Is that edible or...

Thanks, but no thanks

... not? We continue a new series that raises a simple question. Is that edible or not? Campus is surrounded by many plants and trees, some of which have edible fruits and nuts. And so, we give you "Is this edible or not?" that you might be able to safely taste the goodness of nature while avoiding all those things that, well, should be avoided. Today's focus is on these berries found on a vine on a tree on the way to St. Mary's. Can we use them to make a pie? If not, then maybe some preserves? Well, are they edible? No. They are not. Identified, by Fr. Terry Ehrman, CSC, botanist and theologian, as the fruit of the poison ivy plant, these berries should be not touched let alone consumed. On these fruit of the forest, Fr. Ehrman said, "Berry not touch nor eat these berries!"

The Confessors: Playing for keeps

...and bump. Yes, you guessed it. Steds is fielding a sand volleyball team. Composed of all freshmen and called The Confessors, the Hall's team have had a successful season of booming, breaking, and bumping in the sand courts of Ricci Fields. What's their secret? They're not telling, but whatever it is, it's working. On where the team is going next, PJ Carrol, Steds freshmen and resident Michigander, said, "The Confessors had a big win against Siegfried last week to propel us into the number two seed in the beach volleyball playoffs. We are looking to make a deep run led by our fearless head coach Rhett Bianchi."

It's official...

Mr. and Mrs. JP & Stephanie Sullivan

...they're married! With fellow Stedsmen present, and Fr. Ralph witnessing, Stephanie Lazar and JP Sulivan ’13 of Steds were married at St. Alphonsus in Chicago, Illinois. It was a cloudy day, but this couple, with their contagious energy, smiles, excitement, made the sun shine for all. The only thing they couldn’t deliver was a ND victory. Still, the happily couple was celebrated well into the night and the next morning. On the wedding, Dr. James Yurkovich ’13, Stedsman and now resident Californian, shared, “The 2009-2010 second floor of St Ed’s made a strong showing to support its brother from 221, contributing TWO groomsmen, an usher, and several additional guests — our presence was felt on the dance floor and at the bar.”

More Steds...

Captain Gallagher (in red shorts) and the Steds Flag Football Boys 

... intramural sports. Again, if it is being offered by RecSports, Steds is fielding a team or two, sometimes, even three. Yesterday, we heard from our freshmen tennis stars, but today, it's time to direct the light on another rising stars, or stars, of the intramural scene. The Steds' intramural flag football team has once again taken to Ricci Fields, and they're giving it their all, showing no mercy. Captained by Tommy Gallagher, Steds junior and resident Indianian, marshaled the team's talent to take down their opponent, Baumer Hall, much like the ND football team did with Wisconsin this past weekend. Indeed, no mercy, no fear here. On winning, an exuberant Captain Gallagher said, “Getting a 'W' was fully expected and a great way to start the season. This team has one goal in mind: getting to the Stadium and winning the championship!”

Saturday squirrel.

Walnuts, walnuts, and more walnuts

Sometimes someone else's trash is another person's treasure. That was certainly the case with this furry friend. No one is looking for a walnut, but this squirrel was. On God Quad, this squirrel found a treasure, fresh walnut, and just as fast as it was found, it was consumed. The walnut wasn't buried for a later time. No, it was consumed right then and there. On devouring the walnut, our furry friend non-verbaled, "It's walnut season."

It wasn't that...

Wind: Natural tree pruning 

... windy, but in the end, it really was. During a sunny day, the wind was warm and breezy. Now, it wasn't the wind you would associated with a storm, but let us say, it was a noticeable wind. To be honest, it was a nice wind to have as it was warmer than usual. But who knew just how windy it really was? No one did. Only when a branch from one of the hundred years old oak trees of God Quad did we grasp... "hey, it's pretty windy out there!" On the east side of God Quad, the wind brought down a large branch of an oak tree, and thankfully, when it did, no one was injured. On the tree damage, Peter Raus, said, "It's fortunate that no one was around to be injured. It is much better to give limb than take a life!"
