Winners...

Triumphant Seniors....

... twice over! The word is synonymous with Steds. It's been said that Steds has never looked back since 1882. Whatever it may be, Steds is always playing for keeps. So, it was no surprise when Steds enter the Euro Cup competition, they were making a run for the championship. And the Steds Euro Cup squad, composed of seniors and aptly named "Straight outta Compiègne," is no stranger to taking home the winner's cup, winning several championships over the past few years. In true Steds fashion, when the competition began, the squad never looked back, ultimately winning the Euro Cup with a comfortable.

But it wasn't just the seniors giving it a go, for the Steds freshmen were present too. Yes, next year's contenders were on deck, learning the proverbial ins and outs of the competition so as to bring home a future championship win. And it looks promising. Just like the seniors, the freshmen too never looked back. Making their debut appearance in the junior Euro Cup, Nathan Holt, Finn Meffe, and Colin Steven, and Leandro Avelar, exceeded all exceptions and clenched the win, making Steds winners twice over! On the win, Holt, Steds freshman and resident Washingtonian, shared, "I’m just happy to continue the tradition of Steds dominance and secure the Euro Cup alongside great guys and friends."

Catching some rays

Our furry continue to be on hiatus, and so, we have an opportunity to see the others who share campus with us. We all know they are there, but we never see them. But once in a great while, we get lucky and do. And that was certainly the case while taking a walk around St. Mary's Lake. Out of the blue, in broad daylight, on the half submerged tree limb for all to see was a Notre Dame snapping turtle. But there's more. This snapping turtle not only was sunning himself but also scoping out a nearby treasure. What was the treasure? Well, you'll just have to watch the videos below. And by the way, he wasn't the only one scoping out the treasure. On being seen, this victorious snapping turtle non-verbaled, "Carpe Carp!"

A Gentleman ponders...

Pondering in the Flounge...

... Cold War policy. The Steds A Gentleman Ponders series kicked off its new season pondering post-war presidencies Cold War policies. Organized by the Hall's D.A.D., Director of Academic Discernment, Eoghan Fay, and held in the Flounge, as the Gregorian Lounge was under construction, the night's pondering was facilitated by Fr. Bill Miscamble, C.S.C. A native Australian and Holy Cross priest, Fr. Miscamble's focus is the Cold War, and leaving his accent aside, he methodically examined past presidencies and their policies, eventually ranking them from worst to best. And if that wasn't enough, there was time for questions and answers as well as a raffle, where three copies of Miscamble's From Roosevelt to Truman" Potsdam, Hiroshima, and Yalta were given away as prizes. Winners were freshman Jackson O'Neill, junior Steven Crabtree, and senior Patrick Campbell. On winning a copy of Miscamble's book, Campbell stated, "Father Miscamble was eloquent and very informative. He always catches the attention of the scholarly Stedsman. It was an honor to have him, and an even greater honor to be able to win a copy of his book. Winning a copy reminds me of the Siege of Troy, where this book is a Trojan horse of sorts for knowledge and enjoyment. Still yet, Father Miscamble's John Hancock makes it priceless. I can’t wait to read it!”

... lux! Let there be light! Finally, after much waiting, the new light treatment for the Gregorian Lounge has arrived. Looking like some thing straight out of a chic SoHo loft, the new ceiling light adds a touch of modern to a room known for its history and lore. Still, replacing the four mini chandeliers in the lounge, the new light treatment not only brightens up the lounge but also can be turned off when not wanted. On the new light, Gavin Cullinan, Steds freshman and frequent lounge user, said, "The new light fixture in the Greg brightens the whole place up and makes it easier to kick back and read at night. The updates really make it an even better study space than the Library." 

We can't argue with that!

Where there's...

All smiles now, but once on the field...

... football, there's flag football. As the inter-hall football season starts, so does the inter-hall FLAG football season. This year's interest in America's second pastime is through the proverbial roof as Steds is fielding not one, not two, but three teams! It's brother against brother, gentleman against gentlemen, because all three Steds teams are vying for the coveted RecSports Championship. Suffice it to say, everyone is playing for keeps. Next week will have everyone as the Steds freshmen takes on one of the sophomore squad.  But last night all three Steds teams saw action at Ricci Fields with mixed results. Sadly, one of the sophomore teams, "The Stedsmen," had a tough go against Baumer Hall, eventually losing to the upstarts from West Quad. On the loss, John Gallagher, sophomore and resident Indianan, shared, "It was a dogfight, and we lost by a score of 18-13. Sad. The rain may have put a damper on the playing conditions, but not on our spirits!" 

BUT...

There were winners too. Steds Seniors, a team composed of Steds seniors and one junior, took on a team from the University's second oldest residence hall, Sorin, and came out with the "W". On defeating Sorin, Michael Mitchell, Steds junior and the junior member of team Steds Seniors , declared, "When Sorin took a 12-7 lead, I was just laughing. I thought it was funny. Sorin got excited, and it’s good. Sometimes you get your little brother excited when you’re playing basketball, and let him get the lead. Then you just come back and take it back."

Playing for...

Making another run: Steds/Dunne Football Team...

... keeps! The Steds inter-hall football team kicked off its new season, beginning its run at a second RecSports championship. To facilitate play, like last year, RecSports is combining teams. So, our defending champs were paired with the Dunne Hall who played their opener against a team composed of not two but four residence halls. Looking like Christmas in motion, the Steds/Dunne quad, dressed in red, played a defensive game, a nail bitter really, against their opponents who were dressed in green. In the end, taking advantage of errors of their opponents, the Steds/Dunne squad saw an opening and put points on the board. On the win, Mike Jekot, Steds junior and co-captain, stated, "After a thrilling 3-0 bare knuckle brawl, the sentinels of Dunne and the gentlemen of St. Edward’s were able to vanquish the 4 headed hydra of Pangborn/Alumni/Carroll/Fisher. While we bask in our week one glory, we anxiously look forward to next week’s championship rematch against Stanford and Siegfried."
