VM DAY!

Tompkins and Storch: A winning team

President Aidan Tompkins received Steds Mullet Commander, Dane Storch, in the Gregorian Lounge where a briefing was held discussion the state of the war against malaria. Following that briefing, Storch gave the order to for all mullets forces to stand down and cease operations as of 1030hours. And as sign of the Hall's gratitude for a successful campaign, Storch was promoted to General of Steds Mullet Forces. On General Storch’s successful campaign, Tompkins said,"It is my distinguished honor to promote Commander Dane Storch to the rank of general. His diligence and unwavering resolve in our battle against malaria demonstrates why he is one of the greatest generals of our time. I am glad he's on our side!"

With the order to demobilize, the boys are returning home, but our fight is not over, the war will go on! Indeed, the enemy will see our brave boys and their powerful, magnificent mullets again, again, again… until that day when it vanquished once and for all.  But for now, it’s back to the Steds barracks for some R&R and most importantly, a haircut!

We THANK those who gave their follicles for the fight, but we also must give thanks to all those who joined us in this fight, monitoring our progress, buoying our spirits, making donations, all of which made this campaign a RESOUNDING SUCCESS, raising $18,363. Whether or not we donned a mullet, today's victory is something that we can all be proud of and celebrate! Take that malaria!

It's still on!

Lee and Sasso: Malaria's Biggest Nightmare

Yes, the war is still on going, and our brave boys and their mullets are pushing deep into enemy territory. While things may be going their way, we still want to continue highlighting our Gentlemen and their mullets. In this series, we try to show the softer side of our brave boys. Sometimes we forget, that behind that powerful and awesome mullet, is a gentleman, who like Winston Churchill, "likes the smell of powder but hates war." Here are two of those brave gentlemen, who for King and Hall, got a mullet and went off to the front lines to battle the enemy with every follicle of their being, Henry Lee and Andrew Sasso. Before heading off, these freshmen of St. Ed's shared some thoughts on their mullets... for the blog AND for the podcast. YES! That's right. After reading the interview, scroll to the bottom and click on the link to listen!

Everyone's favorite ND podcast, In the Red Room, has returned. Scroll down to the bottom.

St. Ed: How do you feel having a mullet? Was it worth the wait?

Lee: The mullet definitely makes me feel a new kind of power to where I can do anything I set my mind to.

Sasso: It feels amazing. The flow hold some sort of power that can’t be explained, but you can feel its presence.

St. Ed: How does your mom feel about you sporting a mullet?

Lee: My mom thinks it is interesting to say the least but she understands the worthiness of the cause.

Sasso: Although I thought she would be against the mullet, she actually doesn’t mind it. I’m sure she realizes the fantastic cause behind this fantastic haircut.

St. Ed: Does your mullet have a name?

Lee: Essence of Freedom

Sasso: Coming from New Jersey, I had to name this bad boy the “Jersey Devil.” It is the perfect representation of the mullet’s mysterious power.

St. Ed: What do you think your mullet communicates?

Lee: It communicates that we stand as one against malaria, and other diseases need to start watching out.

Sasso: First and foremost, my mullet communicates my strong support for defeating malaria, but it also lets everyone know that I hail from the best dorm on campus.

Your Sunday picture...

... from Notre Dame. While the war against malaria continues, we cannot overlook the other happenings about campus. Thoughts of a mild winter here at Notre Dame suddenly got buried by a couple of inches of snow and cold temps. Oh, the white blanket of snow beautiful covered campus, but it is a visible reminder that we are in winter, and well, there's more of winter to come. Still, let's enjoy the beauty of the season. Enjoy, and enjoy your Sunday wherever you may be!

A Gentleman and...

Back off: Kelly and the Enforcer

... his mullet. In this series, we try to show the softer side of our brave boys. Sometimes we forget, that behind that powerful and awesome mullet, is a gentleman, who like Winston Churchill, "likes the smell of powder but hates war." Here is a one of those brave gentleman, who for King and Hall, got a mullet and went off to the front lines to battle the enemy with every follicle of his being, Tommy Kelly. Before heading off, this resident New Yorker and freshman of St. Ed's shared some thoughts on his mullet.

St. Ed: How do you feel having a mullet? Was it worth the wait?

