Out to lunch

Our furry friends are indisposed, and so, another campus neighbor takes to the forefront, Canada goose. Spotted on the fourth floor of the Duncan Student Center, this Canada goose was perch on the roof's edge, eyeing the greenery of the "green roof." Surprised to see a goose with such perch, the sight was a bit surreal unsure if it was real or a piece of art capturing a moment of existential crisis... should I eat or should I go and fly away. On being spotted, this goose non-verbaled, "Oh, there's a view with this salad bar."

Crashing...

Flagrant Foulers never fouling around

... out. Yes, our Bookstore Basketball team composed of all seniors, the Flagrant Foulers, recently crashed out of the tourney. Losing by fourteen points, the squad went out in specular fashion, making the Hindenburg look like an on time arrival. Still, the valor and courage of the squad, composed of (from left to right) Stephen Heritage, Sam Martin, Nikolai Eggleton, John Gallagher, and Marshall Smith, is to be commended, playing for not simply for the coveted "W" but really for they were on and off the court, gentlemen. Indeed, they are the true winners. On the loss, Marshall Smith shared, "But we got to the dance, the Round of Sixty-Four!"

 ... the Gentlemen's Monthly. Yes, one year ago today, here was today's posting. Enjoy this blast from the recent past. Oh, how we forget what we just did!

Room Picks Night...

Kabir: Leading the way...

... at St. Ed's. Yes, the biggest night at St. Ed's is Room Picks Night. Every returning Stedsmen has the opportunity to pick his room as well as roommate(s) for the upcoming year. How does this happen? Arm wrestling? A game of darts or pool? Feats of strengths? No. Lottery pick numbers. Thanks to an algorithm at the Office of Housing, randomly generated lottery list are produced, giving each resident a number... and picks are based off that number. Rising seniors go first, followed by rising juniors, and then, last but not least, rising sophomores were at the end. Again, regardless of one's lottery number, everyone's a winner... because every room at Steds is better than any and all rooms elsewhere on campus! But... there had to be a gentleman who would get to go first in this excitement filled evening and this honor fell to Kabir Madan. 

On being first to select a room, this rising senior, resident Singaporean, and new D.A.D. (Director of Academic Discernment) for next year, shared, “Room pick night is a time for Stedsmen to really lock in and strategize. Getting to go first took some of the pressure off because it meant that there was nothing standing between me and a highly coveted single, and I was able to put my plan into action flawlessly.”

What room did Madan choose? A room that the rector would love to make his room away from his room, room 301, a single with windows on the east and south sides of the room. What more could you ask for?!

Hard times...

Sad: Just like a beached whale in Nantucket 

... continue. Just when we thought things could not get any worse, well, we were wrong. Like a declining market looking for a bottom, so are the non-biologicals of campus, the GrubHub Starships. A part of campus, ferrying various food stuffs here and there, the Starships have been experiencing hard times from existential crisis to circling aimless, but now, there is this. Spotted in between the Morris Inn and Ryan Hall, this non-biological was more like a terrestrial ship than a starship, running aground and beaching itself. Was it trying to make a statement and strike, or was it experiencing a soft or hard ware glitch? Who knows, but we do know one thing. On that one thing, an unsolicited and unnamed passerby shared, "Houston, we have problem?"

There's no better...

Steds: No better place to be

... place to be than Steds. Of course, we all feel that, but thanks to Dan Cook '96, University Architect and father of three Stedsmen, Ben '21, James '22, and John '26, we now know that too! On a recent one-of-a-kind tour, Cook accompanied outgoing University Architect, Doug Marsh, into the Dome. Yes, INTO the Dome. No one would know this, but the Dome structure actually has vents to allow for air flow, and when Cook looked out of those vents, what he did see? Well, not that other hall, the second oldest, but rather the oldest and most storied residence hall, St. Ed's! Indeed, no other residence hall is closer to the Dome, Mary, and her golden mantle than St. Ed's. On seeing St. Ed's from the inside of the Dome, Cook shared, "Taking in the one and only home of the fine gentlemen of Notre Dame, under the protection of her golden dome… what a view!"

A home run...

Cub Fans: The Stobers and Fr. Ralph

... on and off the field! Recently, while at a Cub's game, Fr. Ralph was asked if he was, well, who he was, by none other than a Stedsman, Steve Stober '11. What a chance encounter. With all the seats at Wrigley Field, some forty thousand, Steve and his family were sitting right behind Fr. Ralph. Suffice it to say, the chance encounter was a welcome surprise, a home run really, especially so as the Cubs went down against the Padres with a score of eight to seven. On the run in at home plate, Stober shared, "A one in a million chance reunion with Father Ralph at the Cubs game brought back all of the great memories of St Ed’s, time spent with him and friends that I still cherish to this day."
