... the Founder, especially today, the anniversary of his death, October 31st. Buried in Holy Cross Cemetery, the community cemetery for the Congregation of Holy Cross, located on the north side of St. Mary's Lake, Fr. Sorin's grave is front and center of all others. Even though Fr. Sorin did not want this, it is only fitting, for without him, none of this would be! Fr. Sorin, you never dreamed too small! Requiescat in pace!

Special just got...

Bread NOT from your freezer!

... more special. Ed's is a special place, and the food that Ed's serves up is, you guessed it, special too. And when some said that Ed's and its food couldn't get any more special, it did. How? By homemade bread. Studying aboard in France, Steds senior and North Carolinian, Kyle Bass increased not only his knowledge and fluency in French but also his love of bread. French bread made an impression upon Bass so much so that he now makes his own at home... and without a bread maker. Made from scratch, Bass' bread is the real deal and has a certain je ne sais quoi. And the great news is that Bass' passion for bread can be experienced at Ed's as it is now used in all its paninis. On the homemade sourdough bread made by Bass, Cam Stornetta, Steds senior and Ed's sandwich artist, pictured above, said, "It’s fantastic that we can bring our production so close to home, and continue not only to bring the men of this Hall good food made with quality inputs!"

Toad-riffic 

With students back on campus, our furry friends are taking a much needed break. As they do, another campus neighbor is stepping into the spotlight. At night, over at the crossroads of Mod Quad, this toad was spotted hopping about the sidewalks. Dangerous as motorized scooters and bicycles could easily run him over, this toad was encouraged to move to safety. On the sidewalk, this toad and his silhouette could be easily spotted, but once he hopped off, he was well camouflaged. On being spotted and in danger of being run over, this toad non-verballed, "This is toad-ally scary!"

Taking a break...

... from it all. In the Gentlemen's Billards Room, freshmen, Ryan Hyer, Aidan Machado, and Tyler Tellalian took a break from their labors, playing a friendly game of pool. But was this a friendly game? Still yet, was this a break? You see, at Notre Dame, there is no such thing as a "friendly game," and while this might appear to be a simple break, this trio could actually be practicing for the Steds Billards Tourney coming up in the spring. It's never too early to start practicing! Whatever they were doing, they weren't saying. On playing pool, Tellalian, New Jerseyan, shared, "Solids, stripes, doesn't matter. Practice makes perfect."

What goes up...

... in... or maybe out? Whatever it was, it was a fun time as Steds and next neighbors at swing hall, Breen Phillips (BP), played in the Steds Invitational at Stepan's sand volleyball courts. Organized With coed teams, Steds and BP residents took to the courts just in time to experience the clouds, winds, and much cooler temperatures, just missing out on the unseasonable warm weather. Still, it was a perfect day to play sand volleyball. As the teams fought it out, one team emerged victorious. With their BP partners, Paul Fisher, Alex Kolodychak, Henry Lee, and Andrew Sasso won the day and the glory of the tourney. On the win, Paul Fischer, Arizonan and Steds sophomore, shared, "I was a late addition. When our team found out they needed an extra guy, I answered the call and helped secure a win in the greatest sporting tournament the world has ever seen!"

Just hanging about or parked?

... catching on fire, then they are ending up here. Yes, if campus motorized scooter and bicycles aren't catching on fire (like one did at Mendoza College of Business) then they are being thrown up into the trees, like this one at Main Circle right outside of Alumni Hall. Motorized scooters and bicycles thrown into trees are no different then those driven about campus sidewalks, a complete annoyance. But for some, like Anthony Kafel, Steds senior, mailman, and RA, motorized scooters and bicycles are a way of life. On seeing a motorized scooter in a tree, Kafel said, "There are always issues finding parking for scooters at the bike racks on campus as I rush to get to class. I might have to start parking my scooter there too.

Steds Mass Duo: Alvenida and Robuck

... answered. Plain and simple, Steds was in dire need of a piano player. Not having an in-Hall piano player, Steds was forced to hire a player from another hall. And while all were appreciative of the capable players that helped out, everyone quietly wanted to have a Stedsman behind the Steds Chapel piano. And in August, Steds prayers were answered as  Joe Robuck, freshman and Marylander, entered Steds to start his Notre Dame career. Then, out of the blue, Robuck offered to play the piano, and well, the rest is history. Now, we're half way through the semester, and how has Robuck's playing been? Great question. On Robuck's and his playing, Isaiah Alvendia, Steds senior and Mass cantor, shared, "God has answered the prayers of all Steds mass-goers with the arrival of Joe, a Stedsman pianist! From his debut Mass, Joe has continued to rock the house down, especially during Wade in the Water. We are very lucky to have him."

Daley: Ascending in style...

