Old news...

Morrison, McQueen, Moriarty: Real golfers

... is better than no news. That's right, and thanks to all the happenings of the Hall, there's a lot of old stories to share. Here's one such story. Back in the fall, a few Stedsmen discovered that the golf course was open, thus providing a constructive and competitive diversion. And when all the clubs ceased swinging and putters stopped putting, nothing short of a miracle had happened as the Steds golfers were shown to be anything but duffers. This underdog team of juniors, Alex Morrison, Westen McQueen, and Brendan Moriarty exceeded all expectations scoring a +1 for a 36... much better than the Vegas odds of a 43! On the stellar performance of his team, Morrison said, "Team Impeach Peter Nichols (Nichols is a fellow junior and the Hall President" will forever go down in history!"

Yes, everyone's favorite rancher is back, Rancher Larry. Recently, I received a Western Union telegram from him. Rancher Larry says, "Good evenin’ folks! I hope his message finds y’all well. It seems bitter winter is setting in here on the ranch. Me and my hound have been busy rounding up the livestock. You’d be surprised how strong a cold wind can throw a sheep wayward. Still, it is time to settle in to my humble cabin, with a crackling fire and tall glass of whiskey, and get back to studying medicine. Merry Christmas to the Gents and extended St. Ed's family..."

Taking a break from our furry friends, our attention is naturally drawn to the ACC Championship game in Charlotte. Unfortunately, Clemson had their starting quarterback in the game this time, and well, it made a difference. Still, the Notre Dame football faithful were there, and of course, many Stedsmen were in the stands. One such Stedsman was former Hall President and native Georgian, Jay Mathes '12. There, with his girlfriend Maggie, Jay saw our championship hopes dashed as the Irish lost 34 to 10. On being asked for a quote on being at today's game, Mathes said, "Ask me tomorrow."

Painfully sublime: Swift's painting

... do when you have so much Christmas Break on your hands? With classes starting on February 3rd, the Stedsmen have a lot of time on their hands. Without any doubt, much of that time will be devoted to sleep and napping. Still, a fair share of time will be devoted to Notre Dame Football, especially on this coming Saturday with the ACC Championship game in Charlotte. Still yet, some time will be devoted to watching Premier League soccer matches, especially Tottenham games. Of course, time will be directed to other pursuits and happenings of our Stedsmen, and in this posting, we will be investigating what those pursuits, happenings, and adventures are. During his break, John Swift, Steds senior and aspiring med school student, took up painting and painted- what else but- a wall at his home. See above. Clearly done with a steady hand and an eye for detail, this Steds crown in green captures so much and is a triumphant for this young painter. On his painting, Swift said, "All that I hope is that the Founder can look down and smile when he sees this." I am sure he is John... I am sure he is!

Better late...

Rutowski adding to Perpetua's beauty

...than never. That was certainly the case for Steds senior, John Rutowski, who was the last Stedsmen to decorate the Hall's Christmas Giving Tree. The tree, Pertpetua, who was already beautiful to begin with, was even more resplendent with this and all the others decorations hung by the Gentlemen. On decorating the tree, Rutowski said, "It's what the great Stedsman Daniel Wrapp would have wanted." Indeed, he would have John... indeed he would have.

... from Notre Dame. On the south side of campus and just before Eddy Street Commons is the Hayes Sculpture Garden. Once the University's garbage dump, the area has been repurposed and redesigned to become a unique, outdoor art venue. Home to several pieces of unique sculptures, the garden has also become home to a number of squirrels... but that's another story. Here's is a look at one of those unique sculptures... a horse. Verdeschi: No joking... we need your hair!

... Against Malaria is coming up, or is it? Indeed, it is the question on the mind of many here at Steds, and lucky for us, before we left for Christmas Break, I had the opportunity to speak with Matt Verdeschi, Steds sophomore and Mullet Against Malaria commissioner. If anyone knows what's going on HERE, it's going to be Verdeschi. Here's what he had to say...

