Howe and Steds doing their part!

… band! With the football team headed out west to Vegas for a showdown against BYU, so too will the band of the Fighting Irish! Kept in reserve during the Ohio State game, the Notre Dame Marching Band is now being deployed. With the team and the band together, the combined power will be such that no cougar of BYU will be able to withstand it, making their defeat inevitable. And one of those who will be there is John Howe, Steds freshman and resident Texan. Howe will give it more than the old college go as he brings the power of the tuba this weekend because he will playing as if the world depends on it... and to a certain degree, it does. And how will Howe get ready for the mission of his life? On preparing for the game of his life, Howe said, “I can’t start my night in Vegas without starting my morning with a Steds cup of coffee!”

O'Leary: At the right place, the right time, and with the right mug

... Christmas, but it certainly feels like it at Steds. That's right. It feels a lot like Christmas because everyone is receiving a Steds mug! A couture design crafted by Steds for Steds, this mug is not only stylish and eye catching but also practical and functional. And that's the order of the day, practical and functional because that's what's needed when trying to access the new coffee machine in the newly renovation Gregorian Lounge... a good, dependable coffee mug. As chance would have it, former Vice President Jack O'Leary, who was a part of the administration who put the renovation in lounge motion as well as the first to use the new coffee machine, once again made Steds history by being the first to use a new Steds coffee mug. On the Steds mug, O'Leary shared, "There’s no better way to enjoy a high class coffee than with a high class mug. From light fixtures to fresh lattes, the new Greg really has it all."

Play ball!

Playing ball...

While the semester is rolling on and fall is falling, we cannot forget the past and the summer that was. Indeed, every time we walk out into the crisp autumn morning and feeling a chill, we cannot help but let our minds harken back to the warmer, slower days of summer. As we let our mind wander back to the past, we have to tell this Steds summer story. Chris Scott '18, Stedsmen and native Chicagoan, invite Stedsmen in the Chicago area to join him at Wrigley Field to see the Cubs take on the Marlins from a skybox. From air conditioned comfort and with a never ending buffet of food, everyone not only enjoyed themselves, reuniting, reminiscing, and repasting, but also seeing a Cub's win! On the Steds Family gathering at Wrigley, Fr. Ralph Haag, C.S.C., said, "When Chris is at the helm, everyone is having fun, and I wouldn't be surprised if someone needed wheel chair assistance after bellying up to that never ending buffet! And that's not even mentioning the dessert cart... my biggest mistake!"

Winners...

Winners: Gonzalo, Dieterich, and Lynch...

... again. Not to be like Alexander, who wept for there were no more worlds to conquer, the Gentlemen resolved not to stand down. With the annual Battle for the Shadow 3 on 3 basketball tourney with Zahm Hall forever won, the Gentlemen searched for the next conquest, challenge... the next chapter, really... to add to their long and storied history. Confounded for a bit, an epiphany was eventually had in the Red Room which gave birth to the Steds Invitational. A 3 on 3 basketball tourney with whomever is residing in "Swing Hall," the designation now given to Zahm Hall as it houses residence halls who are undergoing a year long renovation, the Steds Invitational is the new "golden fleece."

The inaugural Steds Invitational was held with Alumni Hall, current residents of Swing Hall, with teams vying to take any and all glory from the court for themselves and more important for their halls. Given Alumni's size, the talent was deep, but never backing down, the Stedsmen rose to the challenge. As the tourney progressed, a lone trio of Gentlemen found themselves in the final, battling a very talented Alumni team. With the hopes and dreams of the entire Hall resting upon them, Steds seniors, Michael Lynch, Brian Gonzalo, Will Dieterich, channeled their basketball inspirations onto the Steds court, sinking two pointers and three pointers too, in a flurry so quick and fast that it dazed and confused their opponents and onlookers alike. Suffice it to say, it was over before it started, with Steds winning by a score of 11 to 4.

On winning the inaugural Steds Invitational, Gonzalo stated, "Life is about getting buckets,” while Dieterich shared, "Michael Jordan said he never lost a game, he just ran out of time... we just never lost.”  

Finally, Lynch added, "There are those life-defining moments that you’ll never forget. Your graduation, your wedding, the birth of your first child.. and for us, the inaugural 2022 Steds Invitational. The competition was fierce and the doubters were vocal. Some worried about our age, some worried about Will’s abroad absence from the interhall team last year, and others worried about my effort. We were fueled by these concerns. I was also fueled by 3 chicken sandwiches consumed right before tip off. If the Steds Invitational showed us anything it’s that old men can still hoop and Steds will always perform. It was a great win for the new administration and the only way to start the Steds Invitational.

Winners...

Triumphant Seniors....

... twice over! The word is synonymous with Steds. It's been said that Steds has never looked back since 1882. Whatever it may be, Steds is always playing for keeps. So, it was no surprise when Steds enter the Euro Cup competition, they were making a run for the championship. And the Steds Euro Cup squad, composed of seniors and aptly named "Straight outta Compiègne," is no stranger to taking home the winner's cup, winning several championships over the past few years. In true Steds fashion, when the competition began, the squad never looked back, ultimately winning the Euro Cup with a comfortable.

But it wasn't just the seniors giving it a go, for the Steds freshmen were present too. Yes, next year's contenders were on deck, learning the proverbial ins and outs of the competition so as to bring home a future championship win. And it looks promising. Just like the seniors, the freshmen too never looked back. Making their debut appearance in the junior Euro Cup, Nathan Holt, Finn Meffe, and Colin Steven, and Leandro Avelar, exceeded all exceptions and clenched the win, making Steds winners twice over! On the win, Holt, Steds freshman and resident Washingtonian, shared, "I’m just happy to continue the tradition of Steds dominance and secure the Euro Cup alongside great guys and friends."

Saturday squirrel.

Catching some rays

Our furry continue to be on hiatus, and so, we have an opportunity to see the others who share campus with us. We all know they are there, but we never see them. But once in a great while, we get lucky and do. And that was certainly the case while taking a walk around St. Mary's Lake. Out of the blue, in broad daylight, on the half submerged tree limb for all to see was a Notre Dame snapping turtle. But there's more. This snapping turtle not only was sunning himself but also scoping out a nearby treasure. What was the treasure? Well, you'll just have to watch the videos below. And by the way, he wasn't the only one scoping out the treasure. On being seen, this victorious snapping turtle non-verbaled, "Carpe Carp!"