... back! Yes, our students are back from Fall Break, and hopefully, they are rested, refreshed, and ready to complete the rest of the semester. But while our Gentlemen were on break, things here at Steds did not grind to halt. To see this, one only needs to look at the main staircase. Having been completely removed and raised for safety purpose, the Steds staircase is back, allowing our Gentlemen to ascend and descend all without fear of falling over. While he could have taken the elevator to his third floor room, Max Daley chose not to. Instead, he took the stairs, and how could he not?! On choosing to take the stairs, Daley, freshman and New Orleanian, shared, "These brand new handrails are simply outstanding. Their sheer smoothness and texture combined with their beautiful finish provides for an unmatched stair climbing experience. Truly a splendid addition to the most glorious hall on campus."

On patrol: our furry friends

While our students may be on break, our furry friends are not. It is as if they are watching over everything, and they mean business. Nothing is going to slip by their watchful glaze. And that was the case as Fr. Ralph walked by Hayes Healy Hall. Out of nowhere, this squirrel came barreling down the pine tree to check him out. On campus patrol, this squirrel non-verbaled, "Just checking. Keep it moving."

What are they...

DiLella and Raus: On an adventure...

... up to? Oh, we know well that our students are taking a break from tests, paper writing, and much more, but what are our Steds Alumni up to? Yes, what are they doing these days? Working nine to five? Some Stedsmen, who recently graduated, John DiLella ’22 and Peter Raus ’22 trekked to California area to enjoy each other's company as well as to take in Yosemite National Park. They embarked on a three day, two night, twenty-five mike backpacking trip. Their goal? To climb up the infamous cables of Half Dome. After making a great trek upwards, DiLella and Raus were able to take in the beauty of Yosemite and the Sierra Neveda Mountains, Hall Dome and El Capitan. On making it and taking in the sight of Half Dome, Raus shared, “Compared to the Golden Dome, it’s half as majestic and half as hard to get to the top. This by no means is meant to discredit Yosemite!”

It's official.

The happy couple with Fr. Ralph...

They got married! Michael “Mike” Flynn Jr ’12 and Stephanie Lavayen of USC were married at Our Savior Chapel Church at USC on Game Day of USC vs ND, making an emotionally charged day even more so. While the Irish were battling the Trojans, Stephanie and Mike were exchanging vows, but rest assured, once the Wedding Mass was concluded, it was time for a party AND game watch! Suffice it to say, the victory made this special day even more special, well, maybe for at least one of them. On Stephanie joining the Steds Family, Stedsman and friend, Dan McQuarrie ’12, shared, “As if out of a storybook, love conquers all as Mike and Stephanie, coming from rival fandoms, to form a perfect match deep in the heart of Los Angeles. While Notre Dame may have been victorious on the field, the real winner of the night was Mike - and by extension, the Steds community - who welcomed a brilliant new member to the family in Stephanie. We just hope Stephanie's Italian is better than Mike's as they make their way across Italy for some well-deserved rest and relaxation as newlyweds."

On a Walk About: Gentlemen Fall Breakers

Fall Break. Yes, Fall Break is happening, and the Stedsmen are going near and far in search of a break from their studies. For some Stedsmen, Fall Break is breaking in the Volunteer State, Tennessee, and its Great Smoky Mountains. Immersing themselves in the Appalachian Mountains, a respite has been found the trails and waterfalls. On being recreated and refreshed by the beauty of nature, Steds senior and resident Chicagoan, Mike Jekot, said, "Our band of merry travelers conquered the mountainous hills of Eastern Tennessee, guided by the light of our patron, St.Edward, of course!”

Madan: Bring on the cold weather!

... on other happenings. While the kids are on Fall Break, here are some other happenings that happened during Midterms Week. Right when the weather became more fall like and temperatures dropped precipitously, the Steds fall apparel arrived. It couldn't have been better time, the Steds couture fall apparel line arrived so the Stedsmen could not only stay warm but also represent Steds about campus and beyond. On receiving his fall apparel just in time for the cold weather, Kabir Madan, Steds junior and Singaporean, shared, "In the midst of Midterms and with the sudden onset of cold weather, the arrival of fresh Steds merch has delivered a huge boost to morale. The classic crewneck, in particular, is keeping spirits high and Stedsmen warm!"

It is time...

Break well!

...for a break! Yes, when the leaves are changing color and there's a crispness in the air, you know that it is time for break...Fall Break. Thanks to the tall oak tree in St. Edward's Park and the changing color of its leaves, Stedsmen always know when it is time evacuate from campus. On the start of break, Mace Sexton, Steds AR, 3rd year law student, and the Gentleman holding down the fort for Break, shared, "I am tapped in so you can tap out. Enjoy your break!"