St.Ed: Is St. Ed’s Mullets Against Malaria going to happen this year, or has the Covid joined forces with malaria to cancel it?

Verdeschi: It’s on! The Gentlemen of St. Edward’s Hall will be participating in our seventh annual Mullets Against Malaria. COVID-19 has captured the attention of many to combat the virus, but we will keep our responsibilities in mind. Even though COVID-19 poses challenges, Stedsmen will remain committed to fighting malaria because, as always, we do it for the kids. Malaria is a preventable disease, so despite the new challenges we face, we will work hard to protect those in need. 

St.Ed: What is Mullets Against Malaria anyway?

Verdeschi: Mullets Against Malaria is an electrifying way for St. Edward’s Hall to fundraise for Nothing But Nets, a charity providing mosquito nets to protect millions of people at risk of contracting malaria. Growing luscious mullets requires patience and months of preparation. As a hall, we decide to no longer receive haircuts early into the first semester. This timeline allows us to grow out the best looking mullets for the time we arrive back on campus for the second semester. Through our fundraising efforts and stunning looks, this event will allow us to make meaningful impacts and draw more attention to the cause. 

St. Ed: How are you rallying the men to offer their locks to this noble cause?

Verdeschi: Nothing rallies a group of men more than the promise of strikingly good looks. Everyone loves the classic look of a mullet and the months of preparation build up anticipation for the breath-taking product. Of course, Stedsmen readily put forth the needed effort for this cause, but the inclusion of mullets makes this event even more exciting for us. Also, we love celebrating our good looks with an event that will raise additional funds. Celebrating with a fashionable mullet is a way for us to be proud of our accomplishments and draw in more enthusiasm from others. Most importantly, our leader, Father Ralph, will be participating in mullets this year. His dedication will inspire others to commit their efforts towards the cause.  

St.Ed: As our brave leader in this fight, what do you think it will take to come out on top?

Verdeschi: In past years we have successfully raised meaningful contributions for Nothing But Nets. To maintain this same level of success, we need to keep the same level of excitement across the entire hall. Our focus has certainly shifted towards COVID-19, but if we can stay attentive to the good we can give to the world, then we will be successful. We keep in mind that nets only cost $10, so contributions of any amount, and from anyone, will save lives.

Irish eyes...

... are on their leprechaun! And how could they not be? This year has been memorable in so many ways, but if you need another reason, then here it is. This FIRST time EVER in Notre Dame history where the University has had a REAL Irish leprechaun. It's true! Notre Dame made history as well as added yet another trivia fact with Irishman AND Stedsman, Conal Fagan, filling what has to be the most beloved University mascot position in the nation. With an Irish flare that only an Irishman could provide, Fagan did a phenomenal job rallying the crowds to cheer on their Irish sport teams. What's his secret? Aside from being Irish, it's drawing attention. This is something Fagan has done both during and after the game, and recently, it was captured on video and immediately gained national attention. On making an incredible field goal, Fagan said, "It's a proud day for St. Edward's Hall, but when you play with the caliber of player such as Tommy Huber and Chris Brady, fellow Stedsmen, it helps a lot. It's a big achievement, but it hopefully points towards the next installment of the St. Edward's Derby (intra-hall soccer match) against the Big Cats. One day we'll grace the fields of Stephan again!"

Oh, dear... a deer!

Our furry friends are taking a break this week, and as they do, other campus friends are taking a step out into the limelight. On the north side of campus there is a walnut grove, and right next to that, there is the old abandoned Douglas Road. This area has become home a number of white tail deer. Even though they are losing their camouflage as the leaves fall, the deer are still difficult to spot. Yes, some times you don't know they are even there until you are right in their midst! On being spotted in the walnut grove, this deer non-verbaled from afar, "Oh dear."

Every bird watcher's dream of spotting...

