Marini: Michelin star rated

... at Ed's? As the favorite campus residence hall eatery, Ed's, remains closed for the year, it is now open to any and all gentlemen who would like to have the proverbial old college go. Throughout the day, various smells of culinary delights- as well as near delights- waff down the first floor corridor. Recently, a curious but a most delicious smell, was smelled as Luca Marini was in the midst of whipping up "just a little something." Whatever it was, it smelled so fantastic, it made you wish you were invited to dinner! On what's on for dinner, Marini shared, "It's not always easy, but a Stedsman always makes it work. Pasta all’amatriciana for you all...next time!”

The biggest night...

Cook: Moving on up to the east side...

... at St. Ed's. Yes, the biggest night at St. Ed's is Room Picks Night. Every returning Stedsmen has the opportunity to pick his room for the upcoming year. How does this happen? Arm wrestling? Staring contests? Feats of strengths? No. Lottery pick numbers. Thanks to an algorithm at the Office of Housing, randomly generated lottery list are produced, giving each resident a number... and picks are based off that number. Rising seniors go first, followed by rising juniors, and then, last but not least, rising sophomores were at the end. Again, regardless of one's lottery number, everyone's a winner... because every room at Steds is better than any and all rooms elsewhere on campus! But... there had to be a gentleman who would get to go first in this excitement filled evening and this honor fell to James Cook. 

On being first to select a room, this rising senior, resident Californian, and new manager of Ed's for next year, shared, "When I learned that I would have the first room pick, I was honored and humbled. Participating in the hallowed rituals of room selection is a privilege that I will remember for all my life. 

This is an achievement that I could not have done alone; there are so many people that I would like to thank. I would like to thank not only God, but also Jesus, St. Edward, the big man himself, Fr. Ralph and the Hall staff for their fearless leadership, all those who donated for ND Day for their generosity, my fellow genteel Stedsmen, my house plants, and last but not least, my parents—Look ma! I made it! 

The experience was one that I will truly relish. I don’t want to be presumptuous and say that history was made, but I would certainly not be surprised if this year’s room picks was featured in all the textbooks."

What room did Cook choose? A room that the rector would love to make his office! Room 301, a single with windows on the east and south sides of the room... what more could you ask for?!

Steds golfing legends

... again. Steds just can't, or rather won't, take a back seat. First, it was putting Sorin in its place during the inter-hall Olympics. Next, it was going at least ten furlongs ahead of every other residence hall on ND Day (now called St Edward's Day). Now, it's taking 1st place in the inter-hall golf scramble. The Steds foursome of Patrick Magner, Tommy Huber, Alex Morrison, and former President Peter Nichols, clinched fame, glory, and the trophy of the RecSports Golf Scramble. Still yet, they have become immortalized as Steds golfing legends. Later, at a ceremony devoid of any pomp and circumstance, each player will get the coveted Recsports champions' t-shirt... a treasure to say the least. On the win, Patrick Magner, Steds senior and now Recsports champion, shared, "The win was great but the camaraderie was even greater."

Saturday Squirrel.

One happy squirrel

Spring time weather is here, and people are out and about campus. While people are enjoying the sun and grass of the various quads, our furry friends are enjoying the times too but for a completely different reason. Why are they happy? Because with more people out and about, there are more opportunities for hand outs. And that is certainly what this squirrel is enjoying... a handout. On enjoying a free cashew, this squirrel non-verbaled, "Thank you!"

Celebrate they...

Balling it up outside...

... did. The Gentlemen did much celebrating this past Wednesday as they celebrated not one BUT two milestones- ND Day, also known as St Edward's Day, and the return of the Steds basketball hoop. With Steds Hall President Michael Lynch suspending classes by an executive order, just as Fr. John Jenkins had done, the Stedsmen had the entire day to celebrate. There were pick up basketball games outside with the Steds hoop which culminated in a tourney of sorts. If basketball was your cup of tea, then perhaps video game are. So, there was a Smash Cart tourney in the Flounge. And if basketball or Smash Cart were not your speed, then there was a corn hole tourney. Enveloping all of this was food- Chick Fil A regular and spicy sandwiches and Raising Cane's... topped off by an assortment of Insomnia Cookies. On the Steds celebrations inside and outside, Ben Theis, sophomore and Steds Hall Vice-President, said, "It was a good day to be a Gentleman of Notre Dame's oldest and most storied residence hall!"

