On vacation...

McKenna: Crowned

... but occasionally studying. That's what Greg McKenna, Steds Junior, is doing while studying abroad in Toledo, Spain. Leaving campus in late August, McKenna has been studying in Toledo for the semester, and while he has classes- some classes- he has been able to take advantage of traveling about in Spain. One of those travels took him to the ancient fortress complex of the Alhambra in Granada. Originally constructed by the Moors, the Alhambra changed hands, ultimately become the royal palace of King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella following the Reconquista in 1492. It's also where Christopher Columbus stopped by before being sent off the Americas by the monarchs. Despite some Renaissance additions, the palace has maintained its Moorish architectural style. When visiting, McKenna saw something that reminded him of his home, Steds. On his seeing a crown above a doorway at Alhambra, McKenna said, "Maybe not exactly the crown of St. Edward, but I think it could still work."

The impossible...

Always in style

... has become possible. Many thought it was impossible to make St. Ed's more classy, but one Stedsman took on the challenge. Thinking that the Hall needed to show a more refined and genteel side, Paddy Foss, Steds AR and resident Virginian, thought this could be secured through the bow tie. Yes, this simple looking, yet complex tying neckwear, the bowtie, brings to any function a touch of class. Borrowing on the couture design of John Wetzel, this Steds bowtie is a must for any gentleman. This woven silk bowtie, with stitched Steds crown and 1882, projects gentility, making the wearer more dapper than those without. But there's more! There are also Steds ties too! Bowties and ties... what more could one ask for?

On bringing back Steds bowties and ties, Paddy Foss declared, "The return of the bowtie brings with it a visible reminder that Stedsmen are indeed cut from a different cloth. While their bowties may be cut from American-made, woven silk, our gentlemen are more — they are cut from a cloth of comprehensive sophistication, and their attire merely serves as an example of this. I am glad to have played a small part in returning st Edward’s Hall to its perch as best dressed Hall on campus."

Your Sunday picture...

A beautiful close to the day

... from Notre Dame. Unsurprisingly, it has been very cloudy. So cloudy has it been that one could think that the Notre Dame "perma cloud" has arrived early this year. Still, there have been days when the sun breaks through to provide a bit of much needed and appreciated shine and warmth. But when it happens at sunset, it makes for a beautiful sunset. Here is one of those sunsets as seen in the wooded area just north of the lakes. Enjoy, and enjoy your Sunday wherever you may be!

Saturday squirrel.

Search for lunch...

While we all take a break during this Thanksgiving holiday, our furry friends are not. With winter right around the corner, they are working double time to make sure they have what they need to get through lean months. Still, this hard working squirrel took a break from his labors after finding a treasure under a beech tree on God Quad. On being spotted taking a break, this squirrel non-verbaled, "Taking ten. Tootles."

Is that edible...

Hobby Lobby material

or not? While it’s the day after Thanksgiving, we still may be hungry. If we came across these red berries on campus, should we eat them? Winterberry, Ilex vertiillata, is a native shrub to the area, and while its berries are a food source for some wildlife, they are poisonous to humans. So  if you are hungry and you see these berries, pass on eating them. On the winterberries, Fr. Ralph said, "I see these berries and want to eat them. They look like Christmas... so they must taste Christmas too. Sadly, these berries aren't for eating, but could we use them in making a Christmas wreath. I think so."

Thank you...

Thanks for everything!

... on this Thanksgiving Day! The Gentlemen are thankful for all the laughs, memorable and fun times, and Yacht Dances that have come from this special place, St. Edward's Hall. Indeed, we have much to be thankful for on this day that we give thanks. THANK YOU to all of you who help make St. Edward’s carry on the traditions, laughs, friendships, making it the special place that is. God's blessing upon all of you this Thanksgiving Day.

Disney World...

Stedsmen bowling...

... is where winners go. But, when Disney World is not in the cards, where do winners? That was the question facing Steds this past week. Where do you go after your teams won TWO RecSports Championships? Simple. If not Disney World, then it's to Strikes and Spares! At the direction of the Hall President, Michael Lynch, all Stedsmen were invited to participate in a night of pizza and bowling at the local lanes. On ten lanes, Stedsmen of every skill level gave it the old college go, racking up double gutter balls, spares, and strikes. Regardless of scores, the Gentlemen enjoyed the evening of celebratory camaraderie.  On the evening, President Lynch said, "There's nothing like a game of tenpins."

WE WON AGAIN!

A Steds united, seniors and freshmen, together...