With our furry friends taking a break from the blog this Saturday, our feathered friends have filled the void. Spotted by Fr. Terry Ehrman, CSC, on God Quad, this American Gold Finch was enjoying some sunshine and a terrific view of Mary and the Main Building. On the spotting this "flashy" bird on campus, Fr. Terry said, "This bird caught my attention just like a car did when I was in San Diego. But who's imitating who?"

Not so far...

Hincka and friend: Studying right up until the end

... in the distant past was this Stedsman, Danny Hincka, and his girlfriend out in St. Ed's Park. What were they doing? Under the setting sun of a beautiful and mild November day, these two took advantage of the great weather to study in the waning days of Finals Week. And what better place to do that than St. Ed's Park? On studying outside with a friend, Hincka said, "It's been a semester full of new experiences and adapting to change. There were unbelievable highs (go Irish beat Tigers!) and a lot of relying on friends to get through the lows."

On three... one, two...

With everyone away on break, our squirrels are discovering they have campus unto themselves. No longer do they need to share anything... the sidewalks, quads, trees, and paths around the lakes. They even have complete run of the trash cans. And while that might be the case, our furry friends are quickly learning they are all empty. Sadly, gone are treasures they once held. Still, the squirrels are willing to take a chance and drive into a can, and that's what this squirrel was doing outside of Steds. On taking a plunge, this squirrel non-verbal, "It's not easy. It takes a lot of courage!"

Let it snow

... snowed. Yes, just as kids left campus had to snow. Still, it was a beautiful snow fall. While it snowed during the morning, it gave way to rain in the afternoon. On the snow fall, Fr. Terry Ehrman, C.S.C., botanist and theologian, said, "Yup, it's about time."

Take a break

With students having departed for Christmas Break, a silence has descended across campus. At first, it is most unnerving. Where is the laughter? Where are the shouts to friends passing on the quad? Yes, where has it all gone? But then, in the silence, it sinks in... we're on break. And yes, everyone needs one! So, put down the books. Don't set an alarm. Lounge around in your pjs. Indulge in some comfort food. Tap a nap if you feel like it. Watch another episode of your favorite show or whatever it may be. Why? Because you're on break. Make the most of it, and enjoy!

Sunday joy

... from Notre Dame. This past week saw the end of finals and a close of the Fall Semester, and nothing captures this milestone better than this setting sun on St. Joseph's Lake. A tranquil scene to a semester that had its share of highs and lows, surprises and setbacks, triumphs and failures. Wherever you are, let's slow down for a moment, and take in the moment, noting you've been and where you've yet to go. And as you do, don't forget to enjoy your Sunday wherever you may be!

Pumpkin for one 

Even though Halloween has long since past, its "trappings" are still with us. Yes, all about campus, from the lakes to the various quads, remnants, usually smashed, can be seen. And while it causes an unpleasant sight, there are some who are most happy at the mess. Who are these happy campers? Why our furry friends of course. The smashed pumpkins all about campus have been a most welcome addition to the sundry list of edibles that our squirrels enjoy. On being spotted nibbling on a pumpkin outside Fisher Hall, this squirrel non-verbaled, "It's de-lish!"

A long time ago...

Where is Steds?

... this picture was taken. Every year a picture of the incoming class is taken in the Stadium. Obviously, the Covid made taking this year's photo for the Class of 2024 a challenge, but after some thought, a solution was devised. Spread them out! Yes, spread the students out... and it's not difficult to do as you have plenty of space in the football stadium! With a solution, a photo was taken in August, and now, if you go to the 2nd floor of the Duncan Student Center, walk towards the Office of Residence Life, you'll see the photo for the Class of 2024. BUT... can you pick out our Stedsmen? Here's a hint. They're wearing their green Welcome Week shirts. Okay, it's difficult to see them, but there's a close up. See the picture below. Now, it's November, and with finals now over today, the academic year- the school year we thought that would never be- is half way done! Congratulations to our freshmen and all our students for rising to the occasion and finishing strong. On the end of the Fall Semester, Fr. Ralph said, "Congratulations all around to our Gentlemen, and if I could, I would shake their hand. But, as it is, I cannot, and so, I will say, 'Enjoy your break, and don't rush back!'"

