The word in the hallway is...

O'Donnell- An excited Yacht Dance goer...

...that Eric O'Donnell is glad to be a resident of Sted's. Why? It's the last day of class, and for the Gentlemen of St. Edward's, it means- Yacht Dance in Chicago. On his participation in this storied and magical evening, O'Donnell said, "It will be the blast to end all blast!" Indeed, it will Eric... indeed it will. Anchors aweigh!

Plague and Paintball Sunday.

Gentlemen paint ballers reloading for their next assault

After a rousing presentation on Typhoid Fever by AJ Tablada, the Gentlemen retired to the paintball field to relieve the pressures and anxiety from classes and impending finals not to mention the continued search for a date to Wednesday's Yacht Dance in Chicago.  The paint balling went on for several hours, and there were many casualties. On being shot, Fr. Ralph, Sted's Rector, said, "I was hit. The shot came from the back and to the left...maybe from the grassy knoll."

Justice for Arthur Jackson!

Does anyone have a lighter? Certainly NOT Arthur Jackson!

2nd Floor Assistant Rector and 3rd Law student, Jon Heintz, began his (fake) trial career off with a victory, successfully securing an acquittal for his (fake) client, Arthur Jackson, in a commercial arson case.

The theater lasted about 2.5 hours, and only one juror fell asleep.  When asked about Jon's performance, juror #8 said, "Who? Look, I'm just here for the free lunch."

Indeed, you are juror #8... indeed you are.

Congrats, Jon!  1-0!

Saturday's Squirrel.

                                                     Hi neighbor.                            *Photo by Sielski

We are not alone. No, we are definitely not alone. The warm weather has brought out those whom we share this campus with… fuzzy fur balls whose antics can be hilarious, quizzical, and at times, down right audacious. Thanks to Neil Sielski’s photographic talents of capturing “nature in the raw,” The Gentlemen’s Monthly brings you a new feature, “Saturday’s Squirrel,” a highlighting of one of our loveable furry campus neighbors. Who knows, next time when you are on campus, you might just recognize a “Saturday's Squirrel.”

This is not your...

Sted's freshmen putting the loft model through her paces

...typical Sted's loft. Indeed, it is not! Yesterday, the University unveiled its much anticipated custom made loft that could replace the current self-constructed lofts at Sted's this fall. While only the double model was constructed, drawings of lofts for singles, triples and quads were also unveiled. The model will be up until Monday, and residents are encouraged to give their comments and criticisms. On seeing the model loft, Andrew Hildreth, Sted's freshman hanging from the loft pictured above, said, "It's everything we wanted and more!"

Parting is such...

You just don't give this away!

...sweet sorrow! A sign that the semester is coming to a close is the arrival of the storage truck. Taking up residence in the Sted's parking lot, the storage truck slowly becomes the repository of what could rightly be called the "Treasure of St. Ed's"... its lofts. While the Gentlemen are busy dismantling and storing their lofts on the truck for the summer, the question on everyone's mind is, "Will these lofts return?" Time will tell, but on taking down his loft, Reed Fujan, Sted's freshman, said, "As sad of a day as it was to see my loft go, it will always have a spot in my heart."

They're getting married!

The future Justin and Lauren Siler

It's official. They are getting married! Justin Siler '11, Stedsman and world traveler, and Lauren Miller ’12 of McGlinn Hall, will be married in September of 2015 at the Basilica of the Sacred Heart. Congratulations and best wishes to Justin and Lauren respectively.

When asked about her marriage to a Stedsman and becoming a part of the Sted’s family, Lauren said, "Winning in college was getting invited to the Yacht Dance, but winning in the real world is marrying a Sted's guy."

I really like Lauren...

Tour de St. Edward.

Now, that's a nice looking loft!

The tour continues! We’re on site with room 304. Here’s what Sted’s juniors Carson, Jason, and David (pictured above) had to say when I stopped by and paid them all a visit…

St.Ed: With three persons in the room isn't it a tight fit?

