... from Notre Dame. As the dust, and the pollen too, settles after another week, we would be remiss if we did not say thank you. Thank you to all who helped St. Edward's this ND Day and secure once again first place among the 30 residence halls at Notre Dame. And if you're counting, we're now #1for the ninth year in a row! Still yet, St. Edward's was fourth overall... not too shabby. This is no small feat, and while might try, the Steds Family rallied and carried the day. Many may think we do well on ND Day so that we can be braggarts about campus and lord it over others throughout the year. Perish the thought! It's all done for one thing and one thing only... for the kids! It's always for the kids, and kids love you for it.

Saturday Squirrel.

Ready for a handout

With the weather more seasonable, our furry friends are out and about campus, taking in all that spring has to offer. Recently, one squirrel was seen sunbathing on a campus quadrangle. Most of the time, the squirrels are chasing each other, scrounging about, or looking for a friendly handout. And that's what this squirrel was looking for. Just a moment before this picture was taken, he was digging about, but when the prospect of a handout was a real possibility, everything changed. And as you can see in the picture, he dropped everything and sprang into action. On chasing after a handout, this squirrel non-verbal, "You don't have to ask me twice!"

Big Cats...

A proud Pride: Steds Big Cats...

... are on the prowl. It has been a break out season for the Big Cats with every cat pulling his weight for the Pride. It's true. Every cat is pulling out all the stops on the pitch to ensure the "w" at the end of the match. These cats are playing the beautiful game with advanced technical skill, a focus on fundamentals, kicking, passing, and scoring, and of course, with the reflexes of, well you guessed it, big cats. On the Pride's advancing to the playoffs, co-captain, Michael Lynch divulged, "Shock does not begin to describe my reaction to the legendary Big Cats Playoff win of 2023. On that stormy night, eleven brave Stedsmen took the field against a tough opponent, Stanford. We established possession early, placed beautiful shots on goal, and defended fiercely by attacking the ball. And through perseverance and sure will power, the Cats hammered one into the back of the net to go up 1-0. A beautiful cross set up Dane Storch for a masterclass of a finish. While we have accomplished the unthinkable, we are not done yet. Wednesday, 7pm, Round 2. Hop aboard, the Vengabus is coming."

Follow up. The Big Cats won their game on Wednesday, and now, they play in the semi-finals on Sunday. More to come!

Hale: Smiles and anchor's aweigh!

... anchor! Shirts for THE hall dance of the year, the Steds Yacht Dance, have arrived... and just in time too! With the dance on next Wednesday, the last day of classes at Notre Dame, these shirts will be distributed with just enough time to be worn and make others envious. Designed by senior Luke Bell, the shirt is eye catching and communicates "we're on a boat." Without doubt, it's the hottest shirt of the year. On receiving his last Yacht dance shirt, David Hale, RA and senior, stated, “At first, I was too scared to approach women about going to a dance, but when I started sporting shirts like this, they approached me.”

The numbers tell it all! 

... to all Stedsmen, moms and dads, brothers and sisters, grand and godparents, friends, people of goodwill, Saturday’s squirrels, pets… and anyone else who we are forgetting...THANK YOU for your support this ND Day.

It's true. Some other residence halls and University clubs made a run at Steds, but as the day progressed, they all lost their steam. They just couldn't keep up with Steds!

Because YOU, we are once again the #1 residence hall this ND Day, and if you are counting, this is the NINTH year in a row as #1! 

On St. Ed’s showing this ND Day, I don’t think that words, no matter how witty or eloquent they might be, can capture how grateful we all are. It is truly humbling, and though it might sound trite, all we can say is, “Thank you.” BUT, if pressed, I would have to say, "ND Day shows Steds is loved more than all the rest!"

Indeed, many, many thanks... and all of our love!

Living on hope: Yang

... hoping for this ND Day. ND Day is tomorrow, and the Gentlemen are rallying everyone and anyone to their cause. Why? Because funds raised on ND Day go to make the life of the Hall, well, what it is. Indeed, without ND Day, Steds just wouldn't be Steds. A donation of $10 goes along way here at the oldest and most storied residence hall at Notre Dame, and without any doubt, it helps continue the history to be made and new stories to added to this special place in the shadow of the Dome. But let's hear from the kids what they hope ND Day brings for this upcoming year. On his hopes for ND Day, Jeffery Yang, Sophomore and ND Marching Band member, stated, "I hope in ND Day would bring more options at Ed’s and a new oven/stovetop in Flounge would also be great."

ND Day is very much like Christmas as how well we do on that day determines what and what we cannot do as a Hall. Truth be told, funds raised on ND Day do a great deal for its residents. Storch leading the way!

