Saying goodbye...
Smiling Seniors: Jacob Smith and Mark Giugliano...
... can be fun. Of course, our seniors don't want to think how the end coming quickly, but nevertheless, they need to be feted and honored. And they were at Plaza St. Edward, the Steds patio, on Friday afternoon. Immediately following the hall photo on the south side of the hall, the Gentlemen moved to the north side where, at the Steds basketball court, a food truck was waiting for them. No fighting long lines at the NDH tonight! And don't worry. The guests of honor, our seniors, were given priority in the line. With games of basketball and corn hole, a selection of Fleetwood Mac playing in the background, our seniors were treated to a special Finals Week meal. Still, our seniors were given one of their senior gifts from the Hall, the Steds graduation cords. The Steds cords, golden yellow and green, will be worn at Graduation, distinguishing our Gentlemen who have graduated from Steds, "Gentlemen U." On the Senior Send Off, Keenan Lofton, Steds senior and Hawaiian, shared, "Although the food truck and outdoor games were a joy to experience, the main highlight of my day was the camaraderie shared between our fellow Stedsmen and especially our senior class.”

Fresh off...
Storch, Carroll, and Somerville: May the smiles continue
... a yacht and ready to study! Yes, with the excitement and fun of the Yacht Dance behind them, the Gentlemen are now focusing all of their energies on studying for finals. Finals Week, which starts on Friday and concludes next Thursday, is a week filled intense studying and writing and... little sleep. Sleep? That's for later when everything is done! And on one eve of Finals Week, Steds freshmen, Dane Storch, PJ Carroll, and Ben Somerville, were in high spirits, smiling even, as they exited the Hall with backpacks crammed with books, looking for a quiet space to study. On students studying, Paddy Foss, Steds AR, graduating MBA candidate and one class taker this Spring Semester, said, "What many know is that Steds is the most amusing and social hall on campus… what many don’t know is that we also have the most preeminent scholars at Our Lady’s University — that is being evidenced this week by their hard work and dedication to their studies, not to mention their smiles."

What do you do after...
Anchors aweigh...
... winning ND Day? You go on the Yacht Dance, of course! Oddly enough, the day after ND Day was the last day of classes AND Yacht Dance Day. Talk about the perfect storm, and speaking of storms, thankfully, there were none to speak of this time. It was just smooth sailing for one hundred and fifty Stedsmen and their dates. The yacht shoved off on time, 11:30pm, and the dancing kicked off with the 90's classic, "Mo' Money, Mo' Problems." After sailing up and down the lake, the yacht returned to port at 1:30am with many tired dancers. On the attending the Yacht Dance, an unnamed date of a Stedsman, said, "I loved it, but it was all too short!"

...the Steds family... alumni, moms and dads, brothers and sisters, grand and godparents, friends, Saturday’s squirrels, pets, and all people of good will…THANK YOU! Yes, thank you for your help this ND Day!
It is because of YOU that we are once again the #1 residence hall this ND Day, and if you are counting, this is the EIGHTH year in a row as #1!
Yesterday, you sent a clear message and that message was…FOR THE KIDS! And the kids are over the moon. Indeed, the small hall that many said couldn’t… did, and thanks to you the oldest and most storied residence hall will continue to write new chapters, chapters that only Steds could write.
Still, Fr. Ralph added, “We can never say thank you enough for what you have done and continue to do for this special place, St. Ed’s. You make us blush. You make us proud. But most of all, you make us blessed to call St. Ed’s our home. Thank you for all that was, is, and is yet be!”

This ND Day help keep Somerville and Limon smiling.
... is in two days! Like always, the kids are excited and hoping that it will be a big day for Notre Dame's oldest and most storied residence hall. And thanks to you, a successful ND Day will go a LONG way to making next year an even better year than this year. Two Gentlemen who are hoping for a big ND Day are Tucker Limon and Ben Somerville. On their hopes for ND Day, Limon, freshman and resident Californian, shared, “I hope it brings us all together because when united we never fail to rally for Hall and King. I hope we all can come together to triumph on this ND Day. Emerge victorious? Let’s give it our all and make it so!”
Still, fellow freshman and resident Grand Caymanian, said, “The funds would be put back into both the tradition and brotherhood of the Hall. Going into both events that help bring our community closer and better it, the ND Day funds would go to make an extremely long, and fun, day for Steds. For the kids!”