Juniors: It depends on how you define tight fit. Living within an arm's length or two of your roommates at all times when we're all convened in 304? Sure. (Showering, laundry and deodorant usage abound). But by Hall room standards, we are living the high life. Two room triples are hard to come by, and by our calculations, we have most spacious and well laid out room in the Hall. Those poor fellows in [*insert reputedly small-roomed male dorm here...so any other male dorm*] have it way worse!

St.Ed: How did the building of your loft go?

Juniors: The building of the loft was pretty painless. I actually came back from class one day and POOF there it was! Carson and David knocked it out in no time and they both know their way around a drill bit; so I would have just gotten in the way.

St.Ed: What you do wish that your room had?

Juniors: Is a jacuzzi too far out of the question? Haha, just kidding...but seriously, like with lights and iPod speakers?

St.Ed: That’s a bit of tall order. Let me work on that. Still, what would you like to see in this summer's renovation?

Juniors: A renovated Sted’s would do well to implement a pool table because what is a gentleman without his billiards I daresay? The nerdy side of me says throw in some small single-table study rooms for group work that doesn't strip the productivity away from everyone in the 4th floor study room. But pool table takes priority over that as well. Still, there are votes making the roof into a common area.  All that prime space is currently just going to waste! I'm thinking we put a hot tub, perhaps a mini-golf course, up there too.

St.Ed: Guys, get out of my mind!!!

Day the music died.

Resquiescat in pace, dear old friend

We recently had another loss at Sted's. Like the treadmill, the Chapel's piano "gave out" after a rousing rendition of "Wade in the Water" at Sunday Mass. Technicians and tuners were called, but nothing could be done. Of the piano's passing, Ned Vogel, Hall music director, said, "It's certainly sad to see her go, but I think it's safe to say she'll be happy in that big concert hall sky...with Liberace." Suffice it to say, difficult as it is, we are currently looking for a replacement.

Happy Easter!

He is risen; He is truly risen! Happy Easter to you and your families. Here is a performance of Notre Dame's Liturgical Choir, featuring none other than Sted's very own Brian Manzo. Enjoy!

What's up with lofts?

Dan Wrapp- Sted's junior and concerned loft owner

That's a great question.

Well, in the words of former Sectary of Defense Donald Rumsfled, "There are known knowns; there are things that we know that we know. We also know there are known unknowns; that is to say we know there are some things we do not know. But there are also unknown unknowns, the ones we don't know we don't know."

Okay, I guess what I am trying to say is that...

...we KNOW that there will be a mock up of the new University loft this coming Thursday in the 4th floor study lounge.

...we KNOW that it is UNKNOWN whether this mock up loft will be the loft that becomes standard in all rooms at Sted's next year.

...and there are probably UNKNOWN UNKNOWNS here, but as you guessed it, they're unknown unknowns at this time.

Advancing on all fronts.

In the words of the venerable Tony the Tiger... "Go get 'em tiger!"

Yes. Sted's Sports is advancing on all sports fronts. Thanks to the dedication players and the "strategery" employed by their coaches, Sted's lacrosse and soccer teams have advanced to their respective playoffs. Of this achievement, Calvin Rutherford, Sted's junior and Captain of the Hall's Big Cats soccer team, said, "Two more to go. The Cat's are out on the prowl. They're hungry and ready to bring home a championship."

In his own words.

He's serious- he's got a list!

Daniel Rish, Sted’s senior and out of luck baseball and whiffleball coach, describes his last chance for glory from a championship win and redemption as a Sted’s coach.

Rish said,

“Facing an impending graduation, I fully well know that there is no next year.  That's why I'm working this softball team as hard as possible.  If I see someone smiling on the field, I know that means they aren't taking this seriously enough.  How can we expect to beat the powerhouse "Chemistry Department" team if people are having fun?

Our team name is "WeBetterGetOffTheWaitlist" (we did), and we are 3-0, despite playing one game short-handed, including a player with a suspected broken foot."

All I can say is... good luck!
