Happy...

Our King...

... St. Edward's Day! Today, October 13th, is the Feast of St. Edward the Confessor, King of England and patron saint of the Founder... Fr. Edward Sorin, CSC. Since its inception, the University has celebrated  this day as "Founder's Day." Back in the day, students had the day off from classes, "iced cream" was served, games were played, and St. Edward's residents sent "congratulatory" cards to Fr. Sorin. Matter of fact, one lucky resident was selected to recite a poem, especially penned for this auspicious day to Fr. Sorin himself! All of these poems and well wishes can still be seen today at ND Archives at the Hesburgh Memorial Library. On this special day, Fr. Ralph, Rector of St. Edward's Hall, said, “May St. Edward and the Founder smile on you always and throughout Edwardtide!”

ON THIS SPECIAL DAY...

It was announced today, as it was during Founder’s Week, that Aidan Tompkins ’23 is the 2023-2024 inductee into the Order of Gentlemen, an award given for service to King and Hall.

Soaking up the sun!

In the waning days of summer, our furry friends are taken a short break so that our campus neighbors can have the attention. Today’s attention is focused on the Admiral butterfly (Vanessa atalanta) that can be seen all about campus. The Admiral butterfly can be seen in North and South America, Europe, and Asia. The diverse range of this butterfly corresponds to an equally diverse set of larval host plants used by this species, making almost any plant a home for this butterfly. On be spotted around St. Mary’s Lake, this Admiral butterfly non-verbaled, “I love sunny days.”

What's the word...

A good sign: A smiling McKenna

... in the Steds hallway? Yes, what is the word in the hallway on this Friday, the eve before the Stanford game?  Well, to be honest, there weren't many words because there were not many people about in the hallways, but we did find one soul, Shaun McKenna. On being spotted and asked what the word was concerning the game against the Cardinal, McKenna shared, "I have complete confidence in the Irish. We are going to handle business just like we did with the other Cardinals. Round two will be a cakewalk."

Someone else was in the hallway, Fr. Ralph, and though not asked but commenting anyway, said, "Stanford? They have a football team?"

Gentlemen ponder...

The pondering commences...

... many things, but tonight the Gentlemen pondered some rather specific topics. A panel of distinguished Notre Dame professors- Prof. Marah McLeod from the Law School, Prof. Bill Mattison from the Department of Theology, Dr. Christopher Kaczor from the de Nicola Center for Ethics and Culture, and Prof. John O'Callaghan from the Department of Philosophy- helped facilitate a discussion on the topics of abortion, execution, and assisted suicide. Entitled "Matters of Life & Death: Abortion, Execution, and Assisted Suicide in America,” these four speakers gave their scholarly perspectives on current academic, legal, moral, political, and philosophical debates surrounding these issues, bringing a cross-disciplinary perspective to the pondering and subsequent conversation.These topics are timely, given the upcoming election, but their discussion also will made the Gentlemen better informed and more engaged members of their community and engaged citizens of their Nation. On the evening, Eoghan Fay, Steds Assistant Rector and organizer of the pondering, said, "Our first AGP was a smashing success. It was tremendous to see the metaphorical sparks fly as our distinguished panel addressed the questions of Stedsmen and addressed these critical moral, theological, legal, and political questions, and the Gentlemen certainly engaged the panel thoroughly. Little wonder Stedsmen are the faculty's favourite students!"

Strikes and...

Stedsmen were striking out...

... spares. The Stedsmen were collecting strikes and spares recently as they took to the local lanes for an evening of gentlemenly fun. Regardless of skill, every Stedsmen gave it the old college go, doing their best to get their share of strikes, spares, and/or whatever pins they could. Some had more success than others, but regardless of one's score and if they were in the gutter more often than not, everyone had a great time. And if things couldn't get any better, they did! Pizza and drinks were provided. Nothing goes better with bowling than greasy pizza and sugary drinks! On bowling for his time and getting a strike, Darren Tanuwijaya, Steds freshman and resident Indonesian, shared, "Miracles do happen!"

Gainz, gainz and...

Rybinski: On the gainz train...

... more gainz! The Stedsmen are getting real gainz this semester thanks to a refreshed Steds gym. From new dumbbells to new weight racks, from a new leg extension machine to a new power rack and much more, the Steds gym received a serious, much needed, and complete refresh over the summer. A part of President Tommy Kelly's "Project Refresh," the Steds gym was the recipient of ND Day funds, and thanks to those funds, improvements and upgrades were made that kept the Steds "gainz train" rolling on. On using the newly refreshed Steds gym, Kevin Rybinski, Steds junior and Marylander, commented, "The revamped Steds gym is more than just a place to work out; it's a vibrant community hub that champions wellness and empowers Stedsmen to thrive. Together, we're forging deep connections and achieving strength through our shared commitment to growth. Roll Steds.”

Arriving not only in time for Founder's Week but also for the recent cooler temps, this couture apparel line is keeping all attention and eyes on Steds. Designed by sophomores Derek Buckendorf and Thomas Collins, this fall collection captures the espirit de corp of the Gentlemen and reflects their active lifestyle. On collecting his apparel, Gabe Nanni, Steds sophomore and resident South Bender, shared, "I absolutely love it, and Cole tells me that this sweatshirt draws out my eyes too."