What is the word...

Fay: A free man

... in the hallway? Yes, what is the word in the hallway on this the eve of the last day of finals? Well, to be honest, there weren't many words because there were not many people about in the hallways. Maybe they had already finished and had left for hearth and home, or maybe they were studying in one of the lounges or the library. Still, wherever they were and whatever they were doing, they were not in the hallway... well, save one Gentleman, Eoghan Fay. On being spotted and asked what the word was, Fay shared, "After a grueling semester, I am looking forward to taking some time off to rest up away from HERE. I feel rather like Robert Mitchum at the end of 'The Longest Day.'"

The studying continues...

Early birds getting, uh, the ice cream 

... and so does the powering of those studying machines. Yes, great amounts of studying require great amounts of food. Attuned to this requirement, the Hall government stepped in and provided yet another opportunity to power minds studying for finals. With the third day of finals now over and preparing for the penultimate day of testing, study aids appeared in the form of ice cream novelties in the Flounge. Able to choose from a variety of ice cream sandwiches or speciality drumstick cones, the Gentlemen had the opportunity to take a break and enjoy a sweet and cool treat. Don't worry. We're not "icing" our Gentlemen studiers by offering them ice cream novelties. Perish the thought. On putting the spread out for his fellow Gentlemen, Ben Cook, the "cool" 4th floor RA and Californian, said, "Never a brain freeze, only brain power gained from these delectable ice cream novelties!”

Powering...

Simple equation: Chick-Fil-A equals a lot of As

... the minds of scholars is a priority HERE. Who knew that high amounts of studying required large amounts of food? I am certain there is a direct relationship between the two, and after Finals Week is over, I will find an unoccupied math major to prove this for us. But in the meantime, you'll just have to take my word for it. So, as we finish the second day of finals and prepare for the third, study break food reinforcements appeared in the Flounge in the form of Chick-Fil-A sandwiches, both regular and spicy. Individually wrapped and fresh from the store, the sandwiches provided a nice break from the books as well as much needed fuel for the mind. On overseeing the distribution of the late night mind fuel, Peter McKeon, Steds AR, said, "If knowledge is indeed power, then what powers knowledge? Here in St. Ed’s the answer is Chick- Fil-A. I relish the opportunity to provide the fuel that powers the minds of the budding scholars we have in this Hall- especially during finals week. Go Irish, Beat Finals.”

Special...

Rozz to the rescue!

... delivery! Classes are over, and today, Monday, marked the first day of finals. Yes, it's the final push... it's Final Week! After taking a break to watch the Notre Dame vs B.C. game, the Gentlemen are keenly focused on studying, and right now, the most expensive real estate around HERE is a quiet, out of the way, place to study. Wherever it may be found, may our Gentlemen make the most of it! To aid in getting through this week, reinforcements have been mobilized. Thanks to Devon and Rozz Paxson, parents of Steds freshman, Kolton, dropped off fresh Amish cookies for a late night study break in Flounge. On fueling the minds and buoying the spirits of the Gentlemen, Rozz stated, "'The successful warrior is the average man with laser like focus' said Bruce Lee. Wishing ALL of our Gentlemen a successful Finals Week, safe travels home and a wonderful holiday season. Go Irish!"

What is he doing?

Our furry friends are always up to something. So busy are they that some times that they are oblivious to their surroundings, including us. And that is exactly what happened with this squirrel. So busy doing something, whatever it was, he had no clue that he was being filmed and having his fifteen minutes of fame. What was he doing? Who knows. On finally realizing that he was being filmed, this squirrel non-verbaled, "Ah, gotta run... see ya later."

Wait. There's...

