The A Team: Steds A Team 

... Steds! The victories for Steds sport teams continue roll on in. Recently, on the basketball courts of the JACC, Steds faced off against Morrissey Manor. Overcoming an early, crushing defeat, the Steds squad did not throw in the towel, but retooled and reformed, finding their feet as well as a spot in the first round of RecSports Intramural Playoffs. Lead by junior and Atlantan, Brian Gonzalo, Steds started off strong against Morrissey and never took the foot off the pedal, speeding off a victory with a score of 53 to 41. They now advance to the second round and will have a date with Duncan, the perennial top seed and the team that gave Steds the early loss.

On the game, John Sacris, sophomore and Chicagoan, shared, "We came off to a slow start missing a handful of threes; however, an electric three from Nick Haggestad served as the catalyst for a stellar run. A stifling press from Jacob Buckendorf and John Digenan, coupled with unstoppable offense from Brian Gonzalo and Michael Lynch, pushed our lead to 16. After the first half, the weary men of Morrissey Manor could not stage a comeback as we cruised to an easy 13 point win to advance to the second round of the playoffs.”

Fellow Chicagoan, John Digenan, added, “Steds took care of business in our first playoff game, and we now get the opportunity to play the number one seed in the entire tournament. If we win, we have the easiest road to winning it all.. and we fully intend to.”

Henry Bergstrom said, "Although they (Duncan) are heavy favorites, we’re not going to let this Cinderella run end easily. As a wise man once said, 'so you’re saying there’s a chance…'"

Saturday's Squirrel.

Morning stretching 

Our furry friends love putting on a show. Sometimes they chase their tails while at other times they chase the tails of their fellow furry friends. Still, at other times, they put on a show with the hopes of a hand out. But at other times, they break out something never seen before. That was certainly the case with this squirrel who happened to perch himself atop a bench one early morning. Perhaps he was waking up after a nap or maybe he was signaling he was giving up as winter got the better of him, but whatever it was, this squirrel's pose was most unique. What was he doing? On being spotted with his paws behind his head, this squirrel non-verbaled, "I am doing my morning exercises! What about you?!"

Studying abroad...

Paris today, but where tomorrow?

... and on vacation. We all know those studying abroad have rigorous and demanding schedule of classes, but some thing we may not know is that they also have rigorous schedule outside of the classroom. What are they doing outside the classroom? Learning of course... learning the train, bus, and Ryan Air plane schedules. And the Stedsmen studying abroad this semester had lesson in navigation as Steds in Rome and Steds in London converged on Paris. With Peter Ferraro and Gavin Shust coming from Rome and Luke Bell and Jack Ramsey traveling from London, a Steds reunion was held in Paris to take in the sights of the City of Lights but also to celebrate Jack Ramsey's birthday. On traveling in Europe, Ferraro shared, "It’s amazing how you can basically get anywhere in Europe within 2 hours… and for so little too!"

Project Refresh...

Foss: Enjoying the fruits of his labor...

... continues. Yes, the Stedsmen need their gainz, and gainz they will have! Under the tutelage of Paddy Foss, Steds AR and former NCAA Men Soccer Champion, and thanks to ND Day funds, the Stedsmen have seen various improvements and upgrades to their gym. First, it was a new treadmill. Next, it was a new exercise bike. But now, it's something else. It's a new weight machine. Arriving on the weekend in one large box, the machine was carried in by a small army of residents who broke the box down into small, manageable parts. When Foss returned, and with help from Vice President Ben Theis, the machine was assembled in an afternoon so that the gainz train could keep on rolling... and it's rolling! On the addition of the new weight machine, Foss said, "This cable machine complements our gainz train like a pristine cable car on the track to the promised land— tricep city, here we come."

A man...

Miller: Biking across the USA...

... on a mission. That's nothing new for Stedsman and medical student Chase Miller '21. During his days at Steds, he took on malaria, and now, he's taking on cancer. How? By cycling across the country! That's right, Miller is peddling from Maryland to California to give not only, as he says, some definition to his calf muscles but also some hope to suffering from cancer. As he peddles cross country, Miller will be raising money for the Ulman Foundation, a foundation that helps young adults diagnosed with cancer. To learn more about the Ulman Foundation, click here. Suffice it to say, this no small undertaking, but Miller has been preparing for some time. Matter of fact, some would say that Miller was getting ready for this challenge when he was at Steds, riding Lime Bikes with his fellow Stedsmen to St. Mary's. See below. Whatever is case, Miller needs our help! 

On his ride, Miller said, "A true Gentleman can not rest until he explores his country, and I’m biking 4,000+ miles this sumner with the Ulman Foundation to do it. In all seriousness, I’m a medical student who cares about helping people. If this Forrest Gump inspired challenge can help save lives down the road, every single mile will be worth it. And at the end of the day, Bruce Springsteen was born to run. I was born to ride. Help me change the world.”

Presidents' Day...

