Where are they...

Moran enjoying than just a view

… now? During his recent visit to Seattle, the Captain (of Steds baseball) and former Steds RA, P.J. Moran '13, enjoyed both a view and a taste of Mt. Rainier from the top of the Space Needle. Thankfully for Moran, it was a great sunny day, and if you look closely at the photo, you can Rainier not just in the foreground but also the background. When questioned by fellow Steds RA and current Seattleite, James Yurkovich '13, about his impression of the view from the Needle, the Captain replied, “The view isn't quite what it is from the 4th floor of St. Ed's, but it'll do."

Saturday Squirrel.

Inspecting the goods

Our furry friends are curious. Last semester, this squirrel stopped scrounging around in the Steds patio trash can and strolled over to the parking to see what was happening. What was happening was the loading of the car with the supplies for a study break. Unfazed by all the commotion, this squirrel sat and watched, and at one point, he even climbed onto the cart. On inspecting the cart laden with study break supplies, this squirrel non-verbaled, "Oh. I am touched, but you shouldn't have."

That other football...

Liverpool's power fans: Debbie, Alyssa Lyons, Brandon, Connor, and Gavin Ryan...

... comes to Notre Dame. Yes, that other football that they play in Europe made an appearance at the ND football stadium last week as Liverpool from the English Premier League took on Borussia Dortmund from the German Bundesliga in what is called a preseason friendly, meaning I think, that they were playing for fun and not for keeps. Still, it was quite the feat to have two "top flight" soccer teams play at the Notre Dame stadium, and what is even more amazing is that is was a packed stadium! In the crowd was a Steds family- the Ryans. Watching the game, they saw their Liverpool quad go down against Dortmund as they were bested by a score of 3 to 2. On the defeat, Connor Ryan '13 said, “Though my team lost, I’m always game for a quality footy match. Good on ya!”

Still yet, Gavin Ryan said, "The fans in Notre Dame Stadium were clad overwhelmingly in red, and  in THIS case, it was a good thing," and he went on to further say, "Touchdown Jesus” overnight became 'Red Card Jesus.'" Finally, Gavin concluded his remarks with, "Absent a marching band, the Liverpool fans were forced to sing during the entire match.”

Brandon Ryan '18, who birthday it was yesterday, thought that a win was an early gift; however, the loss was anything but that. Pulling it together, Brandon said, "It was a joy to see two distinct affiliations of mine come together in such a spectacular way. The champions came fresh from their summer vacations ready to show us Yanks how it's done, but alas, between respectable competition and the sweltering heat, it was not the result us, the Liverpool faithful, were hoping for. Still, what a joy it always is to return to South Bend in the name of sport... even its its just to see a few Scouser have a kick."

... Jesus with a red penalty card...

... as the stadium is awash in red.

Where are they...

Scott with his trophies

... now? On his way back from Ireland, Chris Scott '18 stopped off in Nuuk, Greenland for a little rest and relaxation. What does one do in Greenland beside enjoy the green and ice of the countryside? Apparently, you fish. So braving the cold waters of the Labrador Sea, Scott went fishing and had success as he caught not one but two fish.  On Scott catching two fish in Greenland, Fr. Ralph said, "Show off."

Your Sunday Picture...

An odd view indeed

... from Notre Dame. While this sight was seen earlier this week, it continues to vex those who walk through the Park. Something is amiss. Something beloved is missing. Something that brings stability and comfort is absent. It's all very much like the Dome not being lit up at night. For the peace and comfort, may our patron return to post quickly! Enjoy your Sunday wherever you may be!

Somebody is getting...

Asking the big question...

... married. Yes, Jon Carr '18 recently proposed to Emily Hunt, and once again, thankfully, she said yes. And  there’s a photo to prove it! Like Jon, Emily is from the Old Line State, as known as the Free State, still yet know as the Chesapeake State, or simply referred to as Maryland, and they met during their high school days. So, this day was long coming. On the engagement Carr said, “I am so excited to have Emily as the newest member of Steds family!" Indeed, Jon… indeed. We couldn’t agree with you more!

Best wishes and congratulations to Emily and Jon.

... and she said yes!

Somebody is getting...

Brandon and Ariel

... married. Yes, Brandon Ruggles '17 recently proposed to Ariel Durgana, and thankfully, she said yes. Ariel, of Long Island, is a Boston College grad and met Ruggles in Washington D.C. Before you knew it, they were engaged. On the engagement to a B.C. grad, Fr. Ralph said, "When BC meets ND, BC is ALWAYS the loser... but not here!"

Best wishes and congratulations to Ariel and Brandon.

An update...

Baby Kade doing his duty for King and Hall!

... on the St. Edward statue. Simply put, there is no update. Surprisingly, there is no estimated time of return for our beloved patron to his perch in St. Edward's Park, but that isn't stopping some from taking advantage of his absence. Much like the residents who pushed the proverbial envelope when the rector was away from the Hall so too are they now with the patron's absence. While out for repair, Jay Williams ‘12 hoisted his two month year old son James "Kade" Williams IV to man the post. When asked for comment, Baby Kade said, "Somebody has to watch the Park while St. Ed is away. Last thing we need is someone tripping over a rogue root or over some uneven sidewalk. Plus, this photo will look great on the front cover of my ND application one day. If I get placed anywhere but St. Ed’s, there’ll be hell to pay!"

Well said Baby Kade... well said indeed!

Saturday Squirrel.

Diving for dinner

With students gone, it is slim pickings for our furry friends who now have to forge in whatever might have a tasty tid bit or two. Yes, this means that the squirrels are not above doing a bit of trash diving, and that is exactly what this squirrel was doing in the backyard of St. Edward's When asked what discarded treasures were found, this squirrel non-verbaled, "It's all mine... back off!"

Romania Calling...

Chris, in the red sweatshirt, at the Prince's house

Chris Lattimer, Sted's Senior and architecture major, was recently at Prince Charles' house. No, not the one in England...the one in Romania. While the Prince may not have been there, Chris was, learning about traditional building practices of the area as well as historical preservation techniques. These techniques were quickly put to use in the repair of a 13th century fortified church wall. On being in Romania, Chris said, "While in Romania, I was not only introduced to the traditional architecture of the area but also experienced the traditional culture and lifestyle of a remote Romanian village. You know what they say...'When in Romania!'" Indeed, and...

...Happy Birthday Chris!

Saturday Squirrel.

Two clowns in a tree

Our furry friends are everywhere, but these two, found at the Grotto, seemed a bit confused. Yes, confused as they did not know if they were going up and in or going down and out. Confusion if we ever saw it. On this predicament, one squirrel non-verballed, "This is just plain nuts."

California Calling.

The beautiful Mission San Carlos Borromeo

Sted's Rector, Fr. Ralph Haag, CSC, is getting a little down time in California, enjoying the sun and surf. When asked about of his recent visit to the Mission Church of San Borromeo in Carmel, Haag said, "I thought that they said, ‘Do you want a caramel?’ I replied, ‘It’s a little early, but okay...why not?’ Two hours later I was at a church.”
