A bridge...

Campbell and his creation

... to nowhere. Yes, it may be a bridge to nowhere, but it did lead to success. Pat Campbell, Steds RA and mechanical engineering student, build a metal bridge for his art class. Now, this wasn't any ordinary bridge for an art class at Notre Dame as the success of Campbell's bridge building would be determined by its ability to support weight... and a lot of it. To test the design and integrity of Campbell's creation, students were asked to stand on it. First, a petite student stood on the bridge, and it did not break. Next, Campbell stood on his bridge without it breaking. Then, a football player took a turn, standing on it without it breaking. Finally, the petite student, Campbell, and the football player all stood together on the bridge without it breaking. Suffice it to say, mission accomplished... tasteful design and functional! On his bridge to nowhere, Campbell stated, “The Romans were the original master builders of the creations we call bridges. Building on their knowledge, I have constructed, a piece that is the epitome of engineering,  a metal bridge, not even for an engineering class, but for an art class. It held three students, but could have held even more. If only we could replicate this and make it a part of a grand entrance for St.Ed's... then I too could be a master builder in the line of the ancients!"

A Gentleman wanders...

Gentlemen wandering...

... yet again! Last time, the Gentlemen wandered down to the Wright Patterson Air Force Base to visit the National Museum of the U.S. Air Force, learning about the USAF as well as the NASA space program. Much was learned that day, but something else happened... a fire was lit. Yes, a fire for learning was a set that day, and it continued to burn well after that trip was over. So, another A Gentleman Wanders was planned. This time the Gentlemen wandered up to Grand Rapids, Michigan, to the Gerald Ford Presidential Museum. From airline deregulation to "whipping inflation", the Gentlemen learned all about the only president never to be elected, deepening their understanding, appreciation, and admiration for America's 38th president. On his wandering, Davin Maas stated, "I have always wanted to know more about Ford and his administration, and thanks to this wandering, my wondering has come to an end."

Your Sunday picture...

Spring is here

... from Notre Dame. Spring has sprung! With temperatures and sunlight steadily increasing, the harbingers of spring are appearing. The first to make an appearance is Galanthus nivalis, or snowdrops. Spotted on the north side of St. Jospeh's Lake, snowdrops are breaking forth, covering the woodland floor in a sea of bright white. Without doubt, other springtime flowers will soon make an appearance. Enjoy, and enjoy your Sunday wherever you may be!

Saturday's Squirrel.

On the prowl...

Several times this week a question that has arisen is "Where have all the squirrels gone?" Why? Because several times no squirrels were seen on God Quad. Not one squirrel was seen... not even one looking for a handout. Have our furry friends gone vacation? If not, then maybe they all taking a siesta? Yes, can someone tell us where have all the squirrels gone? Maybe this red tail hawk knows. On where all the squirrels have gone, this hawk non-verbaled, "Not sure. But if you know, then please tell!"

A Gentleman...

Constructing our Gentlemen were...

... constructs. You have heard about a gentleman ponders and a gentleman wanders, but there's another type of gentleman... one who constructs. With the inspiration of and under the guidance of Steds junior and resident Nebraskan, Graham Lorenz, the Gentlemen went to the local food bank and assisted in the construction of heavy shelving for foodstuffs. After all, food has to be stored! Not easy work, but our gentlemen didn't shy away from the heavy lifting nor dizzying heights. With many hands making light work, the Gentlemen constructed several shelves helping the Food Bank as well as those in need. On his participation, Jackson O'Neill, Steds freshman and resident Wisconsinite, shared, "A Gentleman Ponders, a Gentleman Wanders, and now a Gentleman Constructs. This gentleman does it all."

Dinner with...

Chicken Wings: It is what's for dinner

... the President. Well, President of St. Mary's, Katie Conboy. With Notre Dame, Holy Cross, and St. Mary's students all having privileges at each others' dining halls, the Gentlemen made the track over to St. Mary's for dinner. Now, many thought that the Gentlemen went over in search of dates for the upcoming Yacht Dance, but in all honesty, their visit was for something else entirely. If not for a date, then why were they there? Simple, chicken wings. It's true. And while the Gentlemen ate their fill of wings, their presence was a bit controversial as the St. Mary's President, who also happened to be present that night, perhaps for wings too, took a picture with the Steds group rather than students from St. Mary's. Controversy aside, the wings were enjoyed and there were smiles all around. On the trek for wings, Jack Schichtel, Steds senior and Michigander, shared, “With North Dining Hall cancelling Sunday Wing Night post-Covid, the Gentlemen of St. Edward’s Hall have found a home at Noble Family Dining Hall and been graciously welcomed by SMC’s President Katie Conboy. I feel like St. Edward, a king!”

