And then...

Exit, stage right: Campus Lodges

... they were gone. They were HERE, but sadly, they are now not HERE. The lodges, or crystal palaces as they were often referred to, on North and South Quads, which hosted students to a "lodge like" atmosphere complete with moose heads, have been dismantled and taken away. With warming temps and sunshine galore, the lodges were like the local Ruby Tuesday's with immediate seating, or completely empty. Plagued by low attendance throughout their time on campus, the lodges never became THE place to be or be seen, but nevertheless, they did help. Now, all that reminds students of their presence are the bright yellow discolorations in the green grass, perhaps demarcating where the "lodge like atmosphere overflow" leaked out onto the quads. Whatever may be the reason, may their memory be a blessing. On the lodges, Peter McKeon, Steds AR, eloquently opined, "In my young life I’ve had few occasions of true grief. Hence, with the departure of our quad lodges I find myself in foreign emotional territory. I have to assume this is what parents feel when they become empty nesters. But, we all must put on a brave face and accept that our crystal palaces are moving to a better place. Don’t cry because it’s over; smile because it happened.”

Our big...

Doctor of Style: Dr. Sonn

... breakout! Steds has worked hard to get its branding right. It's taken years, but thanks to work of many over the year, like John Wetzel and more recently Kyle Rubin, coupled with that of Brendan Moriarty, the Steds brand has been refined and been able to reach out beyond its old and storied hallways. Evidence of this was recently received  when Dr. Kevin Sonn '09, Stedsman and native Washingtonian, was spotted exiting the NCAA game that Gonzaga taken down Creighton in the Round of 16. While he bleeds gold and blue, Sonn was pulling for his home state favorite while wearing his stylish and couture Steds face mask. A face mask for all seasons and all occasions, Sonn helped the Steds brand break into TV markets across the country as he was interviewed following the game. On his achievement, Dr. Sonn said, "While we all know Steds has become a global brand, it doesn’t hurt to reinforce our reach domestically from time to time.”

Fight...

Ring side seats in the Flounge

... night in the Flounge! With many Stedsmen interested in the recent Miocic vs Ngannou UFC fight, a group gathered in the Flounge to see these two heavyweights battle it out in the ring. But there was more... how can you watch a sporting event without food? So, Raising Cane's was brought in placate the Gentlemen... less they started raising Cane. With food and friends- a good fight to watch- what more could you ask for during a pandemic? In the end, Ngannou won, but honesty, the Stedsmen really won that night. On watching the fight, Vince DiFilippo shared, "I came for the Cane’s chicken and stayed for the company. It was great to see a new heavyweight champion of the world rise to glory!" while fellow sophomore Michael Hendrikson said, "The fights were great, but what was most entertaining was a discussion among Stedsmen on how Will Dieterich could make 1% of his bodyweight nachos."

Finally, Ben Poag, Steds sophomore and resident St. Louisan, said, "Nothing brings Stedsmen together more than tattooed guys slinging haymakers and spirited conversation about nachos and competitive eating."

Saturday Flowers...

... brought to you by Saturday Squirrel. Even though we take a break from our furry friends to show you a variety of spring time flowers that are now blooming about campus, the lakes, and wooded areas, we really are indebted to our furry friends. Why? You see, the squirrels dig up the bulbs for food in the fall, burying it here and there, but they never remember where they put it. Well, in spring see a colorful reminder of what they missed! Enjoy these flowers... and thank you squirrels.

We need...

Pretty puddles

... the rain. With on and off again rain forecasted this weekend, any precipitation, except snow, is most welcomed. It's really been dry, and a good rain will only help campus burst into various shades of green and increase the spring flowers which have already begun to flower. While many would consider the rain an inconvenience, the showers do provide for a unique beauty... you just have to have an eye to see it. During a recent afternoon shower, puddles outside St. Ed's captured a unique view of the Dome. On the sight, Fr. Ralph said, "Beauty is everywhere HERE."

We have...

We have a winner: Lynch

... a winner! After some confusion on par with the Oscars fiasco a few years back, Student Government's Judicial Council recounted the votes cast in yesterday's Hall's election. Initially, calling for a run off in the Steds presidential race, Judicial Council made a u-turn late Thursday night and declared a winner... Michael Lynch. A complete surprise. In other races, Student Union Representative was won by Robert Cline, but in the Hall senator race a run off will election will be held tomorrow with Mike Jekot and Dan McGuire facing off. Congratulations to our new president-elect and SUB rep, and thanks to everyone who ran in the election, giving the Steds electorate a choice. On the presidential election results, current Hall president, Peter Nichols, said, "Although my term is coming to an end, I was excited for the results of the contested Steds election. All candidates ran great campaigns as to be expected from the Gentlemen! Although, in a dramatic recount, there could only be one victor. Congratulations to Michael Lynch to being the next  St. Eds president!"

