Four Aces: Bifone, Hiott, Dinglasa, and Howe

... Las Vegas! While the excitement and energy of Las Vegas now in the rear view mirror of life, the memories continue. Amid all the Irish fans who made the trek out to Vegas for the showdown against BYU, four Stedsmen were in that crowd. Members of the ND Marching Band, senior Nathaniel Hiott, junior Nico Dinglasa, and freshmen Kevin Bifone and John Howe were doing what they could to ensure a win against the 16th ranked Cougars. Playing like they never played before, each of these Stedsmen did their duty not only to King and Hall but also to team and Irish fans everywhere as the Irish pulled out a victory. On traveling to Vegas for the Shamrock Series game, Hiott, trombone and resident South Carolinian shared, "We had an awesome time in Vegas though! Although maybe a little too much fun on the casino floor… but we all learned something, always bet on the Irish!"

Happy...

It's my day!

... St. Edward's Day! Today, October 13th, is the Feast of St. Edward the Confessor, King of England and patron saint of the Founder... Fr. Edward Sorin, CSC. Since its inception, the University has celebrated  this day as "Founder's Day." Back in the day, students had the day off from classes, "iced cream" was served, games were played, and St. Edward's residents sent "congratulatory" cards to Fr. Sorin. Matter of fact, one lucky resident was selected to recite a poem, especially penned for this auspicious day to Fr. Sorin himself! All of these poems and well wishes can still be seen today at ND Archives at the Hesburgh Memorial Library. On this special day, Fr. Ralph, Rector of St. Edward's Hall, said, “May St. Edward and the Founder smile on you always!”

ON THIS SPECIAL DAY...

It was announced today that Henry Bergstrom ’22 and Jacob Smith ’22 are the 2021-2022 inductees into the Order of Gentlemen, an award given for service to King and Hall.

On his induction, Henry Bergstrom, resident Minnesotan and RecSports football captain AND champion,  said, "St. Edward’s Hall is a place I hold near and dear to my heart. Throughout my  four years in this Hall I matured, made lifelong friends, got my first job, and even won an inter mural flag football championship. Being a part of the Hall’s storied history was already enough for me, but to be bestowed with this honor is something I am extremely grateful. To join the ranks of the great men in the Order of the Gentlemen, and lead the way for the next generation, is truly a dream come true."

Still yet, on his induction, Jacob Smith, resident Michigander and sports wunderkind, shared, "To be a Notre Dame Alumni is one thing, special in its own right, but to be an Alumni of St. Ed’s is much more special to me. Every part of my four years revolved around this building and, more importantly, these people. Whether it was watching Fr. Ralph dominate on the badminton court or just eating lunch with any and all Gentlemen at the high tables at NDH, this community was and forever will be my family. Therefore, when I was informed that I would be inducted to the Order of Gentlemen, I was deeply touched and even quite emotional. I’m just elated that I was able, in my own small way, to be apart of and leave an impact on this community that I hold so dear.”

Well said... well said indeed! Congratulations to Henry and Jacob!

It's official...

Mr. and Mrs. Ripp with their bridal party...

... they're married! With Fr. Ralph witnessing and with family and fellow Stedsmen present, Erin Bergano and Kyle Ripp ’14 were married at St. Joseph’s Church in Garden City, New York. It was a beautiful and crisp fall day, with full sun, but that wasn’t the only thing that was shining. So was the couple. Without question, the couple was absolutely radiant so that everyone needed sunglasses to look at them, and thankfully, knowing this already or just out of sheer generosity, the couple provided their guests with a pair. Thank you Erin and Kyle! On his Vice President's marriage and the addition of Erin to the Steds Family, Frank Soler, resident New Yorker, former Hall President, and groomsman, shared, "During Kyle's Vice Presidency, boundless, yet tasteful, frivolity became the hallmark of a hall in its renaissance!  That quality, inspired by Kyle’s own character, was on full display as we celebrated his marriage to Erin this weekend. We thank Kyle for all he has contributed to the St. Edward’s Hall Family, and look forward watching that same boundless spirit guide a long-lasting and happy marriage!"

Steds love...

Steds. How can you not? Really. How can you not love Notre Dame's oldest and most storied residence hall? Love the history! Love the traditions! Love the architecture! Love the blog and podcast! Love the Gentlemen! Now, it could go on and on, but again, what's not to love about Steds?! During a recent visit to campus for a football weekend, Maria Carroll, ND graduate and mother of Stedsman sophomore PJ Carroll, was reminded of her love for Steds. On running into the Gentlemen in St. Edward's Park, Maria shared, "We were quickly reminded why Saint Ed’s is the best hall!"

On Maria Carroll's comment on Steds love, Fr. Ralph said, "I concur."

... well, some of it! Ordered back in August, Hall apparel was designed by Steven Crabtree, who inspired by the previous Steds designers, crafted a line that reflects not only the esprit de corp but also the active lifestyle of the Gentlemen. Eye catching for sure, this couture apparel line, like others, will be envy of campus. In short, it is yet another triumph for Crabtree and the Hall, making Steds, well, Steds. On collecting his apparel order, Brendan Avey said, " Hands down, Steds has the best merch on campus. Sorin can’t compete with our style."

Saturday Squirrel.

It's praying not preying!

Our furry friends continue to be on an extended hiatus, we have the opportunity to focus the spotlight on others. Without question, our attention often focus on the larger critters on campus, the turtles, deer, possums, and so forth, but what about the smaller ones? Now, we're not talking red squirrels, chipmunks and the like. Rather, we're talking about those critters with multiple legs and antenna... insects! Recently, a praying mantis, or mantid, was spotted on Steds. Flying about like a butterfly and after making a few circle around the photographer, the mantis came to rest on the building. Praying? We think not. Rather, it was probably preying on something that it spied. There are approximately two thousand mantid species worldwide with the majority being found in Asia. About twenty species are native to the USA. These insects are notorious predators and their name is sometime mistakenly spelled "preying mantis" which is incorrect. They are in fact named for the typical "prayer-like" stance. On spotting a praying mantis on Steds, Fr. Terry Ehrman, CSC, theologian and botanist, said, "While this praying mantis is preying, did we pray today?"
