Your Sunday picture...

Glory's mantle- and fog- cloaks thee...

... from Notre Dame. The combination of snow and warm temperatures had made for melting and a lot of fog. Early morning fog has enveloped campus, shrouding everything. While the fog burns off by midmorning, there's an eerie feel about campus until it does. Here's a view of Mary and the Dome shrouded in a fog. Enjoy this view, and enjoy your Sunday wherever you may be!

From the...

                                                                            To the left...

... front. Even though they are at the front lines, the Stedsmen still have time for high jinx. Taking advantage of the seasonable warm and sunny weather, some our brave boys assembled on the steps of Washington Hall to take a photo for those at home. First, it was to the left, then it was to the right. Finally, it was a much deserved salute to the Commander in Chief, Matt Verdeschi. Without doubt, spirits are running high, and there are smiles under those masks! On seeing our brave boys, an unnamed woman exclaimed, "It's raining mullets!"

TOMORROW, see the boys before and after on haircut day!

... now, to the right...

...finally, a salute to the Commander!

As our brave boys fight malaria, may their courage move us to join them and do our part in this battle. Let's give it to malaria, and bring our boys- and their hairstyles- back!

The war...

Nash: Fighting another war

... continues! Yes, the war against malaria continues. While great progress against the enemy has been made and all fronts are advancing, the Stedsmen are not slowing down. They're continue to press forward, fearlessly and courageously with almost reckless abandon. Still yet, with some Stedsmen getting last minute haircuts, MORE mullets and racing stripes are being deployed to the front. But as the war continues, there are some who have stayed behind and remained at the home front. They have done so not because they like malaria. Perish the thought. They, like ALL Stedsmen, hate malaria. They may not have follicles to contribute, but nevertheless, they too do their duty to Hall and King in this war. But what are they doing? One such person is CJ Nash. On being at the home front, this Junior and resident Alabaman shared, "Churchill used to motivate his soldiers by saying 'The eyes of the world are upon you,' but it is also a staunch reminder of the necessity to do laundry late Friday night.”

Photos of our brave men will be available soon... before and after pictures. Stay tuned!

To war!

Mullets to stop malaria!

The Gentlemen are off to war! After receiving their mullets, racing stripes, or both, our brave Gentlemen are off at the front battling the enemy- malaria. This year, a record number of Gentlemen answered the call to take an 80's hairstyles all in the hopes of defeating a despicable enemy. With spirits running high, the Gentlemen received their haircuts and then immediately headed off to the front. Words cannot capture the bravery and courage that these young men exuded. Their resolve and determination would edify the dispassionate, but Pete McKeon, the most free spirited and passionate 3rd floor AR,  said, "Not since Normandy have I seen this level of dedication. But, unlike Normandy, all of these guys left the battlefield against malaria in better shape than they entered. Two words: Hubba hubba. These gentleman simply look stunning.”

Photos of our brave men will be available soon... before and after pictures. Stay tuned!

The hallways...

No one to be found...

... of St. Ed's are eerily quiet. But then again, how could they not be? After all, tomorrow is a very big day for the residents of the University's most loved residence hall. The battle against malaria begins! So, borrowing a page from Ben Franklin, the Gentlemen are early to bed, early to rise, so that malaria dies! Indeed, knocking out malaria starts with a good night's rest, and without any doubt, the Gentlemen will be fresh for tomorrow's fight.

But before everyone turned in for the night, Hall President, Peter Nichols, addressed his constituents at a special Hall Council meeting. At the council meeting, President Nichols roused the Stedsmen as only the Hall President could, setting the hearts of all aglow with love of Hall and the commander of the hour, Matt Verdeschi. On the Commander in Chief that he, the Hall President, selected to marshal and lead the Steds forces, Nichols said, "Like Washington on the night before crossing the Delaware, our Commander in Chief (Matt Verdeschi) has well prepared the men of Saint Edwards Hall.  After months of growing out their hair, they are well equipped to face the unsuspecting foe - malaria. The whole Steds World is behind him, and I wish him the best of luck for a glorious and victorious day!”

Still, it is important to note that everyone, and I mean everyone, is doing his part in this battle, even the Hall President. Yes, the President! Not content to guard the home front, President Nichols will be joining his fellow Stedsmen at the front with a mullet. A true President that Nichols is, just like George Washington.

Good luck to Verdeschi and all the Gentlemen who give their hair for the cause.

The atmosphere...

