Heron'ing around: the green heron 

Our furry friends are once again on hiatus, and as they do whatever it is they do, we have the opportunity to turn our attention to another campus neighbor. We're all familiar with the blue herons on campus. Beautiful and large, blue herons are easy to spot. But have you ever seen a green heron? Yes, there's a green heron, and if you are at the right spot, at the right time, you'll spot. Substantial smaller, green with grey wings, the green heron, Butorides virescens, are very similar to their larger cousins, blue herons, hunting the same prey, in the same manner, as well as in the same locations. On being spotted at St. Mary's Lake early in the morning, this green heron non-verbaled, "Excuse me, but do you know where the fish, the small fish, are?"

What's the word...

The talkative Zach Jones

... in the Steds hallway? Yes, what is the word in the hallway on this Friday, the last day of third week of classes and the eve of the away home football game against Perdue? Yes, what is the word after that surprise defeat against NIU that all ND fans are smarting from? Well, Zach Jones, Steds freshman and resident Texan, was willing to share what he was hearing. On being spotted and asked what the word was about this weekend's game, Jones shared, "A win of course. I think the offense will bounce back from a poor showing last week, and Riley Leonard will throw for two touchdowns. The defense will hold Purdue to seven points, and Notre Dame will win 24-7."

Conal and Maggie Fagan are...

... married! Conal Fagan ’21 and Maggie Arriola ’17 were married in Derry, Ireland at St. Eugene’s Cathedral, making a most beautiful day even more beautiful. Indeed, the sun was actually out and shining on this very special day!!! With Fr. Gary Chamberland, CSC officiating and Fr. Ralph there in spirit, surrounded by their families and friends, Maggie and Conal exchanged theirs vows with loud and clear voices, big smiles, and great emotion and exuberance. On the wedding, Josh Chapple, Stedsman and best man, shared, “It was truly a joyous occasion for everyone’s favorite wee leprechaun! Sláinte to the happy couple!”

Cook (in Steds swatshirt): At the center of the storm...

... open! Last night, with great fanfare and excitement, the Stedsmen said hello to an old friend... Ed's! Yes, everyone's favorite hall eatery has once again opened its doors, serving up late night goodness in the form of paninis, milkshakes, smoothies, pizza sticks, and much more. Yes, all those things that young scholars need to fuel night studying are back again. Thanks to Ed's, straight As are right around the corner! And the Hall has many persons to thank... namely the Steds workers, our beloved culinary sales representatives.

On opening Ed’s and serving late night goodness, John Cook, resident Californian and Texan and veteran Ed’s employee, shared, “On top of working opening night for Ed’s in the kitchen, I had the honor of making the paninis this year as well. Opening night was a huge success as we sold out all but 4 of the paninis I had just made that afternoon. The biggest success of the night, however, was not the number of sales in Ed’s, but the number of smiles. I am looking forward to working in the kitchen with the best Ed’s staff we’ve had in years.”

They got married!

Mary and Chris McKeon...

It's official! They got married! Chris McKeon ’14 and Mary Heldridge were married at Christ the King Church in Omaha, Nebraska. Only making a most beautiful day even more beautiful, this couple gleamed brighter than the sun and were ready to get married… having the quickest entrance of the bride ever seen! Oddly enough, this church was where Fr. Ralph was baptized, but this time, he was officiating the wedding. Surrounded by their families and friends, Mary and Chris exchanged theirs vows with great emotion and happiness. On Mary marrying into the Steds Family, Chris’ brother, Nate McKeon ’17, ND Law ’22, groomsman and former Steds AR“And they lived Omahappily ever after! St. Edward’s crown acquired its most shimmering jewel yet with the addition of wonderful Mary to la familia. Good times are surely here to stay…'

…while younger brother Pete McKeon ’18 and ND Law ’21, groomsman and former Steds AR, shared, “While the Irish may have lost, St. Edward’s - and indeed love - won. My brother, a Stedsman through and through, married the love of his life (Mary) this weekend. I’m sure Mary is glad to be joining the McKeon family, but I know she is THRILLED to be joining the St. Ed’s family. This union will serve to strengthen the already unbreakable bond among all of Stedskind.”

Ralph and Nikolai Eggleton are combing St. Edward's Hall and campus to not only bring you amazing Steds student stories but also good news and weather at ND. The even better news is that there is no dearth of amazing student stories at Steds nor good news at ND (well, so long we don't talk about football).
