Buried in the Holy Cross Cemetery, the community cemetery for the Congregation of Holy Cross, located on the north side of St. Mary's Lake, Fr. Sorin's grave is front and center of all others. Even though Fr. Sorin did not want this, it is only fitting, for without him, none of this would be! Fr. Sorin, we are always in your debt. Requiescat in pace!
... you happen to see on campus. While campus always like pristine, sometimes, just sometimes, you happen to see something out of place or even something completely out of place. That was the case recently as those making their morning commute to DeBart and Nieuwland Hall saw this sight. Was it a broken water main? Did someone hit a fire hydrant with an electric scooter? Well, as it wasn't reported in the Observer nor was it on the nightly news, we'll just never know. Still, it was a sight to see. On seeing this water spout between La Fortune and Crowley Hall, an unnamed Stedsman said, "I kinda like it. It's like we have our own Old Faithful."
... in the laundry room? Yes. What is the word in laundry room about the recent news of the Clemson quarterback, Trevor Lawrence, testing positive for the Covid before next week's big game HERE at Notre Dame? On the news, Michael Lynch, Steds Senator and resident Californian, said, "The word in the laundry room is that Clemson just washed away their chance of a win."
BUT...
...what is the word in the 3rd floor hallway? Yes. What is the word in 3rd floor hallway about the recent news of the Clemson quarterback, Trevor Lawrence, testing positive for the Covid? On the news, Pete McKeon, Steds 3rd floor AR and 3rd year law student, shared, "I believe it was Ben Franklin who said: “There are 4 universal truths: 1) death, 2) taxes, 3) Chick fil a is closed on Sundays, and 4) Trevor Lawrence uses an inordinate amount of conditioner. But it turns out all the conditioner in the world couldn’t protect him from the Covid. Go Irish!”
... while Johnny Welsch, Steds RA and resident Wisconsinite, added, "'Lawrence lost to Irish' and 'Lawrence got the covid' both have 19 letters and at this point I think we can begin to see the stars aligning for our football team."
... have done it without YOU! Thanks to ALL who helped ensure this "make up" ND Day was a success! Regardless of where we finished, we couldn't have done it without you. Yes, without you and your generosity the oldest and most storied residence hall would become, well, just older and less storied. What good is that? But thanks to YOU, the stories will continue on, and as they do, you can read all about them here at the Gentlemen's Monthly. Again, THANK YOU for your support yesterday, and remember ND DAY 2021, with its $1 million challenge pot, will be in April of next year. Mark your calendar, and I am not April fooling! On finishing in the top ten for ND Day 2020, Fr. Ralph shared, "We are humbled. For our small hall to finish as we did is a testament to the love for this special place and its Gentlemen. And when you have that, how can you lose? Now and always, for the kids!"
... too late!!! That's correct! It's NOT too late to help Steds in this "make up" ND Day 2020. While there will be the usual ND Day in the spring of 2021, this ND Day is a make up for the one that was canceled last April because of the Covid. Whether it is a make up or the real thing, ND Day plays a huge role keeping the oldest and most storied residence hall at the Notre Dame on the move. And it's not out of greed that we ask for your help and that of anyone else you know.... rather we do it out of love for the kids. Yes, you guessed it. At Steds, we do for the kids! On there still being time for you to help Steds this make up ND Day, Matt Verdeschi, Steds sophomore, said, "Let's do for the kids!" Indeed... I couldn't have said it any better than that!

... with the Steds Hall President. Peter Nichols, Steds President (above left), took some time out of his busy schedule to answer a few questions about the big day, ND Day 2020. Today is the "make up" ND Day for the one originally scheduled in April but was postponed due to the Covid. REMEMBER there will be another ND Day in spring 2021.
While the format and rules have changed AND, again, another ND Day is planned for the spring of 2021, Steds is not shying away from today. What better way to understand what the Gentlemen are doing for this unique and important day than going right to the top. When we did with his faithful Vice President, Brendan Moriarty (above right), by his side, here is what the President had to share...
St. Ed: Is today, ND Day, a really important day for Steds?
Nichols: ND Day is the most important day of the year for St. Ed's. Like children on Christmas morning, the men of St. Edward's hall stay up all night on ND Day eve anticipating all the great gifts that ND Day funds will bring. A ticket for yacht dance? A deep fryer for "Ed's Eatery"? A new recliner for the lounge? ND Day makes the ideas come to life!
St. Ed: Steds has done very well in past ND Days, why do you think that is the case?
Nichols: Some naysayers may claim St. Ed's is too small... however, that is our strength. The St. Edward's community and network is stronger than any other halls' on campus. We would never be able to succeed in ND Day if not for our family, friends, and residents who put in the extra mile to make this a very special place.
St. Ed: As Hall President, what is administration hoping to achieve on ND Day?
Nichols: The past St. Ed's administrations have set the bar very high for this year's ND Day. This year, I hope St. Ed's sits on top of the residence halls once again, as it is only natural. But, none of this will be possible without your help! VOTE St. Ed's and spread the word!