Kalicak: A man with a lot of hair and a mission

... is electric. Yes, the atmosphere at Steds is simply electric as spirits are running high among those preparing for Mullets Against Malaria. Before heading to the forward command center, Commander in Chief Matt Verdeschi imparted edifying words that only rallied the morale and galvanized the determination of those heading off to the frontlines. One young soldier, whose spirit and determination are running so high he thinks he can take on malaria himself, is Jack Kalicak. Freshman and Floridian, Kalicak is all in for this fight against the despicable and deplorable enemy, malaria. When we caught up with brave young man and his mane of hair, here's what Jack had to say.

St. Ed:  You could have of stayed at home front, but you didn’t. what moved you to join the fight?

Kalicak: I joined the fight because I saw a cause worth fighting for and a group of brothers to fight alongside until the end.

St. Ed: So, you’re getting a mullet. What do you want your mullet to convey to the non-mulleted masses?

Kalicak: I want my mullet to convey my unity with St. Edwards hall and raise awareness for the pressing issue that Malaria is… as well as back off malaria!

St. Ed: On the eve of battle, are you and the others getting a little nervous about getting mullets and heading off to the front?

Kalicak: It’s been almost SIX months of growth so leaving the locks behind is somber. However,  together I think we can be brave and in the process help stomp out malaria.  I hate malaria.

St. Ed: I don’t want you to divulge too much here and help the enemy, but how are we going to beat the malaria?

Kalicak: We're going inside of malaria. We're going outside of malaria-- inside of malaria! outside of malaria! -- and when we get them on the run once, we're going to keep malaria on the run. And we're not going to pass unless their secondary comes up too close. But don't forget, men -- we're gonna get malaria on the run, we're gonna go, go, go, go! -- and we aren't going to stop until we go over that goal line! And don't forget, men -- today is the day we're gonna win. They can't lick us -- and that's how it goes... The first platoon men -- go in there and fight, fight, fight, fight, fight! What do you say, men!

St. Ed: That sounds really familiar, and I like it. Sounds like a real plan for victory. Good luck!

Your Hall...

Verdeschi (R): Rallying the Boys for Old St. Ed

... needs you! Yes, St. Edward's needs every Gentleman to do his duty to Hall and King in this fight against malaria, and the Commander-in-Chief in this battle, Matt Verdeschi, making sure that happens. While the logistics for this Thursday's offensive, the mustering of hairstylists, distribution of frockets, and securing food supplies, are complete, Verdeschi is not letting his guard down. Rather, he's rallying the spirits of his fellow Stedsmen, who at this moment may be having second thoughts about joining the fight and heading off to the front. Indeed, nerves and anxiety are running high. After all, it's one thing to have long hair, but it is a completely different thing to have that long hair crafted into a mullet. Suffice it to say, on the eve of battle, encouragement from the Commander-in-Chief himself is strengthen the resolve and determination of Steds forces.

Seeing some young Stedsmen in the lobby, Verdeschi seized the moment saying, "Get a mullet, and prove the 80s mullet never went out of style!"

Hearing the Verdeschi's clarion, like a warrior poet of old, Michael Mitchell, freshman and Georgian, was moved and exclaimed, "Six months, my hair did grow, To create this lengthy flow. A mullet, time to stun. Put malaria on the run. For this, these locks must go."

Struck by the same words, Robert Cline, freshman and Californian, said, "Growing a head of lettuce with my fellow Stedsmen has been nothing short of amazing. It’s been really encouraging to see a group of guys put aside their clippers in the fight against Malaria. I couldn’t be more proud to have a little business in the front and some party in the back.”

Still, Kyle Bass, fellow freshman and North Carolinian, added, "Although COVID has taken away many Steds traditions that we hold near and dear, it can’t take away our ability to sport the finest hairstyle on campus. I can’t wait to be a part of the greatest hall fundraiser by fighting malaria with mullets alongside my fellow Stedsmen."

Finally, Will Dwortz, was also moved and shared, "I'm honestly excited to see who can really pull off the mullet. I figure there has to be at least one, but I have no clue who it'll be. But still, we're all going to beat malaria!"

As our brave boys fight malaria, may their courage move us to join them and do our part in this battle. Let's give it to malaria, and bring our boys- and their hairstyles- back!

A snowy wonderland

... from Notre Dame. Winter's grip of snow, ice and bitter wind, is finally easing as warm temps are once again making an appearance at campus. Regularly below freezing, temperatures are finally climbing into the high 30's, even the low 40's. Still yet, the spirits of many are rising too as rising temps remind us all that spring cannot be that far off. Enjoy your Sunday wherever you may be!

Saturday Squirrel.

