Congratulations!

New residents: You've won the ND lottery!

With housing assignments announced yesterday, the forty new residents of Notre Dame's oldest and most storied residence hall have been chosen. Receiving their assignments on the 10th of July, the new Steds residents will arrive in early August for Welcome Week and orientation, Covid style. On rooming assignments, Fr. Ralph said, “What does it feel like being placed in Steds? Well, I think it must feel like finding the golden ticket in Charlie and Chocolate Factory… you’ve won!”

Your Sunday picture...

...from Notre Dame. Here's a view from Grace Hall looking south, and in the far distance you can see the east AND the south buildings of the new football stadium expansion. Hey, you can even see one of the new residence halls, Flaherty Hall, in the foreground.  Enjoy your Sunday wherever you are!

Midst the planning...

Steds Gym: Gainz happening here

... for the opening of the Fall Semester, Steds has been making its plans too but also its plans for a renovation. Thanks to a generous benefaction, the Steds gym is going through a much needed refresh. Overseeing the refresh is none other than Ben Merrick, former Hall Vice President and gym rat. Just before the University closed the residence halls and sent students home, Merrick completed and submitted his plans, and it was perfect timing. With no one around campus and nothing to do, the maintenance department catapulted our project to first place, and with that, it is on course to being completed by the time residents return. On the renovation, Merrick said, "The renovated Steds gym will be a true masterpiece. There is still plenty of work to be done, but our new iron home will allow our Gentlemen to continue their reign as the strongest and best looking men on campus, especially when compared to Zahm."

Keeping your head...

Lis: Standing by the water but never afraid...

... above water, making a wave when you can... and avoiding the Covid. That, sung to the tune of the 70's show Good Times, would sum up the life of Stedsman junior, Alec Lis, Californian lifeguard and Steds Welcome Week co-captain. Once again, Lis is keeping the beaches of Southern California safe, even in the midst of a pandemic. When he wasn't at the beach or filling in at the movie set for the relaunch of the 90's show Bay Watch as body double, we were able to ask young Lis what it's like out there in the sand and surf.

St Ed: You thought you had your hands full saving every want to be surfer, but now, that must pale in comparison with today's situation. Is that true?

Lis: It’s been a turbulent time at the beach. So many people complain the beaches are open and an equal number rant about the Fourth of July closure. Protocol changes by the week, and it’s hard to keep up with everything. But at the end of the day, I’m stoked to be in the tower and watching the water.

St. Ed: Does it ever get boring being in the tower waiting for something to happen?

Lis: Well, before being in the tower, they had me up doing trail maintenance. It was funny because as families would walk by, they would ask us what crimes we committed and/or comment on the difficulties of chain gang living. I would awkwardly respond, "I am not serving time, but in fact, I am a state lifeguard who happens to attend the University of Notre Dame!"

... to WADE in the water too!

Fr. Corby

...the future President of Notre Dame, Fr. William Corby, CSC, gave General Absolution to the Union's Irish Brigade in the second day of the Battle of Gettysburg. One of only three persons to have the distinct honor of having a statue at the actually battlefield, Fr. Corby has yet another statue commemorating his actions. Located outside the hall that bears his name, Corby Hall, there is an exact replica of statue of him at Gettysburg. And there's your Notre Dame history lesson...
