Free our Moses!

… tear down this wall! Yes, tear down the wall that has been erected around Moses. Overnight, the statue of Moses had a fence erected around it for what reason no one knows. Was it for protection? Was it due to the ongoing Library renovation? Or perhaps it was some good old fashion Canaanite tomfoolery? Who knows, but what we do know is… tear down this wall and let our Moses go! On Moses being fenced in, Eoghan Fay, senior and Steds D.A.D. (Director of Academic Discernment) shared, "This man parted the Red Sea. Do they really think a fence will stop him?"

It has been...

One cool cucumber: Frick

… a little warm lately. It has been an atmospheric trifecta of rising mercury, pressure, and dew point, making everything, well, just unpleasant. And when this trifecta is coupled with a non-air conditioned residence hall, like Steds, well, it is most unpleasant. But fear not! The Gentlemen can experience relief in common spaces as well as through another, most unique way.  While many focus on relief only through air condition units, at Steds we focus on more than just that. What do we do?  We draw upon the power of the mind!  And to harass the power of mind over body, a new campus winter scene was installed in the Flounge. Taking advantage of this often untapped power was freshman and resident Indianan, Gavin Frick. On sitting under the new campus winter scene on a hot day, Frick shared, “It’s hot now, but I am feeling cooler now. I’m really looking forward to experiencing campus in the winter from the safety of the Flounge. The freezing winters of South Bend can be a bit much.”

Float on...

Stedsmen assemble...

… Game Day Saturdays are back! Yes, the traditional dip in the library’s reflecting pool with its ever so dark chemically, blue water is once again happening, and every Gentlemen is giving it the old college go. Started by Bobby Weltner ’14, Stedsman and new co-host of the Hall’s podcast, the Float is a fantastic opportunity for every Stedsmen to let all the internal energy and excitement of Game Day out. What is the Float? Well, waking early, Stedsmen don their swimsuits and grab their inflatables and head off to the library reflecting pool where they all jump in when the sign is given. Next, they cheer on the ND Marching Band as they march by. On the Float, PJ Carroll, Steds sophomore and Float photographer, said, "You could feel the game day atmosphere in the air this morning as we ran across North Quad to take to the reflecting pool. The Float may precede a loss, but we certainly always feel like winners out there."

Saturday squirrel.

The feeling is mutual

Our furry friends are so comfortable with our presence that they are not afraid of us drawing close to them. Still, it's almost as if they want us to come near to them so they might have a chance to share with us- friendly neighbors- their hopes, dreams, and even aspirations. Still yet, they just might be looking for an open ear. Whatever it is, we hope we can help in whatever way possible. Recently, a Stedsman, returning home after a taxing day of classes, spotted this squirrel at the front door of Steds. On being spotted hugging the portico, this squirrel non-verbaled, "I LOVE Steds!"

Is this edible?

Thanks but no thanks

Often times when we take a walk around the lakes or the wooded areas about campus, we see berries, mushrooms, and more. As these various items are spotted in the wild, a question arises. Is this edible? Could this red berry or this small mushroom be added to a salad, soup, or something else. But before we decide to take a taste of Mother Nature, we should really thoroughly investigate what exactly we might be nibbling on. While walking about the walnut groves on the far northeast side of campus, this bright yellow fungus was spotted on a tree stump. Identified as Chicken of the Forest, Laetiporus gilbertsonii, is an edible fungus, but since properly identifying fungi is extremely difficult, it's best to look and not taste. On spotting Chicken of the Forest, a botanist and theologian, speaking on the condition of anonymity, shared, " Laetiporus gilbertsonii? What's NOT for dinner... that!"

The supply chain...

Take that supply chain!

... strikes back! After dealing a blow against the supply chain with the distribution of real ND ID cards for freshmen, the supply chain is striking back. Yes, the supply chain is not down for the count as it wreaking havoc with the arrival of new furniture and light fixtures for the Gregorian Lounge. Despite being ordered in May, the much desired additions to campus’ oldest student lounge are nowhere to be found. While an estimated arrival date was given, a carnival barker guessing the weight of passerbyers would be more accurate. But in true Steds fashion, the Gentlemen are taking the lemons dealt by the supply chain and making lemonade out of them. Thanks to the generosity of the residents of room 305, a putting green was added to the Gregorian, right where some of the new furniture would go. Without any doubt, the putting green is a testimony of the resiliency of the Gentlemen as well as an ingenious way of taking not only advantage of the empty space but also knocking off a few strokes of their golf game.

On the putting green, Nick Bifone, Colin Davidson, Aidan Ekizian, and Tim Parisi shared, “We don’t even want the couches anyway, our master plan is to create a mini golf course spanning the entire Greg. It’ll really add to the ambiance of the Greg as a study space.”