Yesterday, we heard from the Brothers McKeon, but today, we hear from our resident Hawaiian, Keenan Lofton, who wanted to share this "make up" ND Day hopes, dreams, and aspirations. On what he would like to do with the funds raised on ND Day, Lofton said, "I would love if the funds could go toward a thorough investigation of our residence hall bathrooms (see previous posting HERE). Finding the leak and saving our Stedsmen from another shower shutdown is a top priority!"

Yesterday, we heard from Danny Hincka, but today, we have a pair of Stedsmen, brothers actually, who are the two Steds ARs, and both of the lived in Dillon as undergraduates. But having seen the light, they have placed their affections and allegiance with Steds. On what they would like to do with the funds raised on ND Day, Peter McKeon, Steds AR and 3 yr law student, stated, “I’d like to use our funds to continue holding more covid-friendly hall events that give our residents an opportunity to bond, and provide some semblance of normalcy during this unique academic year. I also wouldn’t say no to some new custom Sted’s masks!”
While is older brother but 2nd yr law student, Nate McKeon, shared, "While Steds already offers so much, every Gentleman knows the largest room in the world is the room for improvement. With the help of ND Day funds this year, we can make improvements to spaces like our kitchen and study rooms and enhance dorm events and outings - an entire fleet of yachts cruising down the Chicago river flying the colors of St. Edward would be quite a sight!”

... Day is fast approaching. To the surprise of many, there is a makeup day for last April's ND Day. ND Day 2020 is next Monday and Tuesday, and while the rules have changed and another ND Day will be held in spring 2021, one thing that has remained the same- the rallying of support for the oldest and most storied residence hall at Notre Dame- Steds. Once again, the Gentlemen are asking for any and all support from any and all persons wherever they may be for this revised and truncated ND Day. If you are unaware of this important day, below is a message being sent to all friends of St. Edward's that explains what all the commotion is about. On ND Day 2020, Peter Nichols, Steds Hall President and mailman, shared, "Due to COVID halting last spring's ND Day, and the fact Steds did not receive a stimulus check, we need your support this upcoming Notre Dame Day. Through your generosity, we are able to host our beloved events as well as start new ones, make renovations and upgrades to the Hall, support our inter-hall sports teams, and much much more. In short, it makes Steds, well, Steds. None of this would be possible without your support for this Notre Dame Day! Remember -- vote Steds and spread the word!

Remember ND Day is on Monday, October 26th, and Tuesday, October 27th, and begins each night at 6:42PM EST, ending at 11:59PM EST.

What will St. Edward’s Hall do with its Notre Dame Day funds?
As the oldest residence hall on campus, we need your votes to help keep our hall the special place that it is. We have used past ND Day funds to make improvements to our common spaces, our pool room, the study lounges, gym and so much more. We have also used funds for a new basketball hoop, video game consoles, a new outdoor hall sign, and new uniforms for our hall sports teams to win in style. ... ponders a great deal of things. That's certainly the case for the Gentlemen of St. Edward's Hall. For them, the pondering of weightier things happens not just in the classroom but also in the hallowed spaces of their beloved residence hall. We might be in a pandemic, but there will be no mental atrophy HERE! Recently, under the direction of David Bender, Steds senior and Hall Fellow, a pondering of all things political was held in the Flounge with David Philpott, Professor of Political Science. Examining American politics from a Catholic perspective, a discussion of how Catholic teaching can inform a Catholic’s conscience in this election was had. And as the discussion unfolded, the nomination of Judge Amy Coney Barrett to the Supreme Court was had too. On the pondering, Joe Herlihy, Steds senior and mechanical engineer student, stated, "Some say this pandemic has reverted us to our childhood days of video games and television. This is not the case here at St. Edward's. Thanks to Bender and organizers of this AGP, we were able to stave off mental deterioration studying the intersection of politics and faith.”