A Gentleman still...

Wandering and learning: A Gentleman always is

... wanders. A gentleman ponders, but a gentleman also wanders too. And that's what happened AGAIN as several gentlemen wandered to down to Dayton, Ohio, to visit the National Museum for the U.S. Air Force. Why did they wander? To broaden their cultural and historical horizons as every good gentleman should. And how could they not? After all, it was another national museum! But what made this visit most special was that former Stedsmen, now Lieutenant of the USAF, John DiLella, gave a personal of the museum. On the wandering into his backyard, DiLella stated, “I knew it would be a plane and simple good day when these fine gentlemen wandered into America’s playground, Dayton, Ohio. Spirits were high and the boys couldn’t have had a better altitude. We laughed, we loved. We were moved by the painfully sublime landscape of our nation’s aviation history. At the end of the day, however, while the gentlemen learned about airplanes, I learned a far more valuable lesson. Although you might leave St. Ed’s, St. Ed’s will never leave you.”

That's what...

Smith, Edman, and Cherek: Smiling now, but will they later?

... friends are for, right? In good times and bad times. They'll be on your side forever more. Keep smiling, keep shining, know that you can always count on them for sure. That's what friends are for. And that's certainly what Marshall Smith and Levi Cherek are, friends to Will Edman, for only friendship could enable them to do what they did. And what did Smith and Cherek do for their friend Edman? They joined Edman for morning ROTC PT (physical training) at 5:30AM! Joining Edman for "Bring a friend to PT," Marshall and Cherek enjoyed an early morning workout with their friend Edman and other ROTC cadets. Why did they join him? Well, if it wasn't for the early morning gainz, then they certainly did it out of friendship. On having early morning company, Edman stated, "It was wonderful to bring two of my roommates to PT this morning, letting them see what it is that wakes them up at 0530 every Thursday morning, and giving them a small taste of life in ROTC. Sure, they said they thought I was crazy for doing that every week, but I appreciated their willingness to incur this craziness for a day!"

Froth...

McClimon and Sexton: Frothing it up

... it up! Recently, a shipment of froth powder arrived at Steds, and the Gentlemen were ecstatic. Why so much excitement over froth powder? Because cappuccinos were now back on the menu! For too long, the Steds coffee machine was running at a less than optimal level as a nationwide shortage of froth powder prevented the making of cappuccinos. You see, froth powder allow for the frothy top, making a cappuccino a cappuccino. Without that powder, well, cappuccinos were dream. On making it froth at Steds, Mace Sexton, assistant rector and 2nd year law student, shared, “I’m not much of coffee drinker myself, but I’m happy to have played a part in ending the cappuccino drought here at Steds. And I definitely hear and see more folks using the coffee machine since the return of the cappuccino, so I think it’s safe to say the cappuccinos were greatly missed.”

Take it in

... from Notre Dame. Every now and then, the permacloud takes a break, and when does, then there's most certainly a pretty sunset to take in. And one place to take it all in is on God Quad. Just east of the second oldest residence hall on campus, this picture of Mary and the Dome was taken, capturing the brilliance of the setting sun as well as the Dome. Saturday Squirrel.

HELP!

Our furry friends are fearless. Indeed, they are never scared nor too proud to ask for a hand out. They are never intimidated by our persons and so go about campus as if they own it. But every now and then, our squirrels get a panicked. Maybe it's because they saw a red tail hawk overhead. If not, maybe it's because they forgot where they buried that last nut. Still yet, perhaps it's because they've gone out on a limb too far. That was certainly the case with our furry friend on God Quad. Frozen out of fear, this squirrel, on a wispy twig, couldn't move, for fear that his weight should make the whole thing snap. On being in a precarious perch, this squirrel non-verbaled, "Catch me please!"

Our...

Williams and Hendrickson: Boxing for keeps

... hero! It might be his senior year, but Michael Hendrickson isn't putting it into neutral to coast in across the graduation line. Perish the thought! Instead, Hendrickson has been training for Bengal Bouts. Not for the faint of heart, Bengal Bouts, an amateur charity boxing competition helping the Holy Cross missions in Bangladesh, started back in the Fall Semester. Yes, that's right, the Fall Semester, with daily trainings, practices, and more. Indeed, it is not for the faint of heart nor for the undisciplined. Hendrickson, along with fellow Stedsman and defending Bengal Bout champion, Josh Williams, started their journey back in the fall, and now, it's go time. The 93rd Bengal Bouts began yesterday in the Dahnke Ballroom, and while Williams had a bye, Michael "Hendy" Hendrickson was in the ring. Supported by a crowd of Stedsmen, Hendy gave it his all, holding nothing back, but it wasn't to be as the fight was called. Regardless, of a win or loss, Hendy did more than most ever do, and suffice it to say, he has our admiration and respect. On Hendy's go in the ring, Williams shared, "Mike Hendrickson has been working hard all season to prepare for bouts this year.  He had an epic comeback season after first joining the club freshman year, but having to take a two year sabbatical to focus on other commitments.  Although the ref stopped the fight sooner than we would have liked, I’m proud of all Mike has done this year and for leaving it all in the ring.”