If winning the tackle football championship wasn't enough, then you're in luck because there was more. Six hours before the decisive win against Siegfried Stanford, Steds had another championship game on the line, the RecSports Inter-Hall Flag Football Championship. In an all Steds game, it was brother against brother as Steds freshmen were pitted against Steds seniors for a second time. Brother against brother, freshman against senior, Steds versus Bmo, it all unfolded on the ND football stadium. The game saw the underdog seniors take an early lead over the freshmen, a lead that they never gave up. Chippy at times, the freshmen failed to get a consistent and sustained momentum, and sadly, they went down against the seniors by a score of 18 to 6. Still, it was a banner day for Steds, seeing our seniors have their day and looking forward to the future flag football careers of our freshmen.

On the win, Steds seniors,

Kyle Rubin, Hall Apparel Commissioner, shared, "It was a great day for the underdog yesterday, as the Steds seniors really proved that defense and grit win championships. It was an incredible experience to play in Notre Dame stadium, and made even better by winning a shirt,”

Mike Giugliano, former Hall Vice President, said, "It was an exciting rematch between two teams with a rivalry of the likes never before seen in B-league flag football. Fortunately, our team (St. Ed’s BMO) came out on top. All the blood, sweat and tears paid off, and we are happy with the outcome,"

Brendan Moriarty, former Hall Vice President and team name sake, added, “Going into the game, we knew we would have a tough test against a deep freshman team, but in the end, experience payed off. Gutsy performances by Joe Sweilem and Henry Bergstrom really paved the way to our decisive win. True grit was on display, as CJ payed the ultimate price with a pulled hamstring late in the second quarter. For many of us, this might have been our last chance to win an inter-hall championship. It’s nice to go off into the sunset with a win like that.”

Peter Nichols, former Hall President, added, "It was the weekend of the alpha and the omega — the beginning and the end. Of course the senior year tradition is to go on the field after the game to get one last memory at ND stadium. Yet, it was a strategic moment of mental preparation for our huge performance at the stadium Sunday. Sure, we may have been at the end of our peak athletic careers, but no team whether steds brothers nor the Alabama Crimson Tide were outlasting us during our final moment in the stadium. All I can say — there was a magic in the air in the house Rockne built.  Dare I now call it, the house that MVP Joe Sweilem rebuilt. And now for some icy hot and Advil for the next few days..."

On the loss, Steds freshmen,

Rhett, Bianchi said, "Every kid who’s ever put on a helmet for Pop Warner or thrown a football out in the back yard knows: playing where the greats like Montana, Bettis, and Hornung began their storied careers is merely a fantasy. While the outcome wasn’t what our team had envisioned, I truly believe there is absolutely no greater experience than walking out of the tunnel and sensing the aura of the timeless tradition that flows from every brick in Notre Dame stadium. And to do it when you’re only a freshman, well you might as well pack up now, because I don’t know how it could possibly get much better than that."

John Gallagher, team coach, said, “We were pretty disappointed with our performance, and it’s definitely a tough pill to swallow after such an incredible year. The journey’s not over though - we’ll be back in that stadium soon enough, I can guarantee you that. The good news is that I don’t expect to lose any players to the draft or transfer portal this offseason, so we’ll have an experienced group out there next year."

WE WON!

We are the champions!

The combined halls of Stanford and Siegfried were no match against the football power of St. Edward's and Dunne Halls. Playing for the coveted RecSports Championship in the Notre Dame Stadium, St. Edward's Dunne handed their opponent a stinging and lasting defeat yesterday after a decisive win that saw St. Edward's Dunne take an early lead. With a slight stall in the second quarter, our boys found their footing once again, hitting the accelerator and not easing up until the game was over. Favored to win, St. Edward's Dunne delivered, taking down their opponent with a score of 20 to 7. Suffice it to say, the cheering crowd was elated, and there was much rejoicing.

On the win, Mike Jekot, sophomore and member of both the defensive and offensive line said, “We were not denied! Despite hostile crowds, referees, and weather, the men of St. Edward’s Hall were able to succeed and secure the victory we all wanted!” while Jack Schichtel, junior and running back, shared, "An absolutely phenomenal performance and team effort all around. We’ve had a taste of glory, and we want more. The off season training will be critical, but we’ll be ready to run it back next year for King and Hall!"

Your Sunday picture...

No, it's just SDH

... from Notre Dame. Here's is a view of South Dining Hall with a nearly full moon. The bright light from the moon illuminates the roof of the regal looking South Dining Hall, making it all look like Hogwarts from the movies series Harry Potter. South Dinning Hall, the scene of the Founder's Week Dance, will soon host the Thanksgiving Day dinner for all those staying on campus for the holiday. Saturday squirrel.

And?

We're never alone. Our furry friends are always here with us at Notre Dame. This squirrel was spotted in the walnut grove on the north side of campus. Enjoying a walnut, this squirrel paused and stared at the camera taking his picture. On seeing a camera pointed his way, this squirrel non-verbaled, "It's a walnut. What did you think it was?"