... is creeping closer, and the energy is palatable. Like kids on Christmas morning, the kids are excited and hoping that it will be a big day for Notre Dame's oldest and most storied residence hall. It's been a long year, so, a successful ND Day will go a LONG way to making next year an even better year. Someone who is hoping for a lot this ND Day is Michael Mitchell. On his hopes for ND Day, Mitchell, Steds sophomore and resident Georgian, said, "For ND Day, many thought a private jet, but what would be even better is a renovated Gregorian Lounge on the second floor!"

Excitement is in the hallways of Steds, and one excited gentleman is Nick Sansone, Steds 4th floor resident and resident Virginian. On what he wants for ND Day, Sansone stated, “For ND Day, receiving support from the Steds moms would be very fulfilling for me, because it would validate my feeling that moms weekend has been one of my favorite weekends over my three years here!”

ND DAY!
What is Notre Dame Day? It’s a day of celebrating Notre Dame’s mission, a day that engages, informs, and inspires people to take action to further the mission of the University. We hope that you tune in, take action, and help the great work of Notre Dame’s OLDEST AND MOST STORIED RESIDENCE HALL- ST.EDWARD’S.
Why is it important that you help us? Because the support received from you on this special day directly helps the Hall as well as helps determine the amount of ND Day funds from the University Challenge Fund to be distributed to the Hall. It’s simple. The more support we receive, the more ND Day Challenge funds we receive. And these funds mean the world to us!
Who can give and support St. Edward’s on ND Day? ANYONE... So encourage ANY and EVERYONE to support St. Edward’s!
How can I give to St. Edward’s? Go to the ND Day website, and look for us under residence halls, or type St. Edward’s in the search bar. Remember to type “Saint” or “St” and the rest should magically appear (St Edward’s Hall). You can also go to the Hall’s web page for further instructions at http://www.steds.com.
What will St. Edward’s Hall do with its funds? Lots of things! Type in “ND Day” in the search box on the Hall’s blog site, and see what we have done with last year’s funds. Saturday Squirrel.
Enjoying the view
We often keep the focus on our furry friends, the Sciurus niger, or fox squirrels. But there are FIVE types of squirrels indigenous to the United States, and two of them overlap at Notre Dame. Fox squirrels can be seen on campus but so can Tamiasciurus hudsonicus- the American red squirrel. Territorial like its bigger cousins, American red squirrels will let you know when you have ventured into their realm with a repeating noise that would be best described as like a shaking rattlesnake tail. Suffice it to say, it gets your attention. But don't run off! It's just a bit of bravado because when you spot them they go immediately quiet. On being spotted in a tree around St. Joseph's Lake, this American red squirrel said, "Oh, you see me?! Never mind."

Doughnuts...
Cirrotti: A glazed future
... and debt. The two go hand in hand, especially at Steds. As part of a program called Up to Us, Connor Cirrotti and others student leaders ran events in three different residence halls called Donuts and the Debt. Aside from the alliteration, Doughnuts and the Debt go hand in hand as the goal of this event was to raise awareness about the importance of sustainable fiscal policy and to help empower students to take action to support a better fiscal future all while enjoying a fresh doughnut. On the event, Cirrotti shared, "In short, important and tasty. Important to hear new perspectives on the debt and fiscal policy of others and tasty...Krispy Kreme always is!"

Derby Day.
Steds Derby Day 2022
A day that only Steds deliver, Derby Day, is a day where the two Steds soccer teams face off against each on the pitch. Steds A verses Steds B, also know as Big Cats, pits Gentleman against Gentleman, Stedsman against Stedsman, in a game that everyone wants to win for their team, or if you're a Big Cat, pride. The game started off with lots of energy, bravado, and theatrics, and both sides came out swinging for the fences. But things quickly got lopsided as Steds A took a three goal lead early on. After that the game quickly devolved into a free for all, making the game into a friendly. On playing in his first Derby, Alec Groves, Stedsman and Steds A team goalkeeper, said, "Nothing strikes fear into a goalkeeper’s heart quite like 7 big cats charging at him on a counter attack. It was a hard fought match between the two teams, and I’m glad I could help Steds A come away with a narrow victory."

