Your Sunday picture...

Mary, are you there?

... from Notre Dame. With warm afternoons and cool evenings, students have awoken to a campus enveloped in an early morning fog. Burning off by midmorning, the fog shrouds everything, giving an eerie and spooky feel to the morning campus commute. Here's a view of Mary and the Dome, and if you look closely, you'll notice you cannot see Mary's head. That's a thick fog! Enjoy, and enjoy your Sunday wherever you may be!

Saturday Squirrel.

A feast before famine?

Winter is coming, and our furry friends know it. While it looks like they are frolicking in the leaves, enjoying the care free life, they are doing anything but that. No, they are busy on the look out for food stocks for those colder and leaner times that are just around the proverbial meteoritical corner. That's what our furry friends are doing on campus, and it should come as no surprise that's exactly what our furry friends are doing everywhere. And that's certainly what this squirrel, spotted in Avon By The Sea, New Jersey, was doing... preparing for the coming winter. This squirrel happened to be at the right place at the right time, spotting an ear of gently discarded corn outside the local municipal building. On getting the ear of golden corn home, our squirrel non-verbaled, "I just hit the lotto!"

Fall Break is...

Ryan and Riley taking it all in...

... over, but where did our Stedsmen go? What did they do? Yes, where did they go, and what did they do to rest, to recharge... to take a break if you will... from all their studying, paper writing, and general procrastinating? Well, one Stedsman, Riley Kerrigan, made a visit home where he not only caught up on sleep but also everything that Lake Tahoe, Nevada, had to offer... and there's a lot. It was just what break needed to be- a break! On having their son home for break, Ryan Kerrigan '95, shared, “Absolutely awesome to have Riley home for Fall Break at Lake Tahoe. As is our custom, we had a question of the day at dinner, and asked Riley what the best aspect of Notre Dame was, and he replied, without hesitation - STEDS."

Can't argue with that!

... and thinking about Steds!

It was...

A beautiful sight...

... a game! Amid a steady and driving rain, the Notre Dame Men's Soccer team took on Michigan in their season closer at Alumni Stadium. Both teams began the match holding nothing back, especially, Paddy Burns, Steds junior and ND defender. And as if lighting had struck, the Wolverines scored a surprise goal, a surprise to all, especially our Irish. But instead of losing hope and succumbing to frustration, the Irish rallied after halftime, scoring an early equalizer. And even when the Wolverines went up again, the Irish were undeterred, coming back, scoring yet another equalizer. Finally, with four minutes to go, the Irish took the lead and the win. It was an Irish win to remember!

With Stedsmen on the pitch and Fr. Ralph on the side lines as team chaplain, there is no question that Steds was present, but there was another Stedsman present... one who was heard but not seen. Who was this Stedsman, this Quasimodo, if you will, of the ND soccer pitch? It was our very own Paddy Foss! Calling the game for ESPN, Foss was there, sort of, calling the game and representing Steds like no one else could... on TV! On calling the game, Foss said, "I don’t always call the Irish, but when I do, they beat the dreaded Michigan, score a bunch, and are led by Stedsmen at the back — we call that a complete game."

We remember...

... the Founder, especially today, on All Souls Day. With his anniversary of his death on October 31st, we remember Sorin and all the departed. Earlier today, a visit was made to Holy Cross Cemetery, the community cemetery for the Congregation of Holy Cross, located on the north side of St. Mary's Lake, to visit Fr. Sorin's grave and all Holy Cross religious. Even though Fr. Sorin's grave is front and center of all, something he did not want, it is only fitting, for without him, none of this would be! Fr. Sorin and all our beloved dead, requiescat in pace!

Controversy!

A ribbon? But they know...

The Shuttlecock Showdown may be over and new champions enjoying their reign, but there is a bit of controversy waffling about the hallways of Steds. You see, while the shuttlecocks were flying on North Quad, it appears that someone brought a duly registered and legitimate team's championship run to an illegal and premature end. Yes, Shuttlecock One, the team of Frs. Ralph Haag and Kevin Sandberg, was knocked out of the tourney early as rules were conveniently bent. What was the controversy? Facing off against Hall President and Student Union Board Representative, Aidan Tompkins and Ryan Connelly, Shuttlecock One was only allowed to play only one match instead of the customary best out of three matches. Why did this happen? Was it to eliminate the Hall's favorite team? Or perhaps it was to make another team's path to victory easier? Who knows, but what we do know is that this stinks if you are Shuttlecock One. And as if to draw attention away from this travesty, Shuttlecock One was given an "honorable mention" award.

On the premature exit from the tourney, Fr. Sandberg, C.S.C., Steds in-residence priest and right handed player, said, "Just imagine what would have happened if I had played right handed!" Still, Fr. Ralph shared, "I demand satisfaction. I demand another two matches to be played. And I won't be bought off with some ribbon. I am lodging a complaint with whatever legitimate authority that oversees pickup games of badminton... on a college level of course."

Let loose...

Players played for keeps...

… the shuttlecocks! And flew the shuttlecocks they did. Yes, the shuttlecocks flew as the Steds Shuttlecock Showdown got underway on North Quad. Delayed by the ND football game, the Showdown was moved to Sunday, and while it was cloudy, at least there was no rain or snow like last year. Still, like last year, the Showdown saw the rise and fall of many teams, but in the end, Patrick Campbell and Ben Silverio, Steds seniors, claimed the championship, defeating a sophomore team of Dane Storch and Louis Rauch. This team of seniors showed their seniority, battling it out before a crowd of badminton devotees, who were treated to an excellent championship game.  The spirited and lively game saw the seniors pull out a victory, one worthy of the annals of Steds sporting history.

On the win, Campbell said, "Winning the Shuttlecock Showdown has made my senior year. The teams were in top form, and our competitors, Dane and Louis, were excellent challengers. But their best wasn't good enough. Still, with great matches all around, it was a great day to be a Stedsman on North Quad... and a great day to be a Shuttlecocker!"

Still, on the win, Silverio shared, “The three greatest days of my life were when George Bush was re-elected, when I was placed in Sted’s, and when my team won the infamous Shuttlecock Showdown!"