Trash or treasure: It's all good

While they relentlessly search here and there, high and low, over there and right here, our furry friends often end their searches empty pawed. But some times, just some times, they strike gold. And that's what happened for our furry friend as he hit the mother lode of peanuts outside Badin Hall. Whether buried treasure or someone's discarded trash, the peanut stash was just what was needed amid a very trying winter. Suffice it to say, it was a feast. On enjoying a feast amid the tundra of South Quad, this squirrel non-verbaled, "And they're lightly salted too... what more could you ask for?"

Reinforcements...

Coverstone: One mean and good looking malaria fighting machine

... have arrived. As Steds forces prepare for the start of Mullets Against Malaria (MAM), reinforcements arrived in the form of frockets. But these frockets are more than your ordinary frockets (shirts where on the front there is a pocket, hence fro-cket)... because these are MAM frockets! Designed by Kyle Rubin, at the direction of Commander in chief of Steds MAM forces, Matt Verdeschi, these frockets are exactly what the Stedsmen needed as they head off to front next week. Their clean design and handy pocket in the front communicates not only "back off" but also "we mean business" to the enemy, malaria. On doing his duty against malaria, Thomas Coverstone, Steds sophomore and resident Texan, shared, "A mullet beats the haircut my mom attempted during COVID, but fighting malaria is more important than any haircut!”

Something new...

In the Red Room: McKeon and Haag

... is being cooked up at Steds. There's a pandemic going on, and it's very cold outside. So, what better time to create something new for Steds? What's being whipped up? A Steds podcast! Yes, a Steds podcast, taped from the Red Room of Steds and in keeping with the University's Covid precautions, will enable listeners to hear from Stedsmen themselves. Found on the Hall's blog site, the podcast In The Red Room, hosted by Fr. Ralph and his AR, Pete McKeon, will dive into the life and times of the Stedsmen, bringing to you stories that make you laugh as well as touch the heart. On hearing of a new podcast, an unnamed friend of St. Ed said, "Joe Rogan is likely quaking in is boots right now in fear of losing his podcast's number one spot!"

In the Red Room will be available HERE very soon. Stay tuned!

What are the kids...

Steds Snow Football: No losers, just winners

... up to these days? Yes, what are they doing when they are not quarantining and isolating, studying, writing, or whatever else it might be? This is a timely question given all the restrictions in place preventing so many activities from happening, and then, if that weren't enough, through in sub-zero temperatures. Yes, what are they doing these days to past the time? Well, it appears that the Gentlemen are taking it all in stride, making lemonade out of the lemons that they have received thanks to the Covid, by taking advantage of the weather. With fresh snow on the ground, some of the Gentlemen decide to play a game of snow football on Ricci Fields. Cold for sure, but how could they not take advantage of all that fresh powder?! On playing snow football, and taking the big "L," Steve Sayles said, "Snow football builds character and teaches valuable lessons, such as: wear more than one layer of clothing when it’s 10° out, and don’t wear sneakers in the snow and expect to stay upright for more than 2 steps at a time."

They are...

Kremus and Glunz: Smiling and blushing under those masks

... loved! It's no surprise, but the Gentlemen are indeed loved. Oh, you could say that about everyone and everything here at Notre Dame, but at Steds, our rebuttal would be... but we have proof! Yes, we have quantitative and qualitative data that demonstrates beyond any doubt that Steds is loved in more ways than most. How is Steds loved? Let us count the ways? Wait, to make it easy, why don't we just show you the most recent proof. On this past Sunday, Valentine's Day, the Gentlemen woke up to discover that an admirer of theirs had left specialty Krispy Kreme Valentine's doughnut in Flounge. What says love more than doughnuts in the shape of hearts? I don't know... you tell me. On the Valentine's Day doughnuts, a gentleman, speaking on the condition of anonymity, said, "Love it! Our admirer really does know the way to our hearts!"

Your Sunday picture...

A beautiful sight in every season

... from Notre Dame. Temperatures continue to hover in the high teens and mid twenties, and the Lake Effect snow machine has been dumping a continual dusting of snow about campus... so winter is in full effect as students start their second full week of classes. Still, it makes for a unique campus, and if you can muster the courage to endure the cold, you will be reward with unique campus winterscapes. Enjoy this night view of snowing falling on Mary and the Dome. Enjoy your Sunday wherever you may be!

Saturday Squirrel.

Who would have thought... an igloo

Some times we are amazed by furry friends. Some times we are amazed by the other friends about campus... in the water, flying in the skies, roaming the walnuts groves. But some times, just some times, they are all amazed by us. That is certainly the case as an igloo- yes, an igloo- has made an appearance on God Quad. Constructed by over-energetic students after a recent snowfall, this igloo has become a curiosity not only other students but also our furry friends. While no squirrels have been seen going in, they have been seen to sniffing all around the main entrance. On being asked if he would enter, a furry friend non-verbaled, "In that igloo? After you!"

