On the go...

Weltner goes to Tokyo

...and around the world! One thing that our viewers may have noticed is that Stedsmen are always on the go... here, there and everywhere. It all starts when they study abroad, and it only continues as they as they matriculate and graduate. That's certainly the case for Stedsman Bobby Weltner '14, who, during a recent lull at work, decide to hop a plane to Toyko... because that's what you do when you have a lull at work. On traveling by himself to Japan, Weltner said, "For some people, the thought of traveling alone in an Eastern country is scary, but given the accommodations that the Japanese make for English speakers, I found the experience to be quite manageable and very enjoyable. And fortunately, as a 6'4" Westerner, I felt well prepared to defend myself if I ever turned down the wrong street - only the statues rivaled me in height."

For the kids...

Bill Dufour: the man, the artisan, the friend of St. Ed

When the Gentlemen spend time in St. Edward's Park, they won't be bored. Thanks to Bill Dufour, father of Joe Dufour '12, the Gentlemen will have custom made corn hole sets and jumbo Jinga and Yahtzee games to pass the time. And... it won't have to be during daylight hours since the corn hole sets have built in LED lights for night play! On the recent gift, Tom Roman, Steds AR, said, "Thanks to this personal labor of love, Steds leisure time has truly been taken to a completely new level."

It's official...

Mr. & Mrs. Daniel Rahill leaving the church

...they're married! With Fr. Ralph witnessing and a large Steds contingent present, Juli Hofmockel and Daniel Rahill ’10, former Steds resident, were married at Sacred Heart Church in Coronado, California. It was a beautiful day with plenty of sunshine, and it was only made more so by this radiant couple. On becoming a part of the Steds family, Juli said, “Dream do come true!”

Congratulations Juli and Daniel!

They're back...

Campus Squirrels: Trash driving once again

…and thank God that they are. Summer was a lean time for our campus furry friends. With students gone, it was as if the Heavens had closed and the constant raining down of muffins, bagels, gently eaten fruit, potato chips, Subway sandwich bits and so much more ceased. But when all seemed lost, “they” returned, and suddenly, the rain of food began to fall again. On the return of students, a campus squirrel non-verbaled, “Without them, this Steds trash can stunk!”

They spoke...

New washers AND...

…and somebody listened. It was true. The Steds washers and driers were on their proverbial last wash and dry cycles, and Stedsmen, who had grasped the skill of doing their own laundry, were in serious risk of having to go to Zahm, more likely Cavanaugh, to do their laundry. But when all seemed lost, a moving truck appeared one day, whisking away the old machines and leaving new ones. It all seemed like a miracle, but it wasn’t. Instead, somebody had heard the polite complaints, wishes, and sighs of the Stedsmen. On having new washers and driers, an unnamed Stedsman said, “From one unknown person to another unknown person, ‘Thank you.’”

...driers!

Let the...

Yelich: A man on a mission.

...studying commence. Well, sort of. Even though classes have started and the Steds study lounges are filling up once again, Stedmen have found time to pursue interests that are less than academic. So, before doing the reading for this or that class, let's surf the internets, listen to iTunes, or update Facebook. On wasting time, Cole Yelich, Steds sophomore, said, “Matriculation requires constant procrastination.”  Elaborating on his statement, Yelich went on to say, “The biggest challenge at college is finding enough time to procrastinate.” Before returning to his computer screen, Yelich shared, “I’ve got no time to waste-I need to start procrastinating NOW.”

The wheels of Hall Government...

A night of firsts

...are moving once again. Brandon Ryan, Sted's Hall President, and John Haley and Kurt Roemer, Vice Presidents, held their first hall council meeting, giving introductions as well as charting out their administrations hopes and aspirations. What's on the near horizon? The Battle for the Shadow basketball tourney with Zahm Hall. More on that later. At the end of the meeting, free Taco Bell was given. On having his first Taco Bell taco, Ben Graf, Stedsman from Austria, said, "I liked it. Not very authentic, but I liked it. Can I get seconds?"

Let the matriculation...

A great day to matriculate!

...begin! Today marked the beginning of the new academic year, and Stedsmen were ready. Unfortunately, only now when classes started did the weather change becoming sunny and cool. No worries, Stedsmen will find a way to take advantage of the great weather. On the start of classes, Ben Cote, Steds senior and 4th floor RA said, “Only one more year…and then hopefully 6 more.”  On Cote's response, Fr. Ralph said, “If that’s the case, then I hope we’re going to be calling you doctor.”

Mission Accomplished.