ND DAY 2023 is happening Tuesday, April 25th, and Wednesday, April 26th, and we need everyone to do his or her duty for Hall and King. Without you, we just can't make Steds go! The laughter, the high jinks, camaraderie and so much more wouldn't happen. It's true! We need you, your family, friends, pets, and anyone else you can think of, to support St. Ed's on next Tuesday and Wednesday... and all it takes is $10! On the importance of ND Day, President Dane Storch said, "This is it… the time for action... the time for solidarity... the time for Steds. Thank you for your support, and we know, everything you do is 'For The Kids!""

The rage...

Stevens (back row, third from left) with Papal Rage

... continues on. The rage isn't letting up as ND's Ultimate Frisbee team, Papal Rage, continues its season. Playing in Huck Finn Tourney in St. Louis, the team faced strong competition as well as strong winds, twenty to forty mph winds. Still, they powered forward and had a successful showing with wins against Emory, Marquette, St Olaf, UC, and Vanderbilt. Helping Papal Rage in its victories has been Splash Blue, a Steds freshman and resident Ohioan, Colin Stevens. Making a splash, Steven has been seen several times in the end zone. Following the Huck Finn tourney, Papal Rage went on to play down state in Indianapolis, where after many wins and securing a third place finish in the tourney, Papal Rage advanced to the Great Lakes Regional. On the team season, Maren Stevens, mother of Colin, shared, "Although Colin and I were not able to attend St Ed's Mom's Weekend on campus, we did have a Mom's weekend near St Louis with the ND Papal Rage Ultimate Frisbee team. When does the date for next year's St Ed's mom's weekend get set?"

Great question. Mom's Weekend 2024 is in the works, and look here next week for an announcement about the Hall's most favorite weekend!

Room picks...

Planning...

... was a week ago today, and like all Room Picks Nights, it was filled with anxiety and excitement, disappointment and joy, and all emotions in between. With the posting of lottery list numbers that determined order of room picking and the maps of available rooms in the Hall seven days before the actual day, the calculations, crafting of plans and contingencies started in earnest, and it all come to an exciting conclusion in the Flounge. Gathering in the Flounge, lottery numbers were called, and then, selections were made in Fr. Ralph's apartment. After a selection was made, Patrick Campbell, like a military drill instructor, yelled out the room number that had been selected, and then, David Hale would mark off the selection on the map with a big "x"... eliciting no response at all or sometimes just the opposite- a great sigh of disappointment. The picking lasted a total of thirty minutes with everyone getting a room in Notre Dame's oldest and most storied hall- the one, the only- St. Edward's. On the evening, Joe Broderick, freshman and Bay Stater, or Massachusettsan, said, "It went well overall. My roommate and I had pretty high lottery numbers, so I think we ended up getting the last room available... But I was pleasantly surprised to learn it was one of the bigger rooms on that floor."

He regrets...

Mr. Carson: Please come back

... his stay wan't longer! It's true. Mr. Carson, the Hall's adopted Hall dog, has left the Hall. Returning to his home just north of campus, Mr. Carson's four day stay at St. Ed's with Fr. Ralph came to an end. His stay with the Gentlemen was brief, but what a time we all had with this King Charles spaniel. When he wasn't napping, Mr. Carson kept a busy schedule being out and about on campus, chasing birds, squirrels, and even Grubhub Starships, or making friends in St. Ed's Park, especially with the ladies. And as the old saying goes, time flies when you're having fun, and Mr. Carson found that out as his stay came to a quick end. On his stay at Notre Dame's oldest and most storied residence hall, Mr. Carson non-verbaled, "I am so sad that I can't muster the energy for a small whimper."

The Easter is...

A whole lot of grilling going on here...

... NOT over. The Octave of Easter, Easter Sunday to the 2nd Sunday, the eight days of Easter is now over, but it ain't over just yet! Easter rolls on, and will continue on for fifty days. Called Eastertide, the Church will celebrate Easter up until Pentecost Sunday or Sunday, May 28th. Like the Church, Steds will celebrate Easter as well not just liturgically but also socially. The celebration started with President Storch hosting an Easter Sunday cookout at Patio St Edward for all those who did not travel for the Easter Break. And as Easter continues on, not only will cookouts be had at the patio but also ice cream socials following Sunday Masses in the Flounge. I tell you, Easter never tasted so good! On the Easter Sunday cookout, Angel Gonzalez Rodriguez, Steds sophomore and resident Californian, declared, "The cookout on Easter Sunday was a great bonding opportunity for those of us who stayed in the Hall over the break. The food was good, but even better was being able to chat with my fellow Stedsmen for a bit while enjoying the lovely weather... and it's Easter! What more could we ask for?!"