... all while enjoying cookies... but there's more...

BUT THERE'S MORE...

Sadly, not every Gentleman could be present for the celebrations. Unfortunately, some Gentlemen were in quarantine and isolation is some far off, cush, but lonely, place. But these Gentlemen were not forgotten! On being remembered, a gentleman said, "We celebrated too. Spice was served to the Suites today, specifically Embassy Suites. St. Edward served this spice in the form of a beautiful Spicy Thai Chicken Bowl. This meal warmed me and provided me with an awakening of my senses that have become dormant in the isolation of quarantine Thanks Steds!"

Who is...

Chapple: Keeping the laughs coming 

... the man who brings us good news AND weather every week on the Steds podcast In the Red Room? We know his voice, but who really IS this Josh Chapple? Here's what we learned about this mystery man when we caught up with him when he wasn't in the Red Room. Here's Josh Chapple... the senior, the Virginian, the man who brings us good news AND weather in the Red Room!

St.Ed: So, how did you become the deliverer of good news and weather in this brave and bold endeavor called, In the Red Room?

Chapple: I still remember the day I received my call to arms like it was yesterday, February 17, 2021. It felt like I was an aspiring young actor who got his first call back. I was overjoyed. It was both an honor and intimidating to be brought in on the ground floor of something so experimental. It was a blessing to be able to take so many artistic liberties and, at times, risks to make the segment my own, but the greater blessing has been the listeners bringing me back.

St.Ed: Now, I think it is safe to say our hosts, Fr Ralph and Pete, have faces for radio, but you, well, you have a voice for radio. Did you take lessons to get that Charleton Heston voice?

Chapple: I wish I could say lessons alone could give me my voice. I adhere to a strict pre-show regimen consisting of two shots of honey followed by one shot of lemon juice followed by one hot cup of water to soothe my cords. I also no longer enjoy the luxury of drinking dairy.

St.Ed: Now, every time I hear you, it sounds like you’re having fun in the red room. Is it really as fun in there as it sounds?

Chapple: At times, it is not all fun and games like it sounds. Pete and Father are two strict professionals that take the taping quite seriously. We often end up In the Red Room for hours after analyzing our recording back. That being said, every tear I’ve shed and every laugh I’ve laughed have been completely genuine on the show.

St.Ed: How are you dealing with the stardom? Out of nowhere, you rocketed into the hearts of so many listeners. How do you keep it from going all to your head?

Chapple: The looks, the giggles, the turning of heards. I had never been noticed much before and the initial attention was intoxicating. I just thank God Father helped to keep me grounded in reality before I turned to the lifestyle that so many young Disney actors fall victim to.

St.Ed: Do you have any good news and weather for us right now?

Chapple: Over my strenuous 22 years, I have learned that there is always good news to be found and weather outside. The greatest news of all is that the show goes on and we’ll be back In the Red Room soon with more stories, good news, and weather!

St.Ed: Now, that is good news!

It's back...

Gonzalo: Dreams do come true

... for good! Yes, a very dear friend has returned to Steds after a very long hiatus. It's not a matter "who" as much as it is "what." Yes, "what" we're talking about is the return of the Steds basketball hoop! At the beginning of the pandemic, the basketball hoop was removed to prevent the spread of the Covid. Yes, one day, without any warning, they came and took it away. Sad day indeed, and suddenly, our beautiful basketball hoop, the envy of all men's halls, found itself anything but that. It became Simon without Garfunkel... a Cagney without Lacey... a M without another M. BUT... with Fr. John Jenkin's announcement, that the student population had reached its target vaccination rate of ninety percent, some COVID restrictions, including the prohibition on basketball hoops, would be lifted! And just as the old friend had suddenly disappeared, it suddenly reappeared, and there was great rejoicing. On the return of the old friend, Brian Gonzalo, Steds sophomore and baller, said, "I woke up this morning thinking it’s a great day to have a great day. Then I walked outside and saw the most beautiful thing. She was bright orange with beautiful curly hair, hanging low. I no longer had to think about having a great day because it was already the greatest day.... I had met my match and there she was out in the Steds driveway."