Everyone is...

Haag: Deploying to front

... doing his part in the upcoming war against malaria. Yes, everyone, and we mean everyone, including Fr. Ralph, is joining the fight.Yes, Fr. Ralph is joining the fight!Always at the Homefront, Fr. Ralph has never ventured off with the brave boys with their mullets to the front. But this year, it's going to be different. When we caught up with Fr. Ralph, here's what he had to say.

St.Ed: Is it true? Are you getting a mullet?

Haag: Yes. It's true. I am.

St.Ed: What moved you to join the boys at front with a mullet?

Haag: Their bravery. It is always edifying, and seeing it, I though to myself, "I can do this too."

St.Ed: When was the last time you had a haircut?

Haag: My last haircut was in early November, and then, it was only a little trim. You see, I started growing it out over the summer, and by November, it was getting a bit out of control. Okay, it was getting a lot out of control.

St.Ed: So, growing your hair out has its challenges?

Haag: Yes. I have been devoting more time to personal grooming than ever before. Every morning, I have severe "bed head," and while it might be stylish for the kids, it's not a look for a priest rector. I have to comb my hair, and if I don't, it gets all knotted up. And you know what? It hurts trying to get them out. And then I am using more shampoo... let's not even talk about that.

St.Ed: Is there anything that you would like our readers to know?

Haag: Yes, I regret that I have but one head of hair to give to our noble cause.

It will be...

It's on, and we're going to win!

... their finest moment. Yes, Steds forces are now mobilizing and preparing for the biggest showdown in the school year, the battle against malaria. Nothing is being held back because they're playing for keeps. The Stedsmen, with their mullets, will give it their all, and malaria doesn't have a prayer. The power of their mullets will overpower the enemy and bring about the victory that all the Gentlemen desire. To help bring this victory about, under the direction of Matt Verdeschi, general in this great battle, a shirt has been created to help draw attention to this noble cause. Designed by Kyle Rubin, the Mullets Against Malaria frocket, long sleeve shirt with a pocket in the front, will soon be distributed to Steds forces, rallying spirits and much more. On being the first to order his frocket, Jack Olmanson, Steds Senior and native Minnesotan, said, "Every year it’s a no brainer to buy the Mullets shirt. You help the kids, and get cool apparel. Truly a win-win."

Taking a break....

No Covid, just carting HERE

... from classes. With the first week of classes now over, and despite it being a shorten school week, a break was needed. And what better way to do that than having an impromptu Mario Cart tourney? That's exactly what happened this weekend. The Gentlemen put down their books and picked up their controllers and Mario carted the afternoon way. On the Covid compliant tourney, Joe Herlihy, Steds senior and Marylander, shared, "These Gentlemen came to the Flounge of an enjoyable Mario Cart tournament. But once the first blue shell was thrown, all bets were off. As competition raged, the temperature surrounding St. Edward’s rose a full degree and brought the men ever closer.”

A special delivery...

Chick-Fil-A: Medicine for the psyche and soul

... for Stedsmen. As classes started for all matriculating students this past week so did quarantining and isolation. Sadly, some Stedsmen are already in quarantine. After returning and pre-matriculating testing, some Stedsmen needed to be placed in quarantine. Unfortunately, a long Christmas Break and separation from friends and Notre Dame's oldest and most storied residence hall just got a bit longer. Yes, they were HERE... but now they are not. They were going to be in class... but now they are not. They're were so many things... but now they are, well, on hold and elsewhere. But fear not, for they are not forgotten! With the help of the local Chick-Fil-A, a mission of mercy was launched from Steds to those in lock down. A tasty lunch was delivered to all quarantined Stedsmen, raising hopes and buoying waning spirits. On receiving a Chick-Fil-A lunch, an unnamed Stedsman said, "In my darkest hour, I was saved, by the grace of God and His greatest gift to mankind: the Chick-Fil-A spicy chicken sandwich!"

It was a super...

Winner of Super Bowl LV: America and Steds

... Super Bowl. Just when they said it couldn't happen, it happened. Yes, the Super Bowl got more super when not only pizza arrived but also Amish cookies (thanks to generous donor). Of course, everything was for individual consumption... no Covid here! So, regardless of whether one was for the Chiefs or for the Buccaneers, all Stedsmen were treated to a personal Super Bowl feast, excusing them from battling the subzero temperatures and the masses at the dining hall. Could any Stedsman ask for anything more? I think not! Well, okay... a good game. Still, you get the point. On the super Super Bowl and the surprise Amish cookies, Sam Miller, Steds sophomore, Bengal bouter, and Floridian via Ohio, said, "The only time I’ve seen Peter Ferraro experience the purest form of joy is when he ate half a dozen Amish cookies at 1 am.” w if this will suffice hahaha

Saturday's squirrel.