Happy Super...

It's SCGP Day...

... Chinese Groundhogs Presidents' Day! Super Bowl Sunday marks a special day for our nation as we gather around TVs of all sizes to take in a spectacle that is uniquely American, over indulge in food of all sorts, and critically analyze overpriced commercials. But at Steds, Super Bowl Sunday is much more than watching a football game... because at Steds it's all about the Super Bowl, Chinese New Year, Groundhog's Day, AND Presidents' Day! They said it couldn't be done, but don't tell that to any Gentleman of Steds because they just did it. This past Sunday, a celebration of epic portions was celebrated in the Flounge with an assortment of snack chips, sodas, Chinese food, and cherry pie. In the end, regardless of who you were cheering for on the football field, America won, and at Steds, FOUR holidays were celebrated at once. Suffice it to say, it was huge. On the uniquely Steds celebration, Marshall Smith, Steds sophomore and resident Californian, shared,  "When you combine four great holidays, critics worry that they’ll each lose their individual glory. But as always, Steds delivered on this special Sunday. Super Chinese Groundhog Presidents’ Day had something to make everyone, especially tofu lovers and patriotic Americans, happy for an evening."

A priest...

... and his mullet. Everyone at Steds, including the rector, took a stand against malaria. Growing his hair out since June, Fr. Ralph joined our brave boys at the front, donning a mullet and doing his worse against the enemy. But his mullet just wasn't a weapon against malaria. No, it was much more than that, for it really was a way of life. Despite receiving an order to demobilize and demullet, Fr. Ralph kept his mullet as it had become a part of his everyday life, accompanying him wherever and whatever he did. Indeed, with his mullet, Fr. Ralph was never alone. Now, for the very the first time, seen in black and white filters, Fr. Ralph's mullet, a Nebraska Prairie Schooner, was captured as life was experienced. On the release of his sharing of life with his mullet, Fr. Ralph shared, "What can I say? I was young and filled with irrational exuberance just like everyone else was. I too got a mullet, but now, I can't seem to part with it. It's really a part of me."

The Starships...

Starship: Serving Logan today...

... have landed! Just when we thought we couldn't get any lazier or make the sidewalks more crowded, well, we did. Last week campus saw the deployment of Starships, an on campus food delivery system sponsored by Grubhub. Now, instead of going to the Duncan Student Center with your friends to get Chick Fil A sandwich, students will just stay in their room, ordering food, coming out only to collect the delivery at the front of door of whatever building they may be in, avoiding all exercise and any conversation. Housed by Steds in the Campus Mail Building, the Starships are deployed at 8am, passing by Steds in parade fashion, and take up positions across campus at various eateries. At night, the Starships return to the Campus Mail Building for charging at Midnight. What do the Gentlemen think of the Starships? Well, the jury is still out. On being spotted using a Starship, Logan Wilson said, "These new robots are definitely going to change campus for the better. To emphasize this point, I’ll leave you with a quote from Terminator and the great Sarah Connor, 'The unknown future rolls toward us. I face it for the first time with a sense of hope.'"

Democracy in...

Hall Government in action...

... action. Every week in Steds Flounge, the Steds Hall President, Aidan Tompkins, and his Vice Presidents, John Digenan and Dan McGuire, hold court at a weekly Hall Government Meeting with their constituents. Regardless if the meetings are short or long, they are always entertaining as well as informative, briefing residents on Hall happenings and various campus matters. But if you have a really important Hall Government Meeting because you have something worth telling, how do you, as the President, get more of your constituents present? A great question, but for President Tompkins, there is a simple answer. Tompkins gave the masses one thing- food. Providing all meeting attendees Raising Cane's, attendance at the weekly Hall Government Meeting went through the proverbial roof. And good thing too as upcoming hall elections were discussed. On having food present at the meeting, a Stedsman, speaking on the condition of anonymity, said, "Augustus Caesar once said, 'give the people bread and games.' Perhaps a modern interpretation of that line would be 'giv'em chicken wings and anything fried.'''

