Lanterns, lanterns, and more lanterns
… or not? The goldenraintree, Koelreuteria paniculate, is a the perfect tree for landscaping, and there are several of them about campus. Its yellow tree blossoms look like fruit or banana peppers, but there are not. They are actually paper like lanterns. In China this tree was commonly planted to mark the graves of important officials, and it's often found on temple grounds throughout eastern Asia and Japan. But are they edible? Yes. They can be boiled and eaten. On eating paper lanterns of the goldenraintree, Fr. Ralph shared, “I prefer to look at lanterns, not eat them.”