On winning the presidential election, President-elected Lynch shared, "I am honored to lead this great Hall next year and its Gentlemen. We are committed to the Steds community and look forward to keeping the traditions alive. We have many great ideas for Steds, the first being in-house elections. For Hall and King!"

Wednesday, March 24, 2021

And now...

A winner or loser: Stay tuned

... they wait. With the electronic polls now closed, candidates in the Steds Hall election are now playing a waiting game as votes are tallied from today's election. The election, conducted by electronic voting, saw Stedsmen go to their computers to vote for three positions, Hall president, senator and student union board representative. Those elected tonight will take their oaths to uphold the Student Activities constitution and afterwards assume their various offices ALL before the end of the semester. After all the speeches, handshaking, promises, and pontificating, our candidates are waiting for Student Activities version of "Deep Blue" to tabulate the results. On waiting, Michael Lynch, Steds sophomore and candidate for Hall President, said, "The delays of counting electronic votes will alway baffles me. However, democracy is worth the wait."

What are they...

Avocados coming soon

... doing during the pandemic? Yes, what are the Gentlemen doing with their spare time? Great question. The answer is a lot of things. Some are reading more. Others are exercising more. Still yet, others are engaging in other constructive pursuits. One of those "other constructive pursuits" is gardening, and that's what Dan Rahill IV '09 is doing in sunny San Diego. When he's not work Zooming, Rahill is outside in garden, soaking up the Californian sun and ocean breezes AND tending to his newly planted avocado tree! Even though he has long had an interest in gardening, this is Rahill's first venture into avocado trees... and with all the sun, it just seemed like the perfect thing to do. On planting his first avocado tree, Rahill said, "I hope will have some avocados soon, but I am not holding my breath."

Day Four...

Our Steds Runners...

... and the conclusions to the games of the Third Olympiad. With the point totals level, the final competition really would determine who would walk away with Olympic glory and the coveted recognition of being the oldest residence hall on campus. With so much hanging in the balance, the Stedsmen kept calm and focused on the what was between them and the prize... the track competition. With minds, palettes, and spelling prowess all tested, it was now time to have their endurance tried, and what better to do that than through a medley of distance relays.

At the Holy Cross College track, Steds Olympian hopefuls, in two teams of four, competed in 400, 800, 1200, and 1600 meter races. The Stedsmen ran like they never ran before, and suddenly, BOTH Steds teams lapped the Sorin A team, their best team. Sorin clearly ran out of gas, and with that, Steds overtook them and never looked back. In the end, Sorin conceded, giving praise where it was due, and Steds came home victors, securing a victory for Hall and King and the recognition we all know is true... Steds IS the oldest residence hall on campus. On his running the race for his hall, Stedsman and resident Ohioan, Ben Theis, said, "If you think about it, Sorin has just been racing to catch up to Steds ever since it was founded... So they were in a familiar position Friday when both of our Steds teams beat them on every leg of the relay. It was a flawless team performance, and we couldn’t have done it without the great support we had out there!"

Still yet, an elated Fr. Ralph shared, "Without a doubt, these men of Steds weren’t running away from something as much as they were running towards something... glory and the prize of victory! For the kids!"

WINNERS: STEDS!!!

Saturday's Squirrel.

It was someone else...

Some times you're at the right spot at the right time. That was certainly the case this morning walking by the Notre Dame Hammes Bookstore near the gate. On the sidewalk was a mess of some thing, and lo and behold, the mess maker was there. Yes, a furry friend went nuts on his take out food and apparently couldn't wait to enjoy it in the comfort of his nest. On being caught making a mess on the sidewalk, this squirrel non-verbaled, "I didn't do it."

The momentum...

High Noon with Walsh: Come out and spell!

... did not last long. On day four of the Third Olympiad saw a most unique competition make an appearance- spelling bee. Yes, everyone's favorite, spelling bee, pitted Stedsmen Danny Hincka, Hayden Mascarenhas, Jake Smith, Nick Haggestad, Eoghan Fay, and Nico Dinglasa against several Sorinites. Actually, the Stedsmen had to encourage the Sorinites to come out and spell, and one brave Gentleman, Jared Walsh, Steds junior and resident Illinoian, took matters into his own hands (see above). Eventually, the Sorinites were coaxed out of their hall. Facing off in front of Sorin- but not on the grass of God Quad- our spellers spelled away. Dinglasa was an early and surprise casualty, and eventually, one Steds speller was left... Smith. Yes, after TEN ROUNDS, it was all up to Smith. He could bring home the "W" or, well, the big "L." Smith's word? Connoisseur... which Smith misspelled. On the spelling bee lost, Vice President Brendan Moriarty said, "What can I say, but Sorin had some good spellers," but Fr. Ralph was defiant in the loss stating, "Connoisseur? What language is that? It's not American!"

