Lis: Standing by the water but never afraid...
... above water, making a wave when you can... and avoiding the Covid. That, sung to the tune of the 70's show Good Times, would sum up the life of Stedsman junior, Alec Lis, Californian lifeguard and Steds Welcome Week co-captain. Once again, Lis is keeping the beaches of Southern California safe, even in the midst of a pandemic. When he wasn't at the beach or filling in at the movie set for the relaunch of the 90's show Bay Watch as body double, we were able to ask young Lis what it's like out there in the sand and surf.
St Ed: You thought you had your hands full saving every want to be surfer, but now, that must pale in comparison with today's situation. Is that true?
Lis: It’s been a turbulent time at the beach. So many people complain the beaches are open and an equal number rant about the Fourth of July closure. Protocol changes by the week, and it’s hard to keep up with everything. But at the end of the day, I’m stoked to be in the tower and watching the water.
St. Ed: Does it ever get boring being in the tower waiting for something to happen?
Lis: Well, before being in the tower, they had me up doing trail maintenance. It was funny because as families would walk by, they would ask us what crimes we committed and/or comment on the difficulties of chain gang living. I would awkwardly respond, "I am not serving time, but in fact, I am a state lifeguard who happens to attend the University of Notre Dame!"
... to WADE in the water too!