Kelly: It is not the greatest look in the world, but having a mullet right now is great. There is not a better feeling than seeing one of my Steds brethren around campus sporting a mullet. It is for a great cause and it helps make the St. Edward’s Hall community even better.

St. Ed: How does your mom feel about you sporting a mullet?

Kelly: My mother is not a huge fan of my mullet. That being said, at the end of the day… it’s for the kids.

St. Ed: Does your mullet have a name?

Kelly: My mullet’s name is “the enforcer.” That name sets the tone for what my mullet represents. Malaria fears my mullet.

St. Ed: What do you think your mullet communicates?

Kelly: My mullet communicates that I am a member of the greatest (and oldest) hall on campus. For Hall and King!

A Gentleman and...

Carroll: fighting, and smiling, always

... his mullet. In this series, we try to show the softer side of our brave boys. Sometimes we forget, that behind that powerful and awesome mullet, is a gentleman, who like Winston Churchill, "likes the smell of powder but hates war." Here is a one of those brave gentleman, who for King and Hall, got a mullet and went off to the front lines to battle the enemy with every follicle of his being, PJ Carroll. Before heading off, this resident Michigander and sophomore of St. Ed's shared some thoughts on his mullet.

St. Ed: How do you feel having a mullet? Was it worth the wait?

Carroll: I feel like I look, and I’m hoping that’s good. It’s always worth it to wait MAM because I know I have a group with me to simultaneously fight malaria and bring back the eighties.

St. Ed: How does your mom feel about you sporting a mullet?

Carroll: Thankfully, my mom likes it better than my previous haircut, which closely resembled a permed sheep dog.

St. Ed: Does your mullet have a name?

Carroll: Gravity’s Rainbow. I know it’s a novel, and no I haven’t read it but  it sure sounds cool.

St. Ed: What do you think your mullet communicates?

Carroll: I’d like to think it communicates peace and love. Unless you’re a mosquito, who cower in its presence.

A Gentleman and...

O'Neill and his mullet: Fr. Sorin would have liked it

... his mullet. In this series, we try to show the softer side of our brave boys. Sometimes we forget, that behind that powerful and awesome mullet, is a gentleman, who like Winston Churchill, "likes the smell of powder but hates war." Here is a one of those brave gentleman, who for King and Hall, got a mullet and went off to the front lines to battle the enemy with every follicle of his being, Jackson O'Neill. Before heading off, this resident Wisconsinite and freshman of St. Ed's shared some thoughts on his mullet and joining his fellow Gentlemen in this campaign against malaria.

St. Ed: Now that you have your long awaited mullet, how do you feel? Was it worth the wait?

O’Neill: I feel more aerodynamic, I think I walk a bit faster, and I definitely think more clearly. It was most definitely worth the months of hair in my face and the added weight to look this good.

St. Ed: How does your mom feel about you sporting a mullet?

O’Neill: I think my mom liked many things from the 80s like Def Leppard, but I think she was a-ok with the mullet staying in the past.

St. Ed: Does your mullet have a name?

O’Neill: My mullet does not have a name, but I guess I am taking suggestions. Thoughts?

St. Ed: Ah, yes! But I'll leave that work to you. Still, what do you think your mullet communicates?

O’Neill: I think the mullet gives the impression of a bunch of guys doing something silly but for a real purpose which makes it pretty fun.

To war!

Mullets Commissioner Dane Storch: Leading the way!

The Gentlemen are off to war! After receiving their mullets, racing stripes, or both, our brave Gentlemen are now off at the front lines, battling the enemy- malaria. This year, X Gentlemen answered the call to put on and rock out THE hairstyle of the 80's all in the hopes that people could live malaria free. The espirit de corp is palpable, nay tangible, and if I were malaria, I would be afraid because these spirited boys aren’t stop with a victory against malaria. They’re pushing on and taking out ebola too! On getting a mullet, Fr. Ralph said, "I only regret that I have but head of hair to give to Mullets Against Malaria."

Rallying the...

Holden: Plain and simple- Get a mullet Sasso!