Pack your bags...

Thumbs up: Quarterback Ryan Casey...

... again! Yes, pack your bags again because Steds is headed to the Notre Dame Stadium for the second time! Yesterday, we heard about the Steds football team going to Stadium, but today, we hear from our flag football team, well, one of them. In truth, we have not one but TWO flag football teams going to the Notre Dame Stadium. The impossible has become possible, and now, two Steds flag football teams are facing off against each other. Yes, it's brother against brother on the field, and each side will be playing for keeps. Team one from Steds is composed tested and tried seniors while team two is composed of upstart freshmen, looking to make a name for themselves. Who will win? Well, you'll have to stay tuned. On going to RecSports flag football championship game, John Gallagher, freshmen and team coach, said, "“This is everything you ever dream about growing up - playing football in Notre Dame Stadium (just without the millions of dollar nfl contracts on the line). Nonetheless, we’re excited for the chance to win a championship on Sunday!”

Good luck to our players. Bring home that trophy!

Pack your bags...

Steds at Ricci Fields...

... because we're moving on up, up to the stadium! It's true. The Steds Football team is going the RcSports inter-hall football championship game played at the ND Football Stadium! How long as it been since we last made an appearance? Too long for sure, but without any doubt, the Stedsmen will show up en masse this Sunday. And of course, what's a football game without a tailgate? That's right. Steds is organizing a hall tailgate before the 6pm kickoff. It's amazing, even difficult to grasp, that the day after the Notre Dame Football team plays and defeat GT on Saturday, the Steds Football team will take to the very same field and do the very same thing, vanquish their opponent. I don't know about a lot of things, but the smart money is on Steds this Sunday! And if you cannot be here on Sunday, the game will be live-streamed as well as photographed by a University photographer. Yes, only the best for our team. For more information, look on the blog. On playing in the championship game, Mike Jekot, resident Chicagoan, sophomore, and member of the offensive and defensive line, declared, "It's really kind of a dream come true. Always grew up watching the Irish play there on Saturdays, and now I get that chance as well," while fellow player, Jack Schichtel, Grand Rapidian, junior and running back, added, "I saw the weather for Sunday, 100% chance of winning."

Good luck to our players. Bring home that trophy!

Fall is...

Better Pile One or...

... falling. It's still falling here at Notre Dame. Fall colors appeared late, and many trees still have their leaves. This situation was particularly dangerous when it snowed this past Sunday night. The heavy, wet snow fall collected on the remaining leaves, putting added weight on branches and bringing some of them down. Thankfully, the tree damage was minimal. But with the snow now melted, the fallen leaves can be seen again as well as raked up. Walking on God Quad, students found not one but TWO humongous piles of leaves. On seeing these two piles of leaves, Peter Raus, Steds RA and Californian, said, "I didn't, but I was tempted to take a plunge. Not once, but twice!"

Long night...

Going long: Hauling next week...

... could mean only one thing... a long haul. And that was theme of the Steds Founder's Week Dance in the semi-historic Oak Room of South Dining. Long haul truckers with destinations from Saskatoon to Cheyenne, Paramus to Coachella, Walla Walla to the Florida Georgia line, all converged in the Oak Room making it their stop for the night. In every type of flannel, dirty t-shirt, and hat, Steds long haulers took a break from their rigs and hauling to dance to the musical stylings of a playlist created by, well, themselves. Suffice it to say, a fun time was had by all. On the evening, Maddie, who was with long hauling Stedsman Jonathan Pal, (see above picture) shared, "The Steds Founder's Week Dance was so fun! Dancing to Taylor Swift with a bunch of truckers in South Dining Hall— what more could you ask for on a Friday night??” while Fr. Ralph, on his way to Valentine, Nebraska, and then on to Chardonnay, said "Don't hate me because I look good. This is for you, Brittney (Spears)!"

Founder's Week...

A Southern Union: A wedding cake of sorts

... is over, but some of its effects continue to be felt or rather tasted. That's particularly the case at Ed's, where the Southern Union, a special offering to commemorate the revival of Founder's Week, can still be found on the menu. A warm Krispy Kreme doughnut with melted butter, topped off with ice cream, the Southern Union was a Steds spin on a UVA staple, the Grillswith. With Paddy Foss, Steds AR and UVA grad, sharing technical knowhow with Ed's food techs, this Southern treat, uniting sweet with sweet, was substantially improved. On this special offering at Ed's, Foss shared, “I am happy to have the ability to share this piece of my culture with the Gentlemen. It warms my heart the same way the donut warms the vanilla ice cream.”

Your Sunday...

A snowy but yet smiling Founder: Sorin

... picture from Notre Dame. Like yesterday, there was a wintery mix of snow, sleet, and rain, making walking about campus less than ideal. Still, there's beauty this moisture that is falling, no matter what its state is. Still yet, it was a great close to Founder's Week... it might be cold outside, but the love of Steds keeps us warm! Let the shuttlecocks...