Hail to the Chiefs: Presidents Lynch and Nichols

... is a day that celebrates all those who have held the Office of the President of the United States, and while it is celebrated on the third Monday of February, it is officially celebrated on the birthday of the first president, George Washington. Regardless of the what day it is celebrated, it known by most as that day in February when the Post Office and banks are closed. Still yet, it is also known as a day when there are fantastic sales on mattresses. But regardless if you are celebrating this day by shopping for a mattress or by having a piece of cherry pie, it was an extra special day for Steds as two Hall Presidents gathered in the Steds gym. Former President Peter Nichols and current President Michael Lynch caused a stir as the two gathered in the gym for a summit of sorts of gainz and later, closed door conversations. But before they did, they posed for photos, sharing a sign of respect and unity for onlookers. On the "chance" meeting of the two,

Former President Nichols said, “Being in the public eye so much, let alone Presidents’ Day, forces me to stay in shape to make sure I have no bad angles for the paparazzi. Low and behold, I ‘found’ current President Lynch also working out in the gym! He informed me with the great news of the new gym equipment that would be installed later this week. Outstanding thinking by him with Spring Break and Yacht Dance right around the corner!”

President Lynch added, “It was an absolute honor and a pleasure to ‘run into’ former President Nichols on this very special day, Presidents’ Day. We were gifted with the warmest and prettiest day of the year so far, with the sun shining from sunrise to sunset. Despite the wonderful weather, both Peter and I carved out time to get a lift in - these inter-hall playoff basketball games won’t win themselves!”

The miracle on...

Looking good: Steds Hockey

... ice. That's what they are calling the recent Steds hockey win. The Steds Hockey squad not only looked great in their new hockey jerseys but also won! Yes, Steds won its first game of the season. Coming off a heart break loss, a loss that happened in the last minute of the game, the Steds squad was hungry for a win. Under the tutelage of team captain, Jacob Smith, Steds skated to its first win against the combined halls of Sorin and Morrissey with a final score of two to one. On this historical and critical win, team member,

Patrick Campbell shared, “Our first, and certainly not last, taste of victory was as sweet as fabled Amazonian Honey as described by Francisco de Orellana. Our win matched the greatest of games like the American win over the USSR in the 1980 Olympic Season, with our season on par for another Miracle on Ice. St. Edwards Hall hockey is a just as lovable team as the USA at Lake Placid, winning the hearts and minds of spectators with our class, speed, and dare I say elegance on the ice. I look forward to another victory and the gold medal game.” 

Kyle Rubin added, “It was a great feeling to pull on the new Steds sweaters and bring back the first win for Steds Hockey in a long time. The boys really pulled together for a great team victory, and we hope to continue to this momentum into the playoffs on Tuesday against Duncan/Fisher/Zahm at 8:30, hopefully with the whole dorm there to support.”

Davis Flusche said, “There’s nothing quite like winning a beautiful game of frozen water hockey with the men of this esteemed hall,”

Brendan Avey added, “I love skating with the boys and I’m glad that the seniors got their first win in over 4 years. Hopefully we can continue our success in the playoffs next week.”

Next, Brendan Moriarty interjected, “To quote the great coach Herb Brooks, “Great moments are born from great opportunity.” Steds Hockey has had many opportunities over my 3 years, and after 3 seasons of leaving everything we had out there on the ice, it was nice to finally get our first win for my senior season.”

Finally, Captain Smith said, “St. Ed’s hockey has always been an uphill battle of constantly moving closer to the mountain top: a win. When this year’s team finally saw the landscape at the top of the mountain, my thoughts remained with all those who helped us on this journey in past years. To them, I say thank you. We finally have arrived and we’re not planning on leaving any time soon.

Saturday Squirrel.

Don't mind me, really.

It's been a tough winter for everyone, including our furry friends. Since coming back to campus in early January, for the majority of the time, temperatures have below freezing. Of course, there is the occasional odd, warm day, but sadly, those days are far and few in-between. Still, we hope. But yet, through this all, campus squirrels have braved it all... and in fine form too. Maybe it's them remembering where they buried their nuts or finding a big berry tree, but whatever it is, they are flourishing. And that was evident by this squirrel spotted in a large shrub on the east side of God Quad by LaFortune. Perched on a branch, this squirrel was watching the student commute while enjoying a tasty nut. On watching the students, this squirrel non-verbaled, "I love people watching."

A most welcomed...

Girl Scout Cookies: Much need and much appreciated

... surprise. Yes, a most welcomed surprise was delivered to Steds this past week. Opening the door after a knock, Fr. Ralph was surprised by a member of Girl Scout troop 364 who was dropping off a carton of gifts for some of the Gentlemen. What were these gifts? Girl Scout cookies of course! From Caramel Delights to Lemonades, from Thin Mints to Peanut Butter Patties, some of the Gentlemen received a little love in the form of delicious cookies that only the Girl Scouts know how to make. How do the Girl Scouts do it? Well, they're not telling... you'll just have to buy the cookies. On the arrival of the carton of cookies, Fr. Ralph said, "Girl Scouts cookies? Somebody loves us!"

A Gentleman...

Bass: It's in the bag!