St. Ed's Day it...

This is NOT a mistake!

... was! Yes, thank you for making this ND Day, St. Ed's Day! Thank you to all Alumni, moms and dads, brothers and sisters, aunts and uncles, cousins of whatever degree, grand and godparents, friends, Saturday’s squirrels, pets, and all people of good will! Yes, THANK YOU for your support this ND Day!

It is because of YOU that we are once again the #1 residence hall this ND Day, the ND Day that really counts this year!

Yes, because of you, Steds rocketed past other residence halls earlier on and zoomed to astonishing heights never seen before. In the end, the numbers tell it all... that when there is an opportunity to help the oldest and most storied residence hall at Notre Dame, everyone rallies for Hall and King!

On St. Ed's ND Day finish, Nico Dinglasa, Steds freshman and resident Indianan, shared, "When I saw the results, I said to myself, 'what the heck?' I couldn't believe how far ahead Steds was from all the others. Our donors really pulled through... thank you!"

Still, on the ND Day results, Ryan Kim '12, said, "Virginia is for lovers, and ND Day is for kids!"

Finally, Fr. Ralph added, “I am usually never at a loss for words, but I was dumbfounded by the final results and subsequently left speechless. I am humbled by what all of you made crystal clear this past Monday night- the love for this small but very special place, St. Ed's, is alive and well AND more than you can imagine! THANK YOU!"

Gallagher: Make it a slam dunk for Steds!

 ... and more! Wherever they may be, the kids are hoping it will be a big day for Notre Dame's oldest and most storied residence hall. It's been a long and tough year, so, a successful ND Day will go a LONG way to making next year so great a year that this pandemic mess is a forgotten memory. Excitement and much anticipation is in the hallways of Steds. One such gentleman is Tommy Gallagher, Steds sophomore and 2nd floor resident and native Indianan. On what he's hoping for with the funds raised for ND Day, Gallagher said, "For ND Day I’m hoping that we can get lots of donations so we can continue to show everyone that we’re the best Hall on campus and... so we can have more Portillo’s maybe? You can never go wrong with Portillo's.”

Even as the Hall is preparing for ND Day, there is another big day on the horizon... Room Picks Night. On the Thursday after ND Day, every Gentlemen will pick their new room for the next semester. Gathering in the Flounge and selecting by lottery numbers, every Gentlemen will have the opportunity to select the room of his dreams at St. Ed's. But before Room Picks Night, the posting of lottery numbers and maps of available rooms is a BIG event, and that's what John Swift, 3rd floor RA, and Fr. Ralph did this past Thursday. On the posting of lottery numbers and maps in the Flounge and the lobby, Fr. Ralph said, "Who cares what your number is?! In this lottery, everyone is a winner because you're selecting a room at Steds!"

 ... and more! The kids, in the Hall AND those in quarantine and isolation (Q/I), are hoping it will be a big day for Notre Dame's oldest and most storied residence hall. It's been a long and tough year, so, a successful ND Day will go a LONG way to making next year so great a year that this pandemic mess is a forgotten memory. Excitement and much anticipation is in the hallways of Steds. One such gentleman is Mike Jekot, Steds freshman and 1st floor resident and newly elected Hall senator. On what he's hoping for with the funds raised for ND Day, Jekot said, "To update the appliances in the Flounge and Sky Lounge... a new microwave and TV would make away football games a bit more fun."

