything, it's the only thing,” while Larson, Steds sophomore and resident Iowan, said, "Won the tournament. Paid for in blood.”

... so got winded early on...
... continued. Yes, Labor Day continued on, but Stedsmen did not take a break from their labors as classes were in session. But after classes had concluded, the gentlemen DID take a break. Yes, it was time for some putt putt golf. Gentlemen who put their books down and ventured out headed to a putt putt course in Mishawaka for St. Edward's Labor Day Putt Putt Classic. Playing in pairs, Gentlemen of every class level were represented, playing for individual as well as team glory. And regardless if you sank a hole in one (and some sunk many a hole in one), everyone enjoyed themselves, taking a break from their cares and concerns... and their labors too. But in the end, fun had to give way to having a winner, and oddly enough, it all ended with freshman sweeping the honors. On the winning the Labor Day Putt Putt Classic, Tim Tilton, Steds freshman and resident Illinoisan, declared, "We all surprise ourselves sometimes." Indeed, Tilton is right, and in the end, everyone was a surprise winner as all went to Culver's for ice cream treats and more.