Day Three.

Can take the heat: Mitchell, McGuire and Hincka

The games of the Third Olympiad, pitting Sorin against St. Edward's, entered the halfway point. What's at stake? A lot of "W's" for sure, but also the coveted recognition of being the oldest hall at Notre Dame. With points totals even, the third day of competition would have one hall take a clear lead, perhaps giving momentum to finish strong. And what was the competition? A ghost pepper challenge. What is a ghost pepper you might ask? Well, according to Wikipedia, a ghost pepper is an interspecific hybrid chili pepper cultivated in Northeast India. In 2007, Guinness World Records certified that the ghost pepper was the world's hottest chili pepper.

So, with ghost peppers in front of them as well as quarts of milk, three Sorinites and three Gentlemen faced off against each other at Plaza St. Edward- Steds backyard patio. And if you thought Atlas had it bad with the weight of the world on his shoulders, well, these three brave Stedsmen had it far worse with the weight of the all hopes, dreams, aspirations, expectations, and so much more of Steds on their shoulders! Unbelievable pressure indeed!

Representing Steds were a pair of freshmen, Michael Mitchell and Dan McGuire, and a sophomore, Danny Hincka, and as the competition progressed, Steds took an early lead as a Sorinite reached for milk after biting his ghost pepper. Then, in the second round, the same thing occurred. The Sorinite grabbed his quart of milk and tagged out. Yup, you guessed it. The same thing happened with the third Sorinite. In the end, it was a complete and decisive win for Steds... a "W" and the momentum. On his win, McGuire said, "A hell of a team effort for an absolutely hot sweep!"

The games...

Mr. Double U: Westin Mulqueen

… continue! While the Gentlemen are still smarting from Monday’s loss at Sorin in the orange juice chugging competition, they have not succumbed to it. If anything, yesterday’s loss has strengthen their resolve to bring home a “W.” And so, it fell to those Gentlemen participating in the trivia competition to bring it home. With teams assembled and spirits running high, Steds threw everything they had at Sorin, and in the end, Steds walked away with the coveted “W” thanks to "Mr. W" himself… Westen Mulqueen. Ironic? No, destiny! On his triumph in trivia, Mulqueen said, “Due to my vast love of both Megamind and Shrek, two of the heavily questioned movies tonight, I was humbly able to bring back a win for the Men of St. Edwards Hall! I feel very optimistic about team morale heading into the challenges later this week. We got this.”

BUT THERE'S MORE...

Today's a special day... St. Patrick's Day! Apparently, a leprechaun entered the Hall and left the Gentlemen a special treat to mark the day. Suffice it to say, ND Irish eyes were smiling. On the treat, Fr. Ralph said, "They may not like green eggs and green ham, but I bet they will like these green treats! I know I do!"

Green never looked so good...

Let the games...

Dieterich: Next year's champion

... of the Third Olympiad begin! The inter-hall games, with Sorin competing against Steds for the title of "oldest hall," started Monday. Dispensing with the opening ceremonies for pandemic reasons, the two residence halls got right down to business and to the first game... orange juice drinking or rather chugging.  Representing Steds was sophomore and resident man from Maine, Will Dieterich. Perhaps he trained with Sunny D and not orange juice or maybe it was the fact that he was in the unfamiliar surroundings of that other hall but whatever it was, Dieterich was taken down in  the contest. While a devastating blow to young Dieterich’s ego, and a set back to the Hall in its pursuit of gold,  President Nichols assures everyone that there are many more games to be had! Still, a very special thanks to Dieterich for stepping forward for Hall and King… and the win. Next time for sure!

On his performance, Dieterich shared, “Without a doubt, I let the boys down, but I’m ready to start training again. Only 364 days until next year’s OJ chugging contest!”

It's Steds...