Arnold and Schelble manning the move in carts

Yes, the newest Stedsmen arrived to their new home this morning with threaten clouds and warm temps. Still, all of this could not put a damper on the energy and excitement of the Steds Welcome Week Committee. Under the direction of "Captain" Dan Riley, Steds junior, and "Assistant Captain" Corey Gayheart, the Steds crew was loud, boisterous, AND efficient.

On Move In Day, Riley said, "It was a race against the weather in which our newest additions to Steds emerged victorious… proving once again that Steds houses the best.”Still yet, Gayheart said, "The Steds tradition lives on- Freshman Move-In Day 2016 was once again a huge success. Our first years were the envy of all of passers-by… especially Zahm Hall as they moved in next door."

Last minute...

One morning, it was this...

...tasks are getting done around campus just in time for the arrival students this Friday. Besides cleaning up after "Flood 2016," something else that had to be done was the removal of this oak tree between Corby and Bond Hall. What was the reason? A complication explanation was given, one that quickly was forgotten, but on the tree coming, Fr. Terry Ehrman, C.S.C., said, "Timber."

...and next, it was this.

It's raining...

And more rain is coming!

...cats and dogs! Receiving over eight inches of rain, campus took on a different look with new lakes appearing everywhere. Most notable is the new "mega lake" that encompasses Lakes St. Mary's and Joseph and now the Grotto. So, large is this new lake that Holy Cross Drive has been closed. On the appearance of the new mega lake, an unnamed Stedsmen said, "It all reminds me of the continents and 'Pangeae.' Let's name it 'Lake Jesus.'" Yes, I like that...it has a certain ring to it!

Saturday's International Squirrel.

Brandon, good bye (in a South African accent)

Our furry friends are everywhere, and while on an African safari, Brandon Ryan, Steds President, ran into some distant cousins of our campus squirrels. Even though they are foreign, these squirrels, without doubt, fill with the same amount of energy, sass, and antics as our campus friends. Not trained in small mammal communications, Brandon believed this squirrel was non-verballing, "Brandon, shouldn't you be heading back to school soon?"

There's been a...

But why?

...change. Oddly enough, it wasn't broken, but the University decided to "fix" move in at St. Ed's. Unlike years past where Stedsmen used the D2 parking lot for move in, they will NOW use the D6 lot. REMEMBER THIS because the move-in ushers will be! On the new move-in lot, an unnamed University official said, "Oh, I am sure that some will use the old lot. And if they do, we'll just tell to go to the other lot."

What a great...

Hi neighbor...

...view from Steds. Yes, this is the view offered by some of the individual rooms from St. Edward's Hall. Residents have not only a great view but also a great source of inspiration. It can't get any better than this... so eat your hearts out Sorin! On the great views from at Steds, Fr. Ralph said, "I am not lying when I say, "Every room at St. Ed's is a great room!'"

Your Sunday picture...

Only if it could stay this way...

...from Notre Dame. It's a beautiful Sunday. Here's a view from the Coleman Morse Building with the Holy Family statue, Corby Hall, and the Basilica of the Sacred Heart in the distance.... and the puffy clouds only make the view prettier! Enjoy your Sunday wherever you may be!

Will it or...

Mission Impossible: Ready for students?

...will it not be ready when students arrive? Who knows? Still, the bigger question is will Starbucks, Smash Burger, and other summer improvements be ready when students arrive! Yes, as they have been working on the exterior, they have also been working on the interior of LaFortune. Without doubt, students will notice and enjoy both the aesthetic and gastronomic upgrades. On the construction work at LaFortune, an unnamed rector said, "I looked behind the curtain of Smash Burger, and well, it doesn't look like they will be smashing out burgers any time soon."

From Russia...

An unexpected postcard from Russia...

...yup, you guessed it... with love. Recent grad, Carl Korth '16, made a visit to Moscow, visiting the sites and speaking the language. In addition steering clear of Putin and enjoying some borscht, Korth took in Moscow's Kremlin, or castle, with its towers, churches, particularly St. Basil's. On his visit to Russia, Korth said... well... I think the postcard said it all.

...and one has to laugh.

As goes the sun...

Summer 2016: It just wasn't long enough

...so goes the summer for Notre Dame rectors. Summer is over! Today, all Notre Dame rectors returned to work and began "Rector Training Days." Lasting the entire week, these training days will be immediately followed by "All Hall Staff Training," lasting, yup you guessed it, an entire week. On the starting of his eleventh year of training, Fr. Ralph said, "Summer is truly over... and I regret that I have but one summer to enjoy!"