Even though some of our Gentlemen are in Q/I, they are not forgotten. Without doubt, separation from Steds, friends, and routines can take a real toll. But what can make a stint in Q/I more palatable? Food- good food- of course! During his stay in quarantine, an unnamed Gentleman had a hankering for something other than the food dropped off by the University. Too big of a request? Perish the thought. Enter St. Ed... who arrange a special delivery. On receiving something more to his likening, our unnamed Stedsman shared, "After too many roast beef sandwiches to count, a gift from the good ole’ St. Ed was a welcome and wonderful sight to see!"

ND Day...

Dahnke: Thumbs up for excellence 

... is almost HERE, and the kids are hoping that it will be a big day for Notre Dame's oldest and most storied residence hall. It's been a long and tough year, so, a successful ND Day will go a LONG way to making next year so great a year that this pandemic mess is a forgotten memory. Excitement and much anticipation is in the hallways of Steds. One such gentleman is Ryan Dahnke, Steds sophomore and 4th floor resident. On what he's hoping for with the funds raised for ND Day, Dahnke said, "A spa in the billiards room and a rooftop garden. When I think ND Day, I think "Steds excellence" and what better captures our excellence than our very own spa and rooftop garden?!"

For the kids!

... in a nutshell. Indeed, it can be confusing as they change the rules. Still, in an effort to help explain the who, what, when, where, and why of ND Day 2021, we had an opportunity to the speak with the man himself, St. Ed. Here is what he had to say...

What is Notre Dame Day?

Notre Dame Day is the day of celebrating Notre Dame’s mission, a day that engages, informs, and inspires people to take action to further the mission of the University. We hope that you tune in, take action, vote and help the great work of Notre Dame’s OLDEST AND MOST STORIED RESIDENCE  HALL- ST.EDWARD’S HALL.

Why is it important that you give?

Because the University has a HALF MILLION DOLLARS in challenge funds available to distribute among its residence halls and its various clubs, organizations, centers, and colleges. The amount St. Edward’s will receive depends on how many people we get to rally to our cause on ND Day.

 

How does St. Edward’s get votes and a slice of that half million dollar pie?

By getting donors to give $10 to St. Ed’s. That’s all it takes. If someone wants to give more than $10, then  that’s great… but it doesn’t give an advantage when distributing the half million challenge fund. Still, ALL money given goes directly to the Hall.    

 

Who can participate?

ANYONE... We need you, your parents, your family members, your friends, your high school teachers, and your pets to donate to St. Ed's. We need you to encourage your roommates and your dormmates to reach out to their network. SO ENCOURAGE ANY AND EVERYONE TO SELECT ST. EDWARD”S

Johnson: Thumbs up for ND Day!

... is almost HERE, and the kids are hoping that it will be a big day for Notre Dame's oldest and most storied residence hall. It's been a long and tough year with a lot of can'ts, restrictions, and cancellations. So, a successful ND Day will go a LONG way to making next year so great a year that this year is a  forgotten memory. Indeed, excitement is in the air at Steds, and there is much anticipation amongst the kids. One excited gentleman is Ryan Johnson, Steds freshman and resident Georgian. On what he's hoping for with the funds raised for ND Day, Johnson said, "I'd love if we could use get a food truck and have a cornhole event! My aim is improving. I know the Gentlemen of St. Edward's Hall love their food trucks and their corn hole!"

ND Day...

Lynch: Not joking around...

... is coming, and the new St. Ed's Hall Government is mobilizing efforts to make it a success. Now, some may be thinking, "Wait, ND Day already happened in the fall." Indeed, it did, but that was a makeup ND Day for the spring ND Day 2020 that was postponed because of the Covid. THIS ND Day is the real deal... with a challenge fund of half a million dollars. More on that later, but for now, it is important to know that Steds is playing for keeps. When we caught up with the new Hall President, Michael Lynch, here is what he had to say about this important day.

StEd: Is ND Day really that important to Steds?

Lynch: Yes! ND Day is extremely important to Steds! We have historically done very well on ND Day and have had the funds to provide for the Hall. We rely on these funds for a variety of reasons, from everyday activities to bigger improvements. ND Day gives Steds the ability to further enhance community and continue tradition.

StEd: I thought ND Day happened in the fall of last year? Why should we participate now?