Hey there...

While we have had an incredible streak of great weather, some on campus feel, well, left out. With everyone preoccupied with warm temperatures and sunshine, our furry friends feel forgotten. Sadly, everyone has staked out some spot on a quad, laying out, listening to music and collecting a few rays, or enjoying a game frisbee or some other pick up game. As the they do, our squirrels are out and about too, but no one seems to be giving them the proverbial time of day. On being spotted on rock by St. Liam's, this squirrel non-verbaled, "What? A little sunshine and now we don't matter anymore?!"

A great day...

Getting set for fun

... to be in the Park. With a temperature of eighty degrees and pure sunshine, the Stedsmen headed to the Park as President Dane Storch exercised his presidential power by issuing an executive order. With Folgers at Four made outside and refreshments, games, and more on hand, the Stedsmen enjoyed their Park, soaking up the spring weather and strengthening the bonds friendship. Even Mr. Carson made an appearance in the Park to share in the fan. Starting at 2pm, the fun didn't wind down until 8pm. Suffice it to say, it was a grand day. On the day, an unnamed constituent said on the condition of anonymity, "I love President Storch's executive orders."

Long walks? 

... back! Yes, every Stedsmen's favorite dog has returned! Mr. Carson, a King Charles spaniel, is making a visit to the everyone's favorite residence hall, St. Edward's. Staying with Fr. Ralph, Mr. Carson has reignited old friendships as well as taken advantage of everything that St. Ed's and campus have to offer. From roaming the hallways to frolicking in the St. Ed's Park and everything in between, Mr. Carson is living his best life. Why Mr. Carson even made an appearance on In the Red Room. What more could a King Charles spaniel want? But what does Mr. Carson like most about staying at St. Ed's? On this question, Mr. Carson non-verbaled... well... nothing! The picture says it all. Naps in the Red Room!

The quiet before...

Sun and smiles!

... the storm. It's a beautiful, sunny spring day at Notre Dame, causing everyone to find an open space on a quad and soak up some sunshine. But amid the warm temps, sun, and smiles, something is quietly lurking in the minds of every Stedsmen. Indeed, it's lurking about causing a fair amount anxiety as well as excitement. What is it? Room Picks! Tonight is the night when all returning residents of St. Ed's will pick their room for the 2023-2024 academic year. Suffice it to say, there is a good deal of anxiety and excitement, but the good news is, everyone will have a room at the oldest and most storied residence hall at Notre Dame. Taking advantage of the turn in the weather Aidan Ekizian (L) and Colin Davidson (R) invited Olivia (C) to the Park, and from the photo above, it appears as if Ekizian and Davidson don't have a care in the world... or do they? On room picks happening tonight, Davidson shared, "Not sure what’s worse, the chaos of room picks we face tonight or my eight plus hours spent on comp sci homework, but the nice weather makes both a little more manageable, " while Ekizian disclosed, "It was a perfect day in St Ed's Park! Exactly what I needed before a stressful night of room picks.”

But what about Olivia, what is she thinking? On the enjoying the Park, Olivia stated, "While Steds may not have air conditioning like my hall, Welsh Family, St. Ed's does have a nicer front yard. I love Steds!”

The Pride is...

These cats scratch

... on the prowl. Yes, Steds B Team soccer team, Big Cats, has taken to the soccer pitch, looking for w's. While Steds A Team plays in a whole different league, literally and figuratively, Big Cats play with a different skill and a certain finesse that places them in a realm of their own. While the season started with a disappointing loss, the Pride rallied for their second game, holding nothing back. It was a close game, being scoreless throughout the first half as well as much of the second too, until there was a breakthrough. A new cat, freshman Curtis Donovan, stepped up and took a swipe at the ball, drawing a goal and cheers of his fellow Big Cats. Eventually, that one goal secured the win as well as the spirits of the Pride. On scoring the winning goal, Donovan shared, “A firm belief I have always held is that winners win. Being a big cat is the definition of being a winner, so our win was inevitable. I might’ve been the one to put the goal away, but it was the pride as a whole that earned our glorious victory through playing the beautiful game the right way.”

Brother against...

Ryan and Buckendorf: Friends again

... brother. That's what it was on the basketball court during the Bookstore Basketball tourney. With just having dinner together at the celebrated Mom's Weekend, Johnny Ryan C.S.C. '19, former Stedsman and Holy Cross Seminarian, and Jake Buckendorf, Coloradan and Mom's Weekend Commissioner, now faced off against each other on the court. Putting away the formalities and pleasantries, these two Stedsmen held nothing back and in the hopes of advancing in the tourney. In the end, it's like black and white, there can only be one winner. Sadly, Ballers with Collars went down against a younger, more agile Steds team. On losing Ryan stated, "A gentleman never likes to lose, but if he must lose, he prefers to lose to another gentleman."

