Yurkovich with "La Jolla" in the background
James Yurkovich ’13,
Stedsman and ND electrical engineering graduate, is currently studying at the
University of California at San Diego as a PhD candidate in Bioinformatics and
Systems Biology. When my travels took me out West, I had the opportunity
to catch up with Yurkovich. Here’s what he had to say…
St. Ed: Systems Biology? Does that
have anything to do with Matrix’s “System Biolage” hair care products?
Yurkovich:
I am afraid the Government has deemed that information as
"classified." All I am at liberty to say is that the phrase
"high and tight" doesn't just refer to how to run with a football.
St. Ed: How would you describe
“Californian living?”
Yurkovich:
Exactly as you would expect…like slippers and like Jamba Juice.
St. Ed: Even though you’re in San Diego, you’re
actually in La, Jolla, California. Remembering my high school German, don't you
pronounce “La Jolla” with a hard “J”?
Yurkovich:
Correct, and yes -- and a hard
"L" as well. It’s pronounced like "jolly" but with an
"a" on the end. In the end, it helps to keep the everyone happy,
knowing we live in such a jolly place.
St. Ed: Any words of wisdom for
your Stedsmen back at ND?
Yurkovich:
Learn to drive a stick shift. You never know when your getaway car might have a
manual transmission.
Sound advice indeed!