Shuttlecocks were flying...

… fly! And as they flew, so did the rain, sheet, and snow! This cherished event was a showcase for the Gentlemen to demonstrate their skill and prowess with racquet and shuttlecock. The Showdown saw the rise and fall of many teams, but in the end, junior upstarts, Will Dieterich and Jack Schichtel, faced off against another group of upstarts, Assistant Rector Nate McKeon and Vice President Ben Theis. The two teams battled it out before a crowd of badminton diehards who were treated to an excellent championship game.  The spirited and lively game saw McKeon and Theis, Shuttlecock Two, eek out a win over Wizard in Training. Congratulations to McKeon and Theis our Shuttlecock Showdown Champions!

Still, there was another showdown that saw Shuttlecock Two, Nate McKeon and Ben Theis, face a challenge from Shuttlecock One, Fr. Ralph and President Lynch. But due to poor court conditions and some very questionable officiating, Shuttlecock One was defeated by a score of 16 to 14. Sad indeed... and suffice it to say, several complaints were lodged.

On the day, Patrick Campbell, Steds junior and first time Showdowner, shared, “The Shuttlecock Showdown is the epitome of a gentleman’s game. The adversaries were painfully sublime, challenging even the grandest of competitors. The illustration of shuttlecocks flying is, dare I say, even grander than the royal procession of Bactria after Alexander the Great’s siege of Sogdian Rock. Nathaniel and Benjamin were the mightiest of foes, working with greater finesse than Michelangelo paining the Sistine Chapel and more delicately than the Hall of Mirrors in Versailles. To describe the event in one word: art. I look forward to next year’s showdown.”

Long haul truckers...

Keep on truck'n...

... was the theme of the day. This evening Founder's Week continued with round two at South Dinning's Oak Room. Earlier this week, the Gentlemen gathered for dinner and the feting of Josh Gambardella, but on tonight, they gathered for the Founder's Week Dance. Themed "long haul truckers," many came as truckers or truck stop workers... some even came as road kill. Dance goers enjoyed great music that was composed by not only the request of the Gentlemen themselves but also the the musical stylings of President Lynch, a rising dj for sure. In short, it was a magical evening. On the dance, AR Nate McKeon said, "They're in it for the long haul."

Breakfast of Princes...

DiLella and Raus: Steds heros

… can mean only one thing, Chick-Fil-A. And so it was, Chick-Fil-A and more in the Flounge.  At the direction of President Lynch and Vice Presidents O’Leary and Theis, an assortment of Chick-Fil-A sandwiches, Einstein bagels, and various fruit juices and coffees were served for the hungry masses before heading off to class. Helping make the breakfast come together were John DiLella and Peter Raus, ROTC Air Force and Navy respectively and RAs. On the breakfast offering, Fr. Ralph said, "It was an early start this morning. Breakfast make itself, and I was worried there for a bit, but everything came together thanks to many hands. Our heros this morning are DiLella and Raus!"

A day in the...

Showing off their skills...

... park has never been so fun, well, unless it's St. Edward's Park! It's true. St. Edward's does not belong to North Quad or God Quad rather we belong to St. Edward's Park, that green area just east of the Dome. Over time, our fountain may have disappeared, and we had to cede land for the building of Cavanaugh and Zahm Halls, but the fact remains, that the green space south of the Hall is St. Edward's Park. Amid games of badminton and corn hole, even a pick up game of badminton, cheese cake, fruit tarts, cider, coffees, and maybe a cigar, the Gentlemen of St. Ed's renewed their claim to this small tract of land as they celebrated "A Day in the Park."

On the day, Nikolai Eggleton, Steds freshman, said, "Some say having fun in the sun can’t be done in mid-November, except those people who have never heard of St. Edward’s Hall."

AND THERE IS MORE.... KEEP READING!

... while others hit the hospitality tent.

REDEDICATION DAY... Rededication Day, the day where the 2nd floor lounge is rededicated to the honor of Lugi Gregori, was Monday. In a moving ceremony filled with pageantry and tradition, Stedsmen past and present honored the artist, his mural, and those who have gone before us through poetry, historical readings, and personal reflections. On the Rededication Day service, Nate McKeon, Steds AR and soon-to-be lawyer, shared, "The Rededication of the Gregorian was, unsurprisingly, a glorious event celebrated with the amount of fanfare only a Steds event could stir up. The aura surrounding the ceremony was the perfect concoction of boisterousness and reverence. Amidst it all, the Gregorian glowed as brilliantly as it must have on its first day of dedication. Not a soul present doubted that Luigi Gregori himself was smiling upon us all."
