Is that edible...

Golden...

... or not? That a great question to ask especially when you come across mushrooms in the forest. This was certainly the case after running across these mushrooms growing a living tree in the wooded area just north of St. Joseph's Lake. With the leaves of fall now fallen, these golden mushrooms stood out like the proverbial sore thumb. Golden Pholiota, Pholiota aurivella, cluster on living trunks and logs of deciduous trees, especially maple, elm and birch trees, especially from September to November. Are they edible? Potentially edible. To avoid distress, it strongly encouraged not to them. On seeing these mushrooms, Fr. Terry said, "Maybe equals no."