It's just too cold

Winter has a firm grip on campus, and with more snow and colder temps predicted, that grip is only going to get tighter. It's cold, and everyone, even our furry friends, is suffering. While walking about God Quad, this squirrel was spotted, and what was odd about this furry friend was that he didn't approach for a hand out. Instead, he just stood there. But upon a closer look, it became clear as to why that was. His paws were cold! On the cold, this squirrel non-verbaled, "When will this end?"

Yet another...

Stay inside, really

... surprise. If the new tents were not enough, then the surprise snow storm was. One minute it was bright sunshine, then suddenly, it was a blinding snow storm. When all said and done, three inches of snow fell, but so did the temps. So precipitous was the drop that the heavy, wet snow quickly turned into a dangerous ice overnight. Unfortunately, the sub-zero temps, snow, and gale force winds will continue into next week. On the recent Arctic blast, Jack Kalicak, Steds freshman and native Floridan, shared, "It wan't bad walking to the Bookstore, but when I returned to Steds, walking into the wind, it was just disgusting."

Thursday, February 4, 2021

There's something new...

Crystal palace: students on display...

... on North Quad. A new structure is going up in between Breen Philips and Cavanaugh Halls. A new tent? It is, but there is something different about this tent. What's different? This tent will actually have windows. Matter of fact, all the walls will be ALL glass windows. Yes, that's right... ALL windows. In a very real way, Notre Dame will soon have its own "crystal palace." How Victorian. Still, this new window filled tent is so badly needed especially so when the other tent on North Quad has no windows and resembles an abattoir from an 80's horror movie. In the end, the crystal palace will give students one more venue to spread out and congregate in a Covid free way. On the new tent, Shane Dilbeck, Steds junior and resident Californian said, "Oh ye tents of glass precariously placed throughout Our Lady’s University. You tarp covered, wood lined 'indoor outdoor' habitats for hungering minds. How strange you look, but how useful you are. A place to come together, six feet apart, whilst sheltered from the cold. The strangeness of your shape and structure is clear, but the value that you add in this most precarious time is even clearer."

... or all out of sight.

It's the first day...

Rubin: He's done it again...

... of classes, but who's thinking of class? Yes, Christmas Break was long and a bit too good, and so, it's difficult getting back into the swing of things. It's true! Waking up early, making the morning commute to class in freezing temps, and navigating the dining hall and outdoor tents, now called "lodges", are all things our Stedsmen are reacquainting themselves with. Again, it may be the first day of class, but who's really thinking of classes? Some are, but certainly not all, especially those Stedsmen who are hoping for an inter-hall hockey season. And in a move that could not have been planned any better, the new Hall hockey jerseys, designed by Kyle Rubin, Steds junior and design genius, arrived TODAY- the first day of class. Ironic or a sign from God? The answer is clear. On the first day of classes, Westin Mulqueen, Steds junior and resident Texan, shared, “Although I tried so hard to focus on the first day of school, I kept drifting to shredding the ice with the men of St. Edward’s Hall in our new snazzy hockey jerseys. I didn’t come to play school, I came to play intramural hockey.”

... but can we win a game now?

Let the good times...

Weighing in: McKeon and Cook

... stop! Yes, let the good times stop unless we all starting rolling about! Indeed, the times have been good over the Christmas Break with great home cooked meals and Christmas goodies. So good have the times been that, well, a few pounds have been racked up by our Stedsmen. Surprising? No not really. But what was surprising was the sudden weight loss by the Stedsmen when the they weighed themselves using the Hall's gym scale upon their return. Ten, even twenty, pounds appeared to evaporate into the thin air. Too good to be true? Yes. Sadly, the gym scale was malfunctioning. Thankfully, a new scale was procured, and well, the real damage of the break could be accurately assessed. On the new gym scale, Ben Cook, Steds senior and native Californian, said, "Finally, we can all see exactly how much Covid and Christmas weight we’ve gained. And it's conveniently located in the gym, where we can work to lose it” while Assistant Rector, Nate McKeon, shared, "Upon returning from a long, calorie-filled break, we all appreciate the new state of the art scale. It's a gentle reminder that we may, in fact, want to wear pants without an elastic waistband at some point this semester.”