All around winners: Stedsmen

... Field Day! With the Covid rules easing up, especially with events outside, Steds Hall Government and seniors took advantage of the beautiful weather to host the first ever Steds Pandemic Field Day at Ricci Fields. The turnout was great. With Chick-Fil-A sandwiches, sun, and a variety of sports to played (no skill required), it was the proverbial win-win for every Gentlemen. After various sports were played, the day culminated in a "Derby friendly" where the two Steds soccer teams faced off against each other in anticipation of the upcoming Derby Day yet to come. Steds A team faced off against Steds B team, or Big Cats, and it was quite a show of talent... on both sides. Who won? Steds won! On organizing and participating in the Field Day, Ben Merrick, Steds Senior, said, "I had never seen so much athleticism in one event! The men of St. Ed’s took Ricci fields by storm as we enjoyed the beautiful weather, a myriad of sport, and the brotherhood of the Hall during these troubling times."

Saturday Squirrel.

Can you see them...

With our furry friends taking a break, we have some other friends who wanted to make an appearance. Sometimes, as you walk about campus, you suddenly realize you are being watched... not just by squirrels... but by others. Who are these others? The deer. North of the walnut grove, by the old Douglas Road, there is a wooded area where one early morning as the fog was lifting, I noticed a deer looking straight at me. How long had this deer been watching me I know not, but what I came to realize was that there were more deer... a lot more... watching me. On being spotted, this deer non-verbaled, "This is awkward."

It's a shout out...

An instagram post....

... about the shout out. We would like to draw your attention to the shout out given to Steds by Nothing But Nets for the recent Mullets Against Malaria campaign. It's more than just a shout out about guys hating malaria.... it's shout out about guys hating malaria and you hating malaria too! And the amazing thing is twenty thousand George Washingtons are backing up that shout out! And in 80's speak, "that's a bodacious amount of money and nets." Take that malaria! On seeing the shout out, Peter Nichols, President and veteran in the recent war, shared, "It was a nice surprise to see that Nothing But Nets thanked us for our  Mullets Against Malaria campaign. We could not have raised this much without the entire Steds world behind us. But this shout out is really for all of us, those at the front and homefront. It's truly amazing what OUR hair and YOUR generosity has accomplished. Now... and always... for the kids!"

He's done...

Rubin: Spring apparel is a go!

... it again. Yes, the Hall apparel commissioner, Kyle Rubin, has done it again. Unveiling his spring collection, Rubin has delivered his fellow Stedsmen a breath taking line up, capturing not only the sophisticate but also the active lifestyle of his fellow Gentlemen. In short, the collection can only be described as a triumph, leaving, no lie, Student Activities approvers speechless and other hall rectors wondering if their apparel line will evoke such emotion and envy. If only! Once again, the oldest and most storied residence hall is leading the way with others following in its wake... the same good old story since 1882! On how he does it, Rubin, soon-to-be chemist and apparel design genius, shared, "The first thing I ask myself when designing apparel is 'Would I wear that,' and if the answer is no, then it's not good enough for the other members of St. Ed's. Everything after that kinda falls into place until I get the perfect design. Other than that, the design process involves a lot of social media usage and FIFA grinding."

Front row...

Raising Cane: literally an figuratively

... seats in the Flounge! The Gentlemen had front row seats in the Flounge to the big UFC fight this past Saturday as Blachowicz faced off against Adesnaya. At the suggestion of sophomores, the fight on ESPN+ was purchased as well as Raising Cane delivered, to give the Gentlemen on a Saturday night distraction. Regardless if one like UFC or not, everyone liked the chicken tenders... a new Steds staple. On the Saturday evening distraction, Alec Paz, sophomore and UFC aficionado, shared, "The chicken was good, and the fights were cool." Still, Nate McKeon, Steds AR and Raising Cane aficionado, said, "The UFC octagon was not the only thing packing a punch that night - endless servings of Raising Cane’s chicken tenders kept the St. Ed’s viewing party well fed throughout the fights. With enough flavor to last well past the final round, these crispy golden pieces of poultry took home the real belt!"

Breaking news...

In all its glory: the witch hazel bush

... from Notre Dame. The witch hazel bush outside of LaFortune is in bloom. You may be wondering why this is breaking news. Well, even though astrological spring will occur on March 20th at 5:37am, metrological spring already happened on March 1st. It would appear that the witch hazel bush agrees with metrological spring that spring has sprung. The witch hazel is the first to bloom on campus, and when you see the red flowers, spring is here. Okay, at least the leading edge of spring has arrived, but sustain warm temps are yet to arrive. One person who monitors the proximity of spring by the witch hazel bush is Fr. Terry Ehrman, CSC, theologian and botanist. On the blooming witch hazel, Fr. Ehrman said, "The harbinger of spring seemed to be asleep but wonderfully arrived in regal red splendor to announce a hopeful message of vernal nearness.

