Well, even though astrological spring will occur on March 20th at 5:37am, metrological spring already happened on March 1st. It would appear that the witch hazel bush agrees with metrological spring that spring has sprung. The witch hazel is the first to bloom on campus, and when you see the red flowers, spring is here. Okay, at least the leading edge of spring has arrived, but sustain warm temps are yet to arrive. One person who monitors the proximity of spring by the witch hazel bush is Fr. Terry Ehrman, CSC, theologian and botanist. On the blooming witch hazel, Fr. Ehrman said, "The harbinger of spring seemed to be asleep but wonderfully arrived in regal red splendor to announce a hopeful message of vernal nearness."