Lynch: ND Day last fall was a makeup for the lost ND Day in the spring of 2020. Covid has greatly affected ND Day; we have not had a true one in about 2 years. Therefore, this year is crucial for helping the Hall. We have a full ND Day ahead of us, including the all-important challenge fund. We need your participation now! Each donation will go directly to the Hall and will give us a larger stake of the challenge fund.

StEd: What will the Hall do with ND Day funds?

Lynch: The Hall will use the funds for the betterment of the Steds community. We will host events that bring us together. We will make improvements to common areas that enhance Hall life. Most importantly, we will listen to the Gentlemen and respond to their suggestions and requests accordingly.

StEd: What do we need to bring about a Steds victory on ND Day?

Lynch: We need you, your family, your friends, your neighbors, your pets, and your neighbors' pets to donate to Steds. Steds is relying on your support to bring victory to the Hall!

StEd: What do you think your lottery number for picking a room at Steds will be for the upcoming  room picks night?

Lynch: I hope to be as lucky as last year!

Still, springs colors can be found in the some of most overlooked places. And that's certainly the case with these flowers spotted outside Fisher Hall in an unkept portion of their front yard. Sunday Picture...

God, Country, Notre Dame.

...from Notre Dame. Here's the iconic "God, Country, Notre Dame" doorway of the Basilica. Located on the east side of the Basilica and flanked by Sts. Joan of Arc and Michael, the doorway commemorates the forty-six ND students who died in World War I. Walk through the doorway, and you will see their names along with Fr. O'Donnell's C.S.C.'s helmet hanging as the light fixture in the Basilica's War Memorial entrance. Enjoy your Sunday wherever you may be!

Do you see...

I see you!

... what I see? If you look closely, you can see the newest resident on God Quad who has taken up residence at the Dome. Who is it? It's our peregrine falcon. Often heard in the early morning and evening, the falcon is rarely spotted. But thanks to a great deal of determination, our new neighbor was recently tracked down and spotted at the base of the Dome. But the question is what does he see? Yes, from that vantage point, what do you see on the horizon our fine, feathered falcon? On what he sees, our falcon said, "I see ND Day!"

Yes, ND Day is fast approaching! On April 18th & 19th, St. Edward's and its Gentlemen will be counting on you to help make this ND Day a day to remember for Notre Dame's oldest and most storied residence hall. For those who are unaware, ND Day is a day where anyone and everyone can donate and vote for what matters most to them at ND. Last semester there was a make up ND Day, but now, it’s the REAL DEAL. So, mark your calendars!

In the last real ND Day, St. Edward's was the number one residence hall in voting, and we hope it will be the same for this year! Without ND Day, St. Ed's just wouldn't be St. Ed's! And that's why we need every mom, father, brother, sister, aunt, uncle, grandma, grandpa, every person of good will, even every pet, and honestly, every peregrine falcon, to vote for St. Ed's on ND Day.

Spring is in...

A lot going on HERE

... the air, literally and figuratively. That was certainly the case when taking a trip around South Quad and inspecting the bushes outside of Alumni Hall. While the bushes had a fresh green look about them, there was something else to be seen. And what was this something else? Pollen, of course! On pollen in the air, Steds junior and resident Chicagoan, Konrad Rozanski, said, "Spring, a blessing and a curse."

Easter Monday...

Portillo's on the patio

... is normally a day off, but with the Covid, it's not. Still, Steds once again found a way to make lemonade out of pandemic lemons and had Portillo's of Chicago delivered. Yes, at Plaza St. Edward's, the Gentlemen enjoyed camaraderie, great weather, and great food... and yes, there was chocolate cake too. And suddenly, a Monday with classes become a whole lot more bearable. On this Easter Monday surprise, Nate McKeon, Steds AR, said, "No more Lenten fasting HERE. Supplied with all of the pieces of a classic Italian meal, the men enjoyed outdoor activities, righteous tunes, and most importantly, each other’s company. The Portillo’s feast of biblical proportions reinvigorated the spirits of the men, who are now ready to tackle anything the semester has to throw at them."