Remembering...

Pal (R): Instilling courage and bravery to all

... all our boys! Again, some of our boys were delayed in heading off to front for one reason or another. Still, their hatred for malaria and love for the kids has motivated them to nevertheless head off to front and do their duty to Hall and King. One such brave young Gentleman is freshman and resident Californian, Jonathan Pal. But don’t let Pal’s easy going, laid back Californian vibe fool you. This guy is anything but that when comes to fighting malaria.  Matter of fact, when you could, he jumped at the first opportunity to get his mullet and join his fellow Gentlemen at the front lines. On his receiving his mullet, Pal said, “I’ve been anticipating this moment all weekend.  I watched the live stream and saw everyone’s mullets, and once I got back on Friday, I gained a true appreciation of the beauty of the mullet. Glad to join the mullet crew, and glad to see that we have far exceeded our fundraising goal! For the kids!”

On Pal's mullet, Fr. Ralph shared, "His zeal for the cause and audacity in this fight has only strengthen my resolve to keep my mullet until ALL our boys come home! For the kids!"

Saturday's squirrel.

Hey, I am talking to you!

Sometimes you get a feeling you're being watched, and suddenly, it's confirmed. You then hear a squeaking noise coming from somewhere, and you're immediately put you on guard as you try to zero in on it. That was exactly what happened when walking west on South Quad by the Riley Art Building. A loud squeaking noise was heard, but looking around, nothing could be found. It was only when turning "back and to the left" could the vocal, furry friend be spotted. Up in his pine tree perch, this squirrel had zeroed in on a passerby below, and with a swishing of his tail and incessant squeaking, his presence could not to go unnoticed. On making eye contact with his squirrel, he non-verbaled, "Stay off the grass!"

Friday, March 5, 2021

What's all that...

Our new neighbor: Remick Hall

... noise about? Yes, there was been a lot of noise about Steds these days. Interestingly enough, it's not coming from the Gentlemen. Thoughts immediately turn to Zahm. But no. It's not Zahm. Who then? Well, it's the construction workers who are building the new Remick Hall directly to west of Steds. Replacing the old "Sorinville," a series of buildings built by Sorin that over the years had become dilapidated and eventually were condemned for a number of years, Remick Hall will certainly add curb appeal to both the Main Building and Steds. But there's a price for that curb appeal and enjoying sight views of the Dome, noise.

Unfortunately, from early morning to late afternoon, a steady buzz of noise is coming from the construction site, but there's hope for the Gentlemen, especially those living on the westside of the Hall. Construction is nearly over! On the noise, Henry Bergstrom, Steds junior and native Minnesotan, stated, "Normally, when someone wakes up on a peaceful South Bend morning, they expect the soft chirping of birds or the calm rustling of leaves in a breeze. That has not been our reality for the last two years. The construction going on across Sorin Circle has caused me to hear more jackhammer and crane noises than I ever thought I would in the past two years. Hopefully the building turns out well. Not only did we have to hear but we also have to see it... a lot."

That's...

Steds Gentlemen: Students during the day...

... amore! With things returning to normal at Steds after the a had fought Mullets campaign, the Gentlemen are back to their various and sundry pursuits. One such pursuit is cooking. With campus' favorite hall eatry, Ed's, closed to due to the pandemic, the Stedsmen have been able to use the Ed's kitchen for personal cooking. And what are they cooking? Well, whatever they want... but NO flambé anything! Earlier this week, a savory and inviting aroma wafted down the first floor hallway. Upon investigating, it was clear that an Italian night was in the works as Nicky Haskell, Peter Ferraro, and Cullen Geahigan were chopping, dicing, and simmering away.

While Geahigan was cooking lasagna, the two sophomores were up to something else. What was it? Well, let's hear from the chefs themselves. On his cooking, Haskell said, “With midterm exams around the corner, Peter and I made it a point to slow down and take the time to make a home cooked meal. Both of us miss our family’s Italian cooking, so we decided to make penne with red sauce and some garlic bread. This Tuesday, we are excited to spend our mini break going to the Italian market and cooking a full feast.”

Still, his fellow sophomore, Ferraro shared, "Cooking in my family has always been a way to destress and spend quality time with one another, so what better way to spend our “spring break” than cooking a homemade Italian feast! Today, Nicky and I went to the local Italian market and found some great ingredients to make a Caprese Salad, some penne pasta, and chicken cutlets. After nearly two hours of cooking, we were finally able to enjoy our meal in our dorm room along with the fantastic view of the Golden Dome."

How did they fare? You be the judge!

... and chefs at night!