While some people take a car ride north to see the changing foliage in Michigan, all a Notre Dame student needs to do is take a walk around the lakes to their fill of beautiful fallscapes. Some times it's their antics that catch our eye. Some times it's some thing else. That certainly was the case with this squirrel.Walking about, this furry friend appeared. While tending to a green space, our squirrel was caught off guard. Was our friend burying a nut? Who knows because, when spotted, our friend ran off. On being spotted again, our squirrel non-verbaled, “I am just tending to the garden’s verge. Want to help?”
... and taking a break.
... getting cooler, part II. Just when everyone thought it wasn't possible, it happened. Yes, just when everyone thought the Stedsmen couldn't get any cooler than they already are, they do... all thanks to Hall apparel. The Steds fall apparel line, designed by fashion genius Kyle Rubin, arrived just in time as cooler temps came. Now, the Stedsmen can not only stay warm but also look sharp as they go about campus, learn in the classroom, or getting gainz in the gym. Clearly, the fall apparel line reflects the espirit de corps of Hall but at the very same time give a certain relax vibe that only a cool person could throw. On collecting his apparel, Davis Flusche, freshman, said, "Us Stedsmen have fantastic taste.”
... was on, and then, the Covid struck and it was off. But now, it's back on! Yes, that's right... it's back on! So, this Monday, October 26th, and Tuesday, October 27th, there will be a "make up" ND DAY, and suffice it to say, WE NEED YOU to participate to make Steds number one in this University wide contest. Rest assured, more information about this contest will be coming, but for the time being, mark your calendars! On there being a make up ND Day, Fr. Ralph said, "Whether a 'make up day' or not, it's for real, and we'll be playing for keeps. Why? Because it's for the kids!"
... Coach! Yes, that is what many a Stedmen were saying this past Friday. Thanks to the generosity of donors, it truly was T.G.I.F. The Gentlemen enjoyed their favorite Friday dinner feast amid a pandemic- Chick-Fil-A with plenty of sauces. It was the perfect way to end the school week as well as prepare for the weekend and the big game against FSU. But what do you after feasting on Chick-Fil-A and waiting for your first night game? Play your own game of footbal, flag football that isl! Playing with Covid rules, a game of flag football started at Ricci Fields, but what started as a friendly game quickly became a competitive showdown, pitting underclassmen against the upperclassmen.
Whether it was their resting on their laurels or maybe an increased drag coefficient due to all the Chick-Fil-A consumed earlier, the upperclassmen found themselves in the proverbial pickle, eventually losing the game and a fair amount of pride too. On the game, Michale Hendrickson, Steds underclassmen, avid runner, and resident Illinoisan, said,"The game was hard fought, and both teams brought a lot of energy thanks to all the Chick-Fil-A we ate beforehand. However, the underclassmen team had the edge because of our youth and speed, and that is what propelled us to victory.”
Today is the Feast of St. Edward the Confessor, King of England and patron saint of the Founder... Fr. Edward Sorin, CSC. Since its inception, the University has celebrated this day as "Founder's Day." Back in the day, students had the day off from classes, "iced cream" was served, games were played, and St. Edward's residents sent "congratulatory" cards to Fr. Sorin. Matter of fact, one lucky resident was selected to recite a poem, especially penned for this auspicious day, to Fr. Sorin! All of these poems and well wishes can still be seen today at ND Archives at the Hesburgh Memorial Library. On this special day, Fr. Ralph, Rector of St. Edward's Hall, said, “May St. Edward and the Founder smile on us always!”
Also to note...
It was announced today that Christian Kirby ’20 is the 2019-2020 inductee into the Order of Gentlemen, an award given for service to Hall and King.
On learning of his induction, Kirby said, "I tried to leave my mark at Steds, but this news comes as a complete surprise."

... a problem. There's a problem with the Steds 3rd floor showers. Apparently, there is a leak, a leak that's tough to find. To discover where it is, the individual showers on the 3rd floor were shut down. Inconvenient? Without any doubt. After shutting down various individual showers, it was decided to shut down all the showers on the floor. Inconvenient? No doubt whatsoever as everyone on the 3rd floor had to shower on the 2nd or 4th floor. But after shutting everything down, the leak still could not be found. What to do? Let's shut down ALL the 4th floor showers. Inconvenient? Do we even need to ask? Unfortunately, after all of this, the leak still could not be found. What next? Well, we'll take care of it over the Christmas break.
On the recent shower inconveniences, Westin Mulqueen, Steds junior, Texan, and resident 3rd floor Stedsman, shared, "Last week was a tough one. The brave men of the third floor had to disperse to other floors when the showers sprung a leak. In only a towel, a brisk breeze met us on the stairs. The journey to the second floor bathroom was long and cold; however, seeing the new faces on the second floor did not get old."
Still, on seeing the new faces, Michael Mitchell, Steds freshman and 2nd floor resident, said, poetically I might add,
"3rd Floor showers are broke
To the second steds go
A tremendous autumn sight