...Gentlemen is the order of the day, the day before Mullets Against Malaria (MAM). Determined to defeat malaria, Steds is swinging into action under the direction of Commissioner Storch. But every Gentlemen is doing his part for King and Hall to ensure a swift and decisive victory over the enemy, malaria. Recently, Holden Welter was spotted in the lobby do his part to recruit everyone who has a follicle to cut to join the battle. Running into freshman Andrew Sasso, Holden's directions were clear... get a mullet. Suffice it to say, there is excitement and fanfare for this much anticipated moment of getting mullets, but yet, at the same time, quietly, there is a healthy amount of fear and trepidation among those heading off to the front with mullets, especially the freshmen. Questions of "What can a mullet really achieve?" and "Are my follicles really needed?" arise in minds of the inexperienced youth.

On getting a mullet, Sasso shared, "I’m beyond prepared to take part in this legendary tradition that has been a crucial part of the Steds culture for a decade I have let the hair grow out since August so that I can fully experience the power that comes with the beautifully sculpted Steds mullets. There’s nothing better than getting a great mullet for a great cause, and I’m excited to experience it with all my brothers!"

On having a new batch of recruits for the fight, Welter said, "These young recruits have been prepared to continue the tradition in helping others with our mullets, and they are ready to rock them proudly and with honor!"

Your Sunday picture...

Take it all in

... from Notre Dame. Sadly, the "permacloud", that permanent cloud cover over Northwest Indiana, is here, and it appears not be going anywhere quickly. Everyday, it is cloudy with the sky full of unbroken grey clouds. Never does the Sun break through and touch us with its rays. In all honesty, it's quite depressing, but you know, there are silver linings. Really. First, it's perfect weather for studying. Second, there are some beautiful sunrises. If you can get up early enough, you can see the Sun before it disappears. Enjoy this ND sunrise, and enjoy your Sunday wherever you may be!

Saturday's Squirrel.

Spotted! Hooded Mergansers

While our furry friends are extending their break beyond the official University's Christmas Break, other campus neighbors are filling in during their hiatus. Spotted at St Mary's Lake, they appeared to be common water fowl, but to the trained eye they were more than just your common duck. Who was spotted? Well, Hooded Mergansers. Startled, a pair of Hooded Mergansers, male (white headed) and female (brown headed) swam away quickly from low, overhanging brush by the shoreline, eventually diving into the lake and disappearing. This specie usually migrates, but given our unseasonable warm winter, this pair decided to stay. On being spotted, the white Hooded Merganser non-verbaled, well, nothing because he swam away. Pity.

Offices have...

Steds Salon: Folgers at Four

... water coolers, but Steds has the Gregorian (Greg). On Fridays, that's the place to be to hear the latest happenings of the Hall and University, even the world. From last night's offering at the dining hall to the happenings from Hollywood, from who burnt the popcorn in the microwave in Flounge to thoughts on monetary policy and inflation, you can hear it all and more over coffee and doughnuts in the Greg at Folgers at Four. And as the new semester is underway, Folgers at Four is under way too. Hosted by Steds Director of Academic Discernment (D.A.D.), Eoghan Fay, the Gentlemen were treated to Krispy Kreme doughnuts, a choice between light and bold coffee by Amazon, and a healthy dose of free thought and opinion. On returning to the Hall after his European vacation called "study abroad" and enjoying his first Folgers of the semester, Graham Lorenz, junior and resident Omahan, shared, "Today, I was reminded of the inherent ability of Steds Gentlemen to gather in intelligent and civil discourse on the happenings across the world… Folgers is always a, truly, noble event."

The secret...

Campbell: Doing his part for the war effort

... for any successful Mullets Against Malaria campaign are guts, follicles, and a sharp looking frocket. What's a frocket? A shirt with a pocket in the front of course. And this year's MAM frocket was designed by none other than Luke Bell, Steds senior and apparel commissioner. What muse inspired Bell to create this eye catching, couture frocket? Well, he's not telling, but what this frocket is telling everyone is "we're coming for you malaria!" Arriving just time, these frockets are now being distributed to all our brave boys who will be headed off to the front lines as well as those, like Patrick Campbell, who are keeping the home fires burning. Precluded from joining the battle because of ROTC hair regulations, Campbell is not sitting this one out.  On getting his frocket, Campbell shared, “Malaria has gone 108-0 in the regular season, but it didn’t account for one thing: Steds. An American loving bald eagle is the the ultimate trump card for our Gentlemen in this fight, and with it that eagle on our side, how could we lose?!"