... and the hungry masses.

Your Sunday picture...

Better one with cold...

... from Notre Dame. While the groundhog said there was more winter in store for us, it would appear that he might be wrong. Instead of a winter scape, we have been enjoying a scape that may be less beautiful and photographic but is certainly not winter like. Oh, the grey clouds and dead grass are nothing to write home about, but the temps in the fifties, well, that is. Enjoy, and enjoy your Sunday wherever you may be!

... or better two with warm temps?

Saturday Squirrel.

With the recent warming, our furry friends have been a burst of activity about the campus quads. Here and there, the squirrels go bright eyed and bushy tailed, looking for buried food as well as the occasional hand out. Still, others are actually doing something else- work. That was certainly the case for this squirrel spotted on Library Quad. With a face fill of leaves, this squirrel was taking advantaged of the warm temps to do some repair work on his leaf home. On doing some home repairs, this squirrel non-verbaled, "These leaves taste absolutely awful."

The search...

Steds hockey

... continues. The Steds hockey team continues to look for a win. While a win was predicted by many, the most recent game against Stanford Keenan ended in a terrible and disappointing loss. It was rumored that the mercy rule was invoked as Steds went down by a score of seven to one. While the rumor was not true, what was true was that the opposing team had a Canadian semi-pro player in their line up. This, coupled with deficient refereeing, accounted for Steds lack luster showing on the ice and bruising loss. On the loss, Matt Vawrinek, Steds junior and absent hockey player, shared, "We had a lot going against us out there on the ice. Still, we had a lot of missing talent too. What can I say, but studies come first?"

When a design...

Crudele: Another triumph

... comes together, it's art. But when several designs come together, it's a masterpiece. That's certainly the case for Devin Crudele '20. Steds Apparel Commissioner for not one but two years, Crudele was responsible for designing an Hall apparel line that captured not only its gravitas but also its joie de vie. It was never an easy task, but this design genius never shrugged away from the challenge, producing four collections as well as a number of special individual pieces during his tenure. Recently, Crudele took some pieces from his personal Steds collection, amassed over the years, and well, did something that only a design genius could do. On taking his designs to the next level, Crudele stated, “After retirement from Apparel commissioner, I had been looking for a way to put my Steds gear to use. I finally sent them off to have a quilt made, and now, I will be staying warm the rest of winter... and looking fabulous too.”

If America runs

Avey: Don't forget to tip

... on Dunkin', then Steds runs on Ed's. With the previous Ed's manager-in-chief, Isaiah Alvenida, now on vacation, studying abroad, Ed's is now under the tutelage of Drew McClimon. I dare say the transition was so smooth, with no loss in service nor quality, that no one noticed the change at the helm. And as the pizza sticks, paninis, and smoothies continue to be lovingly served up at Ed's, the studying, camaraderie, and much more at Steds continues to hum along on schedule all with the precision of a German passenger train. On making that precision a reality, Brendan Avey, sophomore and Ed's culinary representative, shared, "Ed’s is an amazing place to work with great people, great food, and even better commission rates... I wish."

Calling all...

Seniors on the ice: Ramsey and Theis...

... ice skaters! We're calling any and everyone who has a desire to play hockey for Steds. That's right. While prior experience is always appreciated, actual playing experience is not required. The intra-mural hockey season has started, and as always, Steds is fielding a team. Forced by RecSports to pair with Pangborn Hall, Steds is carrying the team, providing not only the manpower but also uniforms as only Steds can do. While the spirit is strong, the season has gotten off to a slow start with a crushing loss to Sorin/Stanford Halls. Down but not out, Steds rallied the following week, playing for a tie. What's in store for the boys in green and gold? Hopefully, a win. On the hockey season's tough start, Andrew Kurowski, Steds freshman and resident Virginian, stated, "It can only get better. After a loss and a tie, we're due for a win."

... while senior coach Tommy Gallagher looks on.

It came...

Welcome back...

... home! The coveted Navonic Institute Eurocup Trophy finally came home to Steds. Won in the fall by a small and committed group of Stedsmen and engraving finally complete, noting the winners, the cup now resides in the Gregorian Lounge. Sharing space with the Hall's coffee machine, the Eurocup Trophy is a fine edition and only adds to the lore and history of the lounge. Leading the past THREE successful campaigns, Eoghan Fay, senior and Hall D.A.D., shared, "Much as Benjamin Disraeli said of Sir Robert Peel, it seems Steds caught the Whigs bathing and walked away with their clothes."

... but did you ever really leave?
