Painful, sublime, or...

Not telling you where this is...

...painfully sublime? Yes, today starts a new regular addition to the blog where we take a look at campus art. Is it painful, or is it sublime? Maybe it is painfully sublime? Indeed, art is in the eye of the beholder, and with that being said, let's ask the beholder... a Stedsman. Even though he may be a computer science major, Jake Harris is not a computer geek... he's a man who appreciates the arts. Harris knows art when he sees it, and on seeing this piece of art on campus, he said, "Painfully sublime. The grandiose structure leaves me more lost as to its true meaning than a freshman is on the first day of class."

It's back...

Spring and Spring Break needed

...but hopefully not to stay. It's hard to see for sure, but it's there. Look around the statue of St. Edward. During the night, snow has once again made a campus appearance. Unfortunately, a warm spell in late February lured many of us into thinking that spring had sprung early, but how wrong that thinking was! More snow is on the way, and all of this makes many of us now think that winter has worn out its welcome. Thankfully, Spring Break starts next week, but for some, like Steds senior Jake Miller, it won't come soon enough. On the recent and predicted snowfall, the native Floridian said, "Only the great Will Smith’s “Miami” on repeat keeps me sane during these troubling times."

But unfortunately it was. Yes, in the second round of his bout in the Finals of Bengal Bouts, Patrick "Pay Day" Yerkes was pulled from the match by the referee. Still, there's no absolutely reason why Patrick should be downcast. As a fifth year senior, Patrick has had a terrific run- even returning after a defeat in the quarterfinals only to win in the semifinals! Pay Day? Call him Lazarus! Even though "Pay Day" wasn't able to cash out with a win, he had his day- and that's more than a lot of boxers can say! Congratulations to Yerkes... and we look forward to the return of Steds boxing next year!

On his appearance in the Finals, Yerkes said, "Being in the Finals is special. It's definitely something I won’t forget. Thanks for all the support, and stay tuned for my future boxing endeavors. First stop is some golden gloves tournaments."

Congratulations to Yerkes and all our boxers, and we look forward to the return of Steds boxing next year!

Amazing

Who knew? Yes, who knew that the Witch Hazel came in both red AND yellow varieties. Still yet, who knew that BOTH varieties are here on campus? I certainly didn't know this, and I don't think Fr. Terry Ehrman, CSC, theologian and part-time botanist, knew this either. Yet, one day, on one of his early morning walks, Fr. Terry stumbled upon this on campus find. On Fr. Ralph's question of "Why is there a yellow Witch Hazel?" Fr. Ehrman said, "God likes to paint with many of colors."

A building update.

Getting closer to being done

Progress is being made on the new architecture building that's going up across from Legend's. Set to open in the Fall, the Walsh School of Architecture will replace the school's current home of Bond Hall which some may remember was the original campus library. If you look closely, you will notice that the building has two brick colors- red and yellow. A special, one of a kind red brick reflects the future while the yellow brick harkens back to the past, paying homage to yellow brick made by the Holy Cross Brothers from the marl of the lakes. On the use of a unique, one of a kind red brick, an unnamed Stedsman said, "Yes, the red brick needs to be special. After all, it's a special building for those who are special because they build special things."

Shelley: Twenty lost minutes

... in the belly of the whale for three days, but Steds very own, Ryan Shelley, was in the belly of the Steds elevator for... well... a long time... at least twenty minutes. Yes, for twenty minutes, Shelley endured a captivity like none other being trapped in that metal tube that is the Steds "vator." And while Shelley was suffering so were his roommates.  

Recounting the ordeal...

Sophomore Joe Corcoran said, “Ryan texted to a small group of Steds guys and said, ‘who do I call if I’m stuck in the elevator? I’ m covered in sweat and just confused!’ When he was released, we definitely felt a great wave relief swept over us, but for Ryan, there was a tsunami of embarrassment as a group of firemen rescued him. Still, I felt bad and a little worried for him while he was stuck in the elevator, but as soon as he was free I couldn’t stop laughing or joking about it.”

Junior, Chuck Rioux shared, “I felt worried and helpless. But at the same time, I have been eyeing Ryan's ray-ban for a while now so... plus, I wouldn't mind a 4.0 GPA.”

Sophomore Greg Connors, added, “Honestly, I got the text and immediately started doing Hail Marys in the middle of NDH. I was terrified at the possibility of losing my loft mate, and thank God in the end, I didn’t. It would have been funnier if he was stuck in there longer.  We should have kept him up there for a couple hours to let him just think about life.

Finally, Shelley said, “What do I want from all of this? Aside from the free tank top that Fr. Ralph offered me, I would like a framed likeness of me in the elevator telling of my heroic story.  Perhaps a book deal, and /or a firm handshake with the key to the Dome presented to me by Fr. Jenkins would do just nicely!”