Justing hanging around

While our furry friends usually get all the attention, it appears that another campus neighbor wanted some attention too. Spotted in St. Edward's Park, this raccoon climbed the sugar maple tree in front of St. Ed's. What was he doing? Trying to pass himself off as squirrel? Looking for a squirrel's store of nuts? On being spotted climbing a tree by Colin McKechney, senior and New Yorker, this raccoon non-verbaled, "Though it may be a little cold, the sun makes all the difference.”

This one...

Catch and Release: Campbell

... didn't get away. Taking some rest and relaxation from building bridges, Patrick Campbell, senior and outdoorsman, took reel and rod and headed not to the lakes of Notre Dame but rather to the St. Jospeh's River. With its headwaters in central Michigan, the St. Jospeh's River meanders through Michigan and Indiana, taking many turns with the most famous one at, well, you guessed it, South Bend. Campbell, an avid outdoorsman, found a the perfect place to cast and patiently waited to see what would bite. He did have to wait long as a steelhead trout took his bait and gave a fantastic chase. In the end, Campbell won. On his catch, Campbell shared, “A steelhead with all this beauty and size could only come from the great state of Indiana, and from none other than St. Joseph’s River. The catch, as some could rival with one of those on the show, River Monsters. It's a big catch, and without doubt, it's an Indianan trophy. It feels great to be a Hoosier."

But is Jack happy or sad?!

... real. Roompicks are coming up. Everyone's forget time of the year... selection a new room for next semester. Suddenly, almost magically the lobby and Flounge have been the most important rooms in the Hall. Why? Well, because the Room Picks' Lottery List is posted in the lobby with the Floor Maps, maps of available rooms, posted in the Flounge. These maps with various colored dots tell Stedsmen which rooms are open for selection at next Tuesday's Room Picks as well as which ones have been reserved for incoming freshmen. And you guessed it, the lottery list determines the order of selecting room. Indeed, with the postings there were tears of joy and sighs of sorrow as dreams and plans either came one step closer to becoming a reality or well, falling through. On the posting of maps, Luke Denn said, "The Room Maps and Lottery List are in! Everyone is exited because this means the next chapter in their Notre dame experience…rooming with a friend. I wouldn’t say disappointment is a term used at this time because it’s the friendships that matter, not the room."

The Games...

The Hall Olympic torch: Burning brightly...

... are over. With little fanfare, the Hall Olympics of Steds came to close. Perhaps it was the sting of defeat, evaporated interest, or the prospect of failing an exam if studying didn't happen soon that caused the games end in a whimper. Still, if you were the winners of the games, then it was a different story, and that was the case for our seniors. Winning 1st place by demonstrating prowess, dedication, and sheer determination to win, Steds seniors took the glory and then some from the Hall Olympiad. Following the seniors were the freshmen in second with third place, a tie, going to sophomores and juniors. On winning the games, senior Matt Verdeschi stated, "Much like the Avengers have a hulk too... we have a Nick Haggestad!"

Mr. & Mrs. Frank and Ivette Spesia

... they're married! No Fooling! With Fr. Ralph witnessing and with fellow Stedsmen present, Ivette Ferrerras and Frank Spesia ’09 were married at St. Adalbert’s in South Bend, Indiana on April 1st. It was a day marked by rain, snow, and sleet, but that couldn’t put a damper on the day nor the couple. The the couple radiated excitement and joy, warming the hearts of all present. On Ivette becoming a part of the Steds family, Dan Meehan said, “As an entire decade of Stedsman classes would (likely) agree, we love Frank, but maybe we don't need to hear about niche Van Morrison live albums for 3 hours. So, with Ivette joining the family, it has given us all a reason to rejoice, and a reason to still want to hang out with Frank."

A new week at ND

... Moms. After an amazing weekend of feting moms and all the women in our lives, well, it's time for a break. But there is no rest for the weary. It's Monday, and time to learn! Suffice it to say, the week is off to a slow start here at St. Edward's. Congratulations to Jake Buckendorf for planning a weekend that will not be soon forgotten, and good luck to our new commissioner, Gavin Cullinen. Thank you to all moms, grandmas, sisters, and aunts who attended, and to those who were not here, you're were missed. On the weekend, a freshman resident speaking on the condition of anonymity shared, "Note to self, after a weekend like Mom's Weekend, no more classes at 8:20 on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday!"