A Steds face mask is ALWAYS a stand out

... more! Yes, there is more to tell from the Clemson football weekend. Yes, just when we thought it was all done and over with, the weekend has one more story- one more Steds story- to tell. And how could it not... as it was a game which saw not one but two over times and ended with the number one ranked team being sent home with its first loss. BUT was that the end? No, there was something else. The students storming the field. And in the midst of it all, a Stedsman was spotted. How? Well, let's hear from who spotted him... his mom. On spotting her son, Steve, Angie Sayles, said, "While scouring a photo in The NY Times from the Clemson game, what mom wouldn’t notice a STED’s mask in that crowd? Upon zooming in, not only was it a Steds mask, but it was my son wearing it!"

... to King and Hall. As the Hall’s Freshmen Class representative and avid corn hole player, Colin Kremus is doing his part to stop the Covid, and now, he is encouraging others to do the same. All about the Hall's post boards, even the lobby's glass cabinet, posters featuring the Kremus have gone up reminding Stedsmen to wear their masks. Why? Because if you catch the Covid now, you may be spending Thanksgiving in quarantine and isolation. Worse yet… you may not be able to TASTE the turkey! On the release of the new poster featuring him, Kremus, stated, “Even when I'm not directly involved in some event or initiative, I really just enjoy being a part of the Hall. That's why I'm so glad for having the opportunity to be on one of the Hall's posters, sending an important message in a humorous way.”

Steds Select: One mean and tough football team

... more to last weekend! Yes, there's always more happening at Steds. The more I write of is the testing of the cameras for NBC Sports at the Notre Dame football stadium. Now, you're probably wondering how is this connected to Steds? Simple, the players. Yup, you guessed it. A select group from the Hall got to don Steds football jerseys and play football ON the Notre Dame football field UNDER the lights the stadium while NBC Sports tests and adjust their TV cameras. And this ALL happened on Friday, the day BEFORE the historic win against Clemson. Coincidence? I think not. On this rarest of opportunities, Jon Klein, Steds senior and resident Minnesotan, shared, "A truly special experience that I will remember forever. I can now proudly proclaim that Rudy and I are practically the same person" while fellow senior, Tristan Fross, said, "It was amazing working with the nbc crew. Being able to play the running back position a night before Kyren dominated the field was certainly a once in a life time opportunity."

Manna on wheels: the Weiner Cart

... weekend to remember. It was a weekend where the Notre Dame football team rose to the occasion and delivered not only a win but also a game that will join that pantheon of classic Norte Dame wins. But before we got to Saturday and all its fun, we first had to get through Friday... and thanks to the generosity of donors, something very special arrived, helping everyone get the weekend off on the right foot. Yes, to envy of many North Quad residents, a food truck arrived at St. Ed's. The shock. The surprise. It was like a Christmas morning... all very overwhelming. What couldn't be done was, and it was a sight to be hold. And thanks to assigned time slots, the Gentlemen, in orderly fashion and anti-Covid way, made their selections from the Weiner Cart of bacon jam burgers, bacon wrapped tatter tots, and speciality hot dogs. Still yet, the weather was excellent, making this Friday before Game Day one for the history books. On the arrival of the food truck, Steds freshman, Danny Hughes, said, “The burgers were great, loved the bacon wrapped tater tots. It was a good way to get ready for Friday’s soccer game and support our fellow Stedsman Paddy Burns.” 

Still, Tommy Gallagher, Steds sophomore and resident Hooiser, shared, “Having a food truck before the Clemson game was a sign of good things to come for the weekend. It was a great start to the best weekend we could’ve asked for and certainly gave us the extra fuel to watch the Irish beat the Tigers.”

Finally, Steds juinior, Joe Sweilem, shared, “With the end of the semester coming and flex points dwindling, it was awesome to have some quality grub with plenty of quality people!”

 ... from Notre Dame. Here's a night view of the prairie that is north of Paris House, on the north side of campus over by ND Credit Union building. With the leaves changing colors, the prairie with its dying vegetation, and the moon shining bright through some light clouds, this is the perfect fall night scene. This all looks like something right out of Charlie Brown and the Great Pumpkin! Enjoy your Sunday wherever you may be!