Startled but serene 

Our furry friends are once again on hiatus, and with their absence, our attention turns towards other campus neighbors. Walking between the Sts. Joseph and Mary's Lakes, this doe was spotted late at night. Seeing deer on campus is not a surprise as a group routinely moves between St. Mary's farm fields and Notre Dame's walnut groves. While there were many other deer present, only this doe stayed to be photographed. On being photographed, this doe non-verbaled, "Oh dear, you see me!"

What's the word...

Larson: A numbers man too

... the Steds hallway? Yes, what is the word in the hallway on this Friday, this Friday of Fall Break? Well, to be honest, there weren't many words because there were not many people about in the hallways. They’re all out and about enjoying their break. Well, save one Gentleman, Thomas Larson, Steds junior and resident Southern Californian. On being spotted and asked what the word was, Larson shared, 

“After last week's heartbreaking loss against Louisville, it could be easy for the Trojans to dismiss this Fighting Irish team. However, they'd be sorely mistaken to do so. As a native Southern Californian, whose family raised him right as an Irish fan, I've seen my fair share of SC v ND matchups in the Historic Colosseum and in the great South Bend, and I must say the atmosphere over here... infinitely better. Why is this? One word my friends: fans. With Big Noon Kickoff backing us, the vibes here will be electric and because of the loyal fans and students looking for a great start to fall break I have faith the Irish will prevail. 

Not to mention us Southern Californianers haven't seen weather below 70 degrees in years. Take my word...in YEARS. So when it gets down to a chilling 50 degrees complimented by a nice, cool drizzle, USC best be prepared to whip out some hand warmers and a towel or two or else Caleb Williams ain't got a chance against the cold-blooded Irish defense. 

So what exactly are my thoughts about this week's game? It's a no brainer: IRISH BY A MILLION!”

Midterms are...

O'Neill: experiencing diminishing returns?

... in full swing. That's certainly the case for sophomore and aerospace engineer Jackson O'Neill. Spotted in the third floor study lounge, Jackson was dutifully at his study cubicle, preparing for his exams. But don't let Jackson's smile deceive you. It's not easy! And after being in the study lounge for quite some time, it is all becoming a bit monotonous and repetitious to point where one must ask ask,  "Is young Jackson absorbing the material like he's absorbing the music blaring through his wireless headphones? Hopefully, he is! On his studying, Jackson said, "I  have been studying so much I am getting close to the point where I don't get anymore!"

It's time for...

Looks can be deceiving

... midterms. With Fall Break beginning next week, the week before, this week, is the traditional week for midterms, but in actuality, they have already been happening. And what's even worse is that some will happen AFTER Fall Break. Nothing like having an exam waiting for you when you return to campus after break! As you can imagine, our Gentlemen are engrossed in their studying and preparation for their midterms. Matter of fact, so engrossed are they that one could hear the proverbial pin drop around here. But one thing, one advantage our Stedsmen have in their studying is Ed's. Yes, Ed's, everyone's favorite hall eatery, is serving up late night snacks to fuel late night studying. But on the start of Midterm Week, where is everyone? On having no customers at Ed's, Brendan Avey said, "No customers at Ed's doesn't mean business isn't booming. It's just a reflection of how efficiently I get people in and out of the door with great food."

That thing we...

Good riddance!

... thought would happen, happened. We all saw it happening one day, and well, that day finally came. In a hallway of the Mendoza College of Business, a motorized scooter caught fire as its battery overheated. The fire caused the building to be evacuated with all remaining classes for the day canceled. The clean up from the localized inferno is still on going. While no one was injured in the fire, it was certainly unnerving as well as an inconvenience. On the scooter fire, a University official, speaking on the condition of anonymity, shared, "Get rid of them all! If I am not hit by one, then I'll be severely burned by one. I hope that scooter is now in Hades where it belongs. Pedestrians everywhere, unite!"

They're up...

But what are they really doing?

... to something! Seeing all of these Grubhub Starships congregate in such numbers, should the alarm be raised? What are they doing? Why aren't they out and about campus, delivering food to hungry students? Are they all in one spot because they are about to rise up just like the robots in Terminator?! Indeed, it's just a matter of time. One day, they're serving up our Chick Fil A sandwiches and making our late night runs to the border at Taco Bell, but before you know, the next day, it will be just the reverse. We'll be serving them... whatever it is robots want... and it will be a lot more than just clean, sustainable energy! Again, should this robot gathering sound the alarm at ND? On the gathering, Colin Davidson, Steds sophomore and Grubhub Starship whisperer, shared, "There is nothing to be alarmed about here. Just as we are getting ready to recharge over fall break… the robots are lining up to do the same. Although I think the loss on Saturday scattered their brains a little, and they’re a bit lost themselves just like a lot of us are.”
