Reflections from...

Steds Reunion: Vin Kurian ‘00, Rob Geveda '00, Brian Clarke ‘99, Jody Penton '00,
Will Mayfield ‘00, and TJ Brecht ‘01

... Atlanta. The recent Super Bowl has many of us not only thinking but also yearning for the start of the next college football season, but sadly, we must wait a bit for that day. But it's coming, and when it does, what a season it will be! In the meantime, as we continue to congratulate our football team for a fantastic season and a great run for the Championship, we hear from those who were there cheering them on. Today, we hear from several former Steds residents from the late 90’s who got together with their families to pre-game at a restaurant just outside of the team hotel. Traveling in from South Bend, Charlotte, Mississippi, Louisiana, New York, and New Jersey, these Steds Alumni were not going to miss the opportunity to gather together in Hotlanta. After all, it had been twenty-five years since they were all under the same roof at STEDS (or St. Ed’s as us old timers say). And while they bleed blue and gold on any given weekend in the fall, there's no doubt this Steds crew still bleeds green and gold too. On the game, Will Mayfield '00 shared, "As far as the game… It’s better to have love and lost than to be a Buckeye!"

Happy Super...

Let the celebration start!

... Chinese Groundhog Presidents' Day! Yes, just when you thought it wasn't possible, Steds found a way! This day, unique only to Steds, celebrates four celebrations at once... the Super Bowl, Chinese New Year's, Groundhog's Day, AND Presidents' Day. So, in the Flounge, with the Super Bowling playing the background, the Gentlemen enjoyed Chinese food from JW Chen's, LaCroix sprinkling waters, and cherry pies by Hostess, Drake's, and Martin's Supermarket. Suffice it to say, regardless of who one was cheering for, there were smiles all around. On hosting Super Chinese Groundhog Presidents' Day, Fr. Ralph said, "Thank God it only comes once a year!"

Your Sunday picture...

Glowing Gold

... from Notre Dame. Here's a view of Mary and the Dome as the sun was rising across campus. Yes, the permacloud broke just enough to allow the Sun and its rays to warm and make everything glow just a bit in the early morning light. And that's certainly what Mary and Dome did, glowed! Enjoy, and enjoy your Sunday wherever you may be!

Saturday Squirrel.

Hungry eyes

The winter has taken a toll on all of us, but the brunt of the season has been felt by our furry friends. Outside twenty-four, seven, campus squirrels have endured everything that Old Man Winter has thrown at us from snow, bitterly cold temperatures, arctic breezes, and most recently, ice and sleet which made campus an ice rink. This squirrel, spotted outside the Main Building where the sidewalks were especially salted and treated to prevent icing, was brave enough to leave his leave nest to do whatever squirrels do. On being spotted, this squirrel non-verbaled, "Hey man, can you spare a peanut, an almond, whatever you got man, really."

Best of...

... the Gentlemen's Monthly. Well, one year ago this was the posting. Enjoy this blast from the very near and distant past.

Hurray!

Larson (center) with fans, Presidents Tompkins and Storch

Taking a break from the war, we draw our attention to the home front where things continue to roll on... and hurray for a young film producer! It was a night in which the Notre Dame glitterati came out in force to celebrate their own as well as rising stars in the industry. Thomas Larson, a young and upcoming producer, won the award at the Notre Dame Film festival for his short film entitled ConFISHion, shocking all, even himself, and making history as the first non-documentary short film to win this coveted award. Even though it has been declared the feel good short film of the year and a guaranteed crowd pleaser, ConFISHion will NOT be in a theater near you any time soon or, well, ever. But fear not! You can watch it right NOW in the comfort of wherever you may be. Click on the link below. On the surprise win by Larson, former President Aidan Tompkins said, "With our mullets, we may look tough and rugged (because we are), but we also possess a sensitive, artistic side. Larson gave the Gentleman’s response to the age old “brains or brawn” debate with “why not both?"

Still, other viewers wanted to share their thoughts on what will become a timeless classic of the cinema. On Larson's ConFISHion, an unnamed film festival attendee declared, "A triumph," while another uttered, "a must see." Finally, another viewer shared, "Finally, something the whole family can watch."

Farewell to...

General Mackey: The man, the myth and the mullet

... hair wars. Reminiscent of General George Washington submitting his retirement to the Continental Congress at the conclusion of the Revolutionary War, General Mackey did the same. Yes, General Mackey submitted his retirement to the Steds Hall Government this afternoon after a lightening fast and successful Mullets campaign. Mackey's resignation paves the way for not only a much needed rest but also another Stedsman to assume the "commandership" of Mullets Against Malaria, marshaling the many follicles of Steds in that yearly showdown again plasmodium falciparum, a.k.a. malaria. On his resignation, Mackey shared,

"I am pleased to announce that malaria has been vanquished, and peace has been restored. This was a very swift campaign, completed in record time. Future generations will tell tales of our victory.

Being Mullet Commissioner has been one of the most rewarding experiences of my time at Notre Dame. Mullets Against Malaria is more than just a fun tradition. It is a way for us to turn something as ridiculous as a haircut into something meaningful. The mullet may be temporary, but the impact we make is lasting. Thank you to everyone who has made this campaign successful through your support and donations!

I will now focus on my boxing skills for the upcoming Bengal Bouts."

Congratulations to General Mackey and
good luck in the Bengal Bouts!