Endless vacation...
A Stedsman in Puglia: Shust
... for study abroaders. Oh, they have their rigorous classes, but they also have their field trips and weekends. Whether it's skiing in the Alps, sunning on a beach in Ibiza, or enjoying some herring in Oslo, our study abroaders really do make the most of their time while away from campus. And our very own Gavin Shust, Stedsman and study abroader, is no exception. Traveling with Luke Bell and Peter Ferraro, Shust made a stop to Alberobello, a small Italian town in Puglia, taking in that and many other sights in Italia. Though he travels, Shust misses his Notre Dame home, Steds. Matter of fact, Shust wrote about Steds in an article published in the ND Rome Global Gateway newsletter. What did he say? Well, you'll just have to read the article!
On studying abroad, Shust said, "After three months of being abroad, I have eaten more pasta than ever before in my life, tried all of the local food at every destination, and of course done a little studying along the way (it is called study abroad for a reason). So far, I have visited 8 countries, 2 continents, and more than 20 cities, collecting a souvenir bottle opener at every new place. Although my travels take me to new experiences and new cultures, I still find myself longing for the Golden Dome and my home back in Steds, but luckily St. Peter's Basilica is a worthy substitute while I am in Italy"

A Mom's reflection....

... on the recent Steds Mom's Weekend at Notre Dame. On the weekend, Debbie Lis, native Californian and mother of Stedsman Alec Lis, shared,
"After a two year hiatus, Father Ralph, Kyle Bass, the Commissioner for the weekend, and the Stedsmen exceeded all expectations for Mom’s Weekend 2022. It all started with a beautiful reception at the Morris Inn where we saw old friends and made new ones- all while enjoying delicious food and beverages. As we left, we were given a wonderful bag with personalized t-shirts and etched Sted’s wine glasses. It was just like the Oscars gift bags!
But there was more! Saturday started with free time to spend with our sons, and then, it was to the “event of the season” - a celebration dinner of us- Steds MOMS! With a wonderful quartet, that including our very own James Longhurst, and a magic show by a student, Elliott, that really rivaled any show inLas Vegas, we were all entertained. Oh, yes... the food, shrimp cocktail, prime rib, chicken, and deserts were excellent. And not to be forgotten, a professional photographer was there to document the evening’s festivities. With the Dome and Basilica is the background, it was simply magical.
We concluded the weekend with our own private mass in the Steds chapel. With a great piano player, Peter, our sons sang and there was not a dry eye anywhere. What a way to wrap up a most amazing, memorable weekend. Our boys were so happy as we were!
To everyone who made this happen... we moms say, 'THANK YOU!'"

Exit Moms...

...from Mom’s Weekend 2022. All good things must come to an end, and so too, our beloved Mom’s Weekend. But still, what fun we had! Thanks to Kyle Bass, the Commissioner for this special weekend, for his energy and dedication to make this weekend a reality as well as a thank you to all who helped in some shape and form. Many hands make light work!
A special surprise was an appearance by Frank Soler '14, the Stedsman who convened the first Mom’s Weekend in the spring of 2013. Speaking at Friday’s night welcoming soiree, Soler shared his thoughts on the weekend and life at Steds and beyond, a most moving reflection indeed.
On the weekend, Kyle Bass shared, “It was a pleasure to planning and welcome my mom and the rest of the St. Edward’s mothers for Mom’s Weekend 2022. The Welcome Reception went off without a hitch, as we were finally able to welcome Steds moms from near and far after a long hiatus, and I had the pleasure of welcoming former Hall President and Mother’s Weekend founder Frank Soler to join us for the festivities. And as for Saturday’s Celebration Dinner, well, you just had to be there.”
On the weekend, Fr. Ralph said, "Without doubt, we continue to follow in the wake of giants like Soler, but thanks to Stedsmen like Bass, we continue to make a splash of our own every now and then…we have to…because STEDS LOVES THEIR MOMS!"