... doesn't tell everything. It's no surprise Steds is hosting its Mom's Weekend this year (April 8th-10th), but what is a surprise is what's in the gift bags. What has Kyle Bass, Mom's Weekend Commissioner, decided to place in the goodie bags of Steds moms this year? Whatever it is, Bass isn't telling, but it arrived today in several boxes. Is he pleased? Will these gifts be the proverbial piéce de résistance of this cherished weekend? Only time will time. More to come. On the gifts, Bass shared, "After perfecting the design and finalizing the details, we were thrilled to see the Mom's Weekend gifts arrive at St. Ed’s - and I must say, they turned out even better than I could have imagined."

Memories...

Harmeyer and his brother...

... from the Super Bowl. That's what freshman and Bengals fan, Will Harmeyer, has after attending the Super Bowl LVI at SoFi Stadium last Sunday. Like his team the Bengals, who were attending their first Super Bowl, so was Harmeyer, but in the stands. Still yet, there was another first as Harmeyer was sporting his first mullet. That's right. Harmeyer kept his mullet for the game. Now, that's real dedication. While the Super Bowl was a day of pageantry, football, and America, sadly, it was not a day for another first, a Bengals' Super Bowl victory. Despite the loss, young Harmeyer kept his chin up through it all. On the game, Harmeyer shared, "It was a tough loss but still incredibly fun. Between Joe Burrow, the halftime show, and the blind zebras they gave whistles to, it is certainly something I will never forget."

V M Day!

With their mullets, President Lynch and Johnson shook hands...

Victory over Malaria! Yes, today is VM Day at Steds, and how could it not be? The power of Steds mullets could not be rebuffed, and the enemy is vanquished for now. With the nets that will be purchased through donations, the enemy will retreat, and soon, malaria will have no place to hide. While the boys are returning home, our fight is not over, the war will go on. Indeed, the enemy will see our brave boys and their powerful, magnificent mullets again, again, again… until that day when it vanquished once and for all.  But for now, it’s back to the Steds barracks for some R&R and a haircut!

Earlier this evening, President Lynch  received Steds Mullet Commander, Ryan Johnson, in the Sky Lounge giving the order to cease operations and demobilize. And as sign of the Hall's gratitude, Johnson was promoted to the Supreme Commander. On Johnson’s successful campaign, Lynch said, “Never have so few, done so much, so quickly, and so classy too. Take that malaria!”

We THANK those who gave their follicles for the fight, but we also must give thanks to all those from who joined us in this fight, monitoring our progress, buoying our spirits, making donations, all of which made this campaign a RESOUNDING SUCCESS, raising $16,676! Whether or not we donned a mullet, today's victory is something that we can all be proud of and celebrate.

Mullets never...

Gentlemen: Attention...

... looked so good! With the theater of war drawing to a close, our Gentlemen gathered in the Flounge for some rest and relaxation. As they did, it was a sight for all of those at the home front to behold. The power that was exuded with so many mullets concentrated in one location at the same time, well, let's just say sunglasses were needed to take it all in. The mullets, the racing stripes, and smiles of these young men communicated class and camaraderie but most of all the conquering of a despised enemy- malaria. On the war on malaria, President Michael Lynch shared, 

"In the 10th year of our campaign against malaria, St. Edward's Hall once again exceeded our fundraising goal! Thank you to Ryan Johnson for leading these efforts, and thank you to all those who donated to the cause. With your help, we raised thousands of life-saving dollars to help in the fight against malaria. Finally, thank you to the brave Stedsmen who rocked the mullet this year. It was a great success, for the kids!"

One tree only folks: comedic squirrel

As the war against malaria carries on, let's take a brief respite from it. Someone who is always ready to entertain is a squirrel at Notre Dame. Just as we know when they need a hand out, our furry friends know when we need a pick me up. That's what this furry friend in a tree near the Main Gate was trying to do... make a funny. Running around on the ground in circles as if chasing his tail, pausing, and then starting the chase all over again, this squirrel finally assumed his perch in the tree. On his antics, this squirrel non-verbaled, "But did you get that on video?"

A leader...

Buckendorf: A bit shy, but with the help of friends...

... among his peers! This freshman from the Front Range of Colorado made his mark early in the Fall Semester, donning a traffic cone for football games to cheer his quarterback, Jack Coan, onward to victory. But what would this young Gentleman do in the Spring Semester to make his mark? It looks as if the war against malaria has given Jacob Buckendorf the opportunity to rise and shine- to stand out among his peers- once again. Perhaps Buckendorf wanted the attention or a promotion, but whatever the reason was, Buckendorf has gained the admiration and respect of his fellow Stedsmen with his special haircut for Mullets Against Malaria. On Buckendorf's haircut, Steds Mullets Commander, Ryan Johnson said, 

"While all of the Gentlemen of St. Edward's Hall show up for the fight against malaria, some fight harder. This year one of our noble freshmen Jacob Buckendorf (Buck) went all out. Rather than getting a mullet he chose to receive what is colloquially known as a 'skullet.' This is essentially the opposite of a mullet where rather than cutting the sides, you only cut off the top of the hair. While all of the St. Edward's Gentlemen have shown up, Buck has become an exemplar to us all of what it means to fight malaria."
